Selector Lever

Selector Lever Positions
PParkThe transaxle will be locked and the vehicle will be stationary in PARK. The engine will start. The selector lever can only be moved out of the PARK position if the ignition is turned to the ON position and the brake pedal is pressed. In an emergency (battery discharged), the selector lever can be unlocked manually. Refer to BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK OVERRIDE .
RReverseOnly will engage when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling. Vehicle will move in the rearward direction.
NNeutralThe engine can be started - no power transfer to the driving wheels.
DGears 1 to 4 with Overdrive (O/D)Position for normal driving. All 4 gears are shifted electronically. Vehicle will move in the forward direction. When the engine is stopped, this mode of operation is automatically enabled.
DGears 1 to 3 without O/DPosition for normal driving, but without 4th gear. Vehicle will move in the forward direction.
22nd gearThe transaxle stays in 2nd gear.
11st gearThe transaxle stays in 1st gear.

Brake Shift Interlock Override

Scheme 20

Scheme 20: Function
  1. If the brake signal should fail due to a malfunction, manual unlocking is possible.
  2. The cover of the release mechanism must be removed. Using a screwdriver or similar tool, press into the opening until the manual selector lever can be moved out of PARK position.

Scheme 21

Scheme 21: Transmission Control Switch (TCS)

The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is located on the side of the selector lever.

The TCS transmits a signal to the PCM. The signal from the TCS will cancel O/D and downshift the transaxle from 4th gear to 3rd gear when the selector lever is in the DRIVE position.

The signal of the TCS is used for the following functions

  1. As an input signal to the PCM to cancel O/D
  2. To illuminate the O/D indicator light on the Instrument Cluster (IC)

The TCS does not have a substitute signal. If the TCS fails, the 3-4 shift cannot be canceled.

Scheme 22

Scheme 22: O/D Indicator
  1. The O/D indicator is located in the IC and is colored green.
  2. The O/D indicator is actuated by the TCS on the selector lever. It tells the driver that O/D is off.

The O/D indicator also lights to tell the driver that the transaxle control has switched to the emergency operating program or that the transmission fluid temperature is too high.

Scheme 23

Scheme 23: Selector Lever Button
  1. Allows the driver to move the selector lever from the PARK position, the ignition must be turned to the ON position, brake pedal must be pressed and selector lever release button pressed in.
  2. The selector lever button must also be pressed, if the lever is moved from: N and D to 2 and 1. 1, 2, D and N to R and P. R to P.

Brake Shift Interlock Override

Note. If it is necessary to use the override procedure to move the selector lever out of the PARK position, it is possible that a fuse has blown and the brake lights are not operational. Before driving the vehicle, verify that the brake lights are working.

This vehicle is equipped with a brake shift interlock feature that prevents the selector lever from being moved out of PARK when the ignition is in the ON or RUN position unless the brake pedal is pressed.

If the selector lever cannot be moved out of the PARK position when the ignition is in the ON position and the brake pedal is pressed

  1. Apply the parking brake and remove the ignition key.
  2. Remove the access panel.
  3. Using a screwdriver or suitable tool, press the brake shift interlock override mechanism on the selector lever, apply the brake, press the button on the selector lever and move the selector lever into NEUTRAL.
  4. Start the vehicle.
  5. To install, reverse the procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-356737) .
  2. Remove the battery and battery tray. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-356758) .
  3. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL) and outlet pipe assembly. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING»(ref-356770) .
  4. Support the flexible exhaust pipe, using a suitable wrap.
  5. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and detach the exhaust hanger isolators. Discard the gasket.
  6. Disconnect the center exhaust hanger isolator and support the exhaust with wire.
  7. Remove the 8 fasteners from and the exhaust heat shield.
  8. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the retainer on the unibody.
  9. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable bracket and manual control lever. Disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual control lever. Depress the tabs on the selector lever cable and remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable bracket. Position the selector lever cable aside.
  10. Remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE»(ref-356767) .
  11. Remove the selector lever cable from the selector lever. Shift the selector lever to PARK. Unclip the selector lever cable. Unclip the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable bracket.
  12. Remove the heater core housing cover. Unclip the 4 clips. Remove the 2 screws.
  13. Using a suitable tool, cut the carpet in the center under the heater core and evaporator core housing to gain access to the selector lever cable grommet. Begin cutting the carpet where the selector lever cable is exposed and cut the carpet back until the tool no longer fits between the floor and the heater core and evaporator core housing. To cut the carpet further forward, access the carpet with the tool through the LH side of the heater core and evaporator core housing. Cut the carpet far enough forward to be able to position the carpet out from under the heater core and evaporator core housing to access the selector lever cable grommet.
  14. Position the carpet out from under the heater core and evaporator core housing to gain access to the selector lever cable grommet.
