TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The starting system consists of the following

  1. Starter motor
  2. Starter motor relay
  3. Transmission Range (TR) sensor
  4. Battery
  5. Ignition switch
  6. PCM
  7. Start diode

When the starter solenoid is energized, a magnetic field is created in the starter solenoid windings. The iron plunger core is drawn into the starter solenoid coil, and a drive lever and pin connected to the starter drive engages the drive pinion gear to the flexplate ring gear. When the plunger is pulled all the way in, its contact disc closes the circuit between the battery and the motor feed terminals. This sends current to the motor and the drive pinion gear cranks the flexplate to start the engine. When current flows to the starter motor, the starter solenoid pull-in coil is bypassed and the hold-in coil keeps the drive pinion gear engaged with the flexplate.

An overrunning clutch in the starter drive protects the starter motor from excessive speeds during the brief period before the driver releases the ignition switch from the START position as the engine starts.

The starting system uses a TR sensor located on the transaxle. The TR sensor prevents operation of the starter motor unless NEUTRAL or PARK is selected.

The vehicle has One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS), a computer-assisted cranking system. This feature assists in starting the engine. If the ignition key is turned to the START position and released when the engine begins cranking, the engine may continue cranking for up to 10 seconds or until the vehicle starts.

One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS)

Once the ignition is turned to the START position and the vehicle is in NEUTRAL or PARK, the PCM reads starter motor request from the ignition switch and gains control of the starter engagement. The customer is no longer in the loop after the initial crank request. The customer may release the key to the RUN/START position. The PCM will disengage the starter motor based on the following events

  1. The engine is started (rpm threshold)
  2. A set time has been exceeded (calibrated)
  3. The ignition key has been turned to the OFF position

Principles of Operation

Note. This vehicle may be equipped with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) that disables the engine from starting if an unprogrammed PATS key is used or an invalid PCM ID is received. PATS is controlled by the Instrument Cluster (IC). If there is a PATS concern that caused the engine not to start, the anti-theft light flashes rapidly or glows steadily in the IC . Refer to ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) article to diagnose a PATS concern.

The starting system is electronically controlled by the PCM. The PCM receives the following inputs

  1. PATS enable status from the IC , (if equipped with PATS )
  2. Transaxle in PARK or NEUTRAL from the Transmission Range (TR) sensor
  3. Request to start the engine, ignition switch in the START position

When the ignition switch is turned to START, the PCM receives a request to crank and start the engine. If the PCM recognizes the correct input signals and the gear selector is in the NEUTRAL or PARK position, the PCM provides a ground to the starter relay coil. The starter relay contacts close, providing voltage to the starter solenoid, allowing the starter motor to activate.

Inspection and Verification

WARNINGAlways disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Note. Make sure the anti-theft system is functioning correctly before carrying out a logical starting system diagnosis. Address anti-theft system concerns before continuing. Refer to ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) article.

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «ENGINE ACCESSORY DRIVE BELTS»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#accessory-drive-system) article. Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.
  3. Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply. VISUAL INSPECTION Mechanical Electrical Starter motor Starter motor bolts Flexplate Battery Battery cables Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse(s): 7 (20A) 11 (30A) Wiring, terminals or connectors Starter relay Loose or corroded connections
  4. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  5. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM . refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
  7. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition key is in the ON position. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  8. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article. If the network test passes, proceed with module self-test diagnostics.
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «PCM DTC CHART»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system__pcm-dtc-chart) . For all other DTCs, refer to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULE»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) article.
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system__symptom-chart) .

Pinpoint Test A: The Engine Does Not Crank

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Starting System for schematic and connector information.

Normal Operation

The ignition switch is turned to the START position, the PCM receives a request to start the engine. Voltage is supplied through the start diode to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor and the PCM. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, the TR sensor supplies voltage to the starter relay coil. Ground is supplied by the PCM causing the starter relay coil to energize and the starter relay contacts to close. This allows voltage to be supplied from Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 11 (30A) to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is grounded at the starter. Energizing the starter solenoid closes the solenoid contacts allowing voltage directly from the battery to the starter, engaging the starter drive into the ring gear causing the engine to crank and start. The PCM disengages the starter once an engine rpm threshold is reached, a set crank time is exceeded or the ignition is turned OFF.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Battery
  2. Battery cables
  3. Fuse
  4. Ignition switch
  5. Starter motor
  6. Starter relay
  7. Start diode
  8. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  9. PCM
  10. TR sensor
  11. PATS (if equipped)

Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

  1. A1 CHECK THE BATTERY Check the battery condition and state of charge. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing in «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. Is the battery OK? Yes: GO to A2 . No: CHARGE or INSTALL a new battery as necessary. REFER to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. A2 RETRIEVE PCM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM - Self-Test. Were DTCs retrieved from the self-test? Yes: For PCM DTC P1260:00, REFER to «ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM - PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS)»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#anti-theft-system-passive-anti-theft-system-pats) article. All other PCM DTCs, REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) article. No: GO to A3 .
  3. A3 CHECK THE PCM TRANSMISSION RANGE TR SENSOR PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. While observing the TR PID, place the gear selector in PARK and then NEUTRAL. Does the PID match the gear selector position? Yes: GO to A4 . No: REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION - 4F27E»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxletransmission-4f27e) article to diagnose the TR sensor concern.
  4. A4 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY ENABLE (STRT_RLY) PID Monitor the STRT_RLY PID while holding the key in the START position. Does the PID change from DISABLED to ENABLED? Yes: GO to A5 . No: GO to A18 .
  5. A5 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY Swap the starter relay with a known good relay and attempt to crank the engine. Does the engine crank? Yes: INSTALL a new starter relay. TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to A6 .
  6. A6 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR RELAY Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Starter Relay. Measure the voltage between BJB starter motor relay cavity 3, circuit 30-BB12 (RD), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A7 . No: VERIFY BJB fuse 11 (30A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR circuit 30-BB12 (RD) for an open. If not OK, REFER to the «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-395063) article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation.
  7. A7 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR With the transaxle in PARK, connect one end of a fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 3, circuit 30-BB12 (RD) and momentarily connect the other end of the fused jumper wire to BJB starter relay cavity 5, circuit 50-BB12 (GY). Did the starter engage and the engine crank? Yes: GO to A13 . No: GO to A8 .
  8. A8 CHECK THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the battery ground cable connection at the engine. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A9 . No: INSTALL a new negative battery cable. REFER to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  9. A9 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR GROUND Measure the voltage between the positive battery post and the starter motor case. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A10 . No: CLEAN the starter motor mounting flange and MAKE SURE the starter motor is correctly mounted. TEST the system for normal operation.
  10. A10 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER MOTOR Measure the voltage between starter motor C197A-1, circuit 30-BB10 (RD) and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A11 . No: INSTALL a new positive battery cable. REFER to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. A11 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR Connect one end of a fused jumper wire to starter solenoid C197A-1, circuit 30-BB10 (RD) and momentarily connect the other end of the fused jumper wire to starter solenoid C197B-1, circuit 50-BB12 (GY). Did the starter motor engage and the engine crank? Yes: GO to A12 . No: INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
  12. A12 CHECK FOR START INPUT AT THE STARTER Connect: Starter Relay. Disconnect: Starter Solenoid C197B. Measure the voltage between the starter solenoid C197B-1, circuit 50-BB12 (GY) and ground, while holding the key in the START position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: CLEAN the starter solenoid "S" terminal and connector. CHECK the wiring and the starter motor for a loose or intermittent connection. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit 50-BB12 (GY) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  13. A13 CHECK THE START DIODE Disconnect: Start Diode. Check the start diode for an open or shorted condition. Is the start diode OK? Yes: GO to A14 . No: INSTALL a new start diode. TEST the system for normal operation.
  14. A14 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER RELAY Ignition OFF. Connect: Start Diode. Measure the voltage between BJB starter motor relay cavity 1, circuit 31S-BB16 (BK/RD), harness side and ground, while holding the key in the START position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: GO to A17 . No: GO to A15 .
  15. A15 CHECK THE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE TR SENSOR AND START DIODE FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Start Diode. Disconnect: TR C167. Measure the resistance between BJB start diode, circuit 50-BB1 (GY/RD), harness side and TR sensor C167-6, circuit 50-BB15 (GY/OG), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to A16 . No: REPAIR the circuit 50-BB1 (GY/RD) or 50-BB15 (GY/OG). TEST the system for normal operation.
  16. A16 CHECK THE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE TR SENSOR AND STARTER RELAY COIL FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between BJB starter motor relay cavity 1, circuit 31S-BB16 (BK/RD), harness side and TR sensor C167-9, circuit 31S-BB16 (BK/RD), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: VERIFY the selector lever linkage is adjusted correctly. REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transaxletransmission-external-controls) article. If adjustment is OK, INSTALL a new selector lever cable. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR the circuit for an open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  17. A17 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Measure the resistance between the BJB starter relay cavity 2, circuit 31-BB16 (BK), harness side and C175B-7, circuit 31-BB16 (BK), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit 31-BB16 (BK). TEST the system for normal operation.
  18. A18 CHECK THE START CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE AT THE PCM Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C175B. Measure the voltage between PCM C175B-16, circuit 50-BB14 (GY/RD), harness side and ground, while holding the key in the START position. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: GO to A19 .
  19. A19 CHECK THE START MOTOR REQUEST CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Start Diode. Measure the resistance between BJB start diode cell, circuit 50-BB14 (GY/RD), harness side and PCM C175B-16, circuit 50-BB14 (GY/RD), harness side. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: GO to A20 . No: REPAIR the circuit 50-BB14 (GY/RD). TEST the system for normal operation.
  20. A20 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Carry out the Ignition Switch Component Test. Refer to «IGNITION SWITCH»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/accessories-control-systems/#component-testing) for component testing. Did the ignition switch pass the component test? Yes: REPAIR circuit 50-BB16 (GY/BK) for an open. TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-column-switches) article. TEST the system for normal operation.

Pinpoint Test B: One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS) Does Not Operate Correctly

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Starting System for schematic and connector information.

The ignition switch is turned to the START position, the PCM receives a request to start the engine. Voltage is supplied through the start diode to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor and the PCM. With the gear selector in PARK or NEUTRAL, the TR sensor supplies voltage to the starter relay coil. Ground is supplied by the PCM causing the starter relay coil to energize and the starter relay contacts to close. This allows voltage to be supplied from Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 11 (30A) to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is grounded at the starter. Energizing the starter solenoid closes the solenoid contacts allowing voltage directly from the battery to the starter, engaging the starter drive into the ring gear causing the engine to crank and start. When the key is released the TR sensor no longer supplies voltage to the starter relay. The PCM supplies voltage to the starter relay to continue cranking for one touch start operation. The PCM disengages the starter once an engine rpm threshold is reached, a set crank time is exceeded or the ignition is turned OFF.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. PCM

PINPOINT TEST B: OTIS DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

  1. B1 CHECK THE STATUS OF ONE-TOUCH START STATUS (OTS_STAT) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. Monitor the OTS_STAT PID with the ignition switch in the RUN position. Is the One-Touch Integrated Start (OTIS) PID enabled? Yes: GO to B2 . No: ENABLE OTIS . TEST the system for normal operation. If OTIS will not enable, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. B2 CHECK THE STARTER MOTOR CONTROL OUTPUT DETECTED (SMC_MON) PID Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: DataLogger - PCM. Monitor the SMC_MON PID with the ignition switch in the START position. Does the PID change from OFF to ON? Yes: INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/removal-installation/#electronic-engine-control-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: REPAIR circuit 50-BB15 (GY/OG) for an open between the start diode and PCM. TEST the system for normal operation.

Pinpoint Test C: Unusual Starter Noise

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Starter motor
  2. Starter motor mounting
  3. Starter motor engagement
  4. Flexplate ring gear
  1. C1 CHECK THE STARTER MOUNTING Inspect the starter motor mounting bolts for looseness. Is the starter motor mounted correctly? Yes: GO to C2 . No: INSTALL the starter motor correctly. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. C2 CHECK FOR ENGINE NOISE Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "B" and "S" terminals. Engage the starter and verify the noise is due to starter operation. Is the noise due to the starter motor engagement? Yes: GO to C3 . No: REFER to «ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-system-general-information) article to continue the diagnosis.
  3. C3 CHECK FOR UNUSUAL WEAR Remove the starter motor. Refer to «STARTER MOTOR»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system) in this service information. Inspect the flexplate ring gear for damaged or worn teeth. Is the noise due to flexplate ring gear tooth damage? Yes: INSTALL a new flexplate. REFER to «ENGINE MECHANICAL - 2.0L»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/mechanical/#engine-mechanical-20l) article. EXAMINE the starter pinion teeth. If damaged, INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «STARTER MOTOR»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.

Component Tests

WARNINGAlways disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Always make the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter connections at the component terminal rather than at the wiring end connector. Making a connection at the wiring end connector could result in false readings because the meter will not pick up a high resistance between the wiring connector and the component.

Scheme 18: Starter Motor - Feed Circuit Test
  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged. Carry out the Battery Condition Test. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing in «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article article.
  2. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  3. Connect the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter positive lead to the battery positive (+) post. Connect the negative lead to the "M" terminal.
  4. Engage the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage. The voltage reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
  5. If the voltage reading is 0.5 volt or less, go to the «STARTER MOTOR - GROUND CIRCUIT TEST»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/starter/#starting-system__starter-motor-ground-circuit-test) .
  6. If the voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, this is an indication of excessive resistance in the connections, the positive battery cable or in the starter solenoid. Move the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter negative lead to the starter solenoid "B" terminal and repeat the test. If the voltage reading at the "B" terminal is lower than 0.5 volt, the concern is either in the connections at the starter solenoid or in the solenoid contacts.
  7. Remove the cables from solenoid "B" "S" and "M" terminals. Clean the cables and connections and reinstall the cables to the correct terminals. Repeat Steps 3 through 6. If the voltage drop reading is still greater than 0.5 volt when checked at the "M" terminal and less than 0.5 volt when checked at the "B" terminal, the concern is in the solenoid contacts. Install a new starter motor.
  8. If the voltage reading taken at the solenoid "B" terminal is still greater than 0.5 volt after cleaning the cables and the connections at the solenoid, the concern is either in the positive (+) battery cable connection or in the positive battery cable itself. Clean the positive (+) battery cable connection. If this does not solve the problem, install a new positive battery cable. Refer to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article.

Starter Motor - Ground Circuit Test

A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows

  1. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid "S" terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  2. Connect the Fluke 77-IV Digital Multimeter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.
  3. Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
  4. If the voltage is more than 0.5 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery, the body ground connections and the starter ground connections. Retest.
  5. If the voltage is more than 0.5 volt, install a new cable. Refer to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. If the voltage reading is less than 0.5 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor.

Removal and Installation

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/hoistjack/#jacking-lifting) article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article.
  3. Remove the starter solenoid wire nut. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  4. Remove the starter solenoid battery cable nut and the starter motor solenoid wire harness terminal cover. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).
  5. Detach the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) switch wire harness retainer from the starter stud bolt.
  6. Remove the power steering tube bracket nut and position the power steering tube and bracket aside. To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
  7. Remove the upper bolt, the lower stud bolt and the starter motor. To install, first install the upper bolt and lower stud bolt finger-tight. Tighten the upper bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft). Tighten the lower stud bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
