Module Controlled Functions

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is located under the instrument panel (in front of the Central Junction Box (CJB)) on the driver side and controls the following

  1. Interior lighting
  2. Turn lamps
  3. Battery saver function
  4. Delayed accessory relay function
  5. Horn
  6. Heated rear window
  7. Power door locks
  8. Front and rear wipers
  9. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system

Principles of Operation

The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) controls various systems (such as turn lamps, interior lighting, power door locks, wipers and the battery saver feature) by monitoring inputs from switches, sensors and messages sent from other modules on the Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN). Based on the inputs received, the SJB activates outputs. For example, the SJB monitors the door ajar switches. Based on this input, the SJB may provide voltage to the interior lamps.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Electrical Central Junction Box (CJB) fuse 179 (7.5A) Generic Electronic Module (GEM) logic
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM . refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition is ON. The air bag warning indicator prove-out confirms ignition ON (other indicators may not prove ignition ON). If the ignition does not turn on, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-column-switches) article to diagnose no power in RUN. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, The PCM Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article. If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the GEM .
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, Go to «DTC CHARTS»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) .
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, Go to «SYMPTOM CHART»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__symptom-chart) .

SYMPTOM CHART

Normal Operation

  1. DTC B1317 (Battery Voltage High) - a continuous DTC that sets when the GEM detects battery voltage above 16.5 volts.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Charging system concern
  2. GEM

PINPOINT TEST A: DTC B1317

Note. DTC B1317 may be stored in the module memory due to previous battery charging or vehicle jump starting events.

  1. A1 CHECK FOR DTC B1317 OR P0563:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: (All Modules) Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC B1317 or DTC P0563:00 (PCM) set in more than one module? Yes: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#charging-system) article to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: Go to A2 .
  2. A2 CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE Turn off all interior/exterior lights and accessories. Start and run the engine at approximately 2,000 rpm for 3 minutes while monitoring the battery voltage. Does the battery voltage rise to 16.5 volts or higher? Yes: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#charging-system) article to diagnose an overcharging condition. No: Go to A3 .
  3. A3 RECHECK FOR DTC B1317 Turn the engine off. Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: GEM Self-Test. Clear the continuous memory DTCs. Carry out the GEM self-test. Is DTC B1317 present? Yes: INSTALL a new GEM . REFER to «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set previously during battery charging or while jump starting the vehicle.

Pinpoint Test B: DTC B1318

Refer to SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article, Power Distribution for schematic and connector information.

  1. DTC B1318 (Battery Voltage Low) - a continuous memory DTC that sets when the GEM detects battery voltage below 8.5 volts.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Wiring, terminals or connectors
  2. High circuit resistance
  3. GEM

Note. Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

Note. Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES article.

  1. B1 RECHECK THE GEM DTCs Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: GEM Self-Test. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the GEM self-test. Is DTC B1318 still present? Yes: Go to B2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set previously during battery charging or while jump starting the vehicle.
  2. B2 CHECK FOR CHARGING SYSTEM DTCs IN THE PCM Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PCM Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from the PCM. Is DTC P0620:00, P0625:00, P0626:00 or P065B:00 set in the PCM? Yes: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#charging-system) article. No: Go to B3 .
  3. B3 CHECK THE BATTERY CONDITION AND STATE OF CHARGE Ignition OFF. Check the battery condition and verify the battery is fully charged. Refer to «BATTERY, BATTERY MOUNTING SYSTEM & BATTERY CABLES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#battery-battery-mounting-system-battery-cables) article. Is the battery OK and fully charged? Yes: Go to B4 . No: REFER to «CHARGING SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/charging-system/#charging-system) article.
  4. B4 CHECK THE GEM VOLTAGE SUPPLY Measure and record the voltage at the battery. Disconnect: GEM C201A. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the GEM C201A-10, circuit 15-DK20 (GN/OG), harness side and ground. Is the voltage within 0.2 volt of the recorded battery voltage? Yes: Go to B5 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CLEAR the DTC. REPEAT the self-test.
  5. B5 CHECK THE GEM GROUND CIRCUIT Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable. Disconnect: GEM C201D. Measure the resistance between the GEM C201D-3, circuit 31-DK20 (BK), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes: CONNECT the negative battery cable. Go to B6 . No: REPAIR the circuit for high resistance. CONNECT the negative battery cable. TEST the system for normal operation.
  6. B6 CHECK FOR CORRECT GEM OPERATION Disconnect all the GEM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the GEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes: INSTALL a new GEM . REFER to «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
  1. DTC U0146 (Lost Communication With Gateway (GTWY)) - sets when the GEM loses communication with the IC for 5 seconds or longer.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. IC
  3. GEM

PINPOINT TEST C: DTC U0146

  1. C1 VERIFY CUSTOMER CONCERN Ignition ON. Verify that there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes: Go to C2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or intermittent fault condition.
  2. C2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the IC pass the network test? Yes: Go to C3 . No: REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, The IC Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
  3. C3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST Check for recorded GEM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded? Yes: For DTC B1317, Go to «PINPOINT TEST A»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-a-dtc-b1317) . For DTC B1318, Go to «PINPOINT TEST B»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-b-dtc-b1318) . No: Go to C4 .
  4. C4 RECHECK THE GEM DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the GEM self-test. Is DTC U0146 still present? Yes: INSTALL a new IC . REFER to «INSTRUMENTATION & WARNING CHIMES»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrumentation-warning-chimes) article. TEST the system for normal operation. REPEAT the GEM self-test. If DTC U0146 is still present, INSTALL a new GEM . REFER to «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation. No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or intermittent fault condition.
  1. DTC U0151 (Lost Communication With Restraints Control Module) - sets when the GEM loses communication with the RCM for longer than 5 seconds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. GEM
  3. RCM

PINPOINT TEST D: DTC U0151

  1. D1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Ignition ON. Verify that there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes: Go to D2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  2. D2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the RCM pass the network test? Yes: Go to D3 . No: REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, The RCM Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
  3. D3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST Check for recorded GEM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded? Yes: For DTC B1317, Go to «PINPOINT TEST A»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-a-dtc-b1317) . For DTC B1318, Go to «PINPOINT TEST B»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-b-dtc-b1318) . No: Go to D4 .
  4. D4 RECHECK THE GEM DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the GEM self-test. Is DTC U0151 still present? Yes: Go to D5 . No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  5. D5 CHECK FOR DTC U0151 SET IN OTHER MODULES Clear all DTCs. Ignition OFF. Ignition ON. Wait 10 seconds. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC U0151 set in any other module? Yes: INSTALL a new RCM . REFER to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/airbag/#supplemental-restraint-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new GEM . REFER to «GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE (GEM)»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module) in this service information. TEST the system for normal operation.

Pinpoint Test E: DTC U0155

  1. DTC U0155 (Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IC) Control Module) - sets when the GEM loses communication with the Instrument Cluster (IC) for longer than 5 seconds.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Module communication
  2. GEM
  3. IC
  1. E1 VERIFY THE CUSTOMER CONCERN Ignition ON. Verify that there is an observable symptom present. Is an observable symptom present? Yes: Go to E2 . No: The system is operating normally at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  2. E2 CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test. Carry out the network test. Does the IC pass the network test? Yes: Go to E3 . No: REFER to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network) article, The IC Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool.
  3. E3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE SELF-TEST Check for recorded GEM DTCs from the self-test. Is DTC B1317 or DTC B1318 recorded? Yes: For DTC B1317, Go to «PINPOINT TEST A»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-a-dtc-b1317) . For DTC B1318, Go to «PINPOINT TEST B»(/ford/transit-connect/i-2009-2013/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-module__pinpoint-test-b-dtc-b1318) . No: Go to E4 .
  4. E4 RECHECK THE GEM DTCs NOTE: If new modules were installed prior to the DTC being set, the module configuration may be incorrectly set during Programmable Module Installation (PMI) or the PMI may not have been carried out. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the GEM self-test. Is DTC U0155 still present? Yes: Go to E5 . No: The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  5. E5 CHECK FOR DTC U0155 OR U0155:00 SET IN OTHER MODULES Clear all DTCs. Ignition OFF. Ignition ON. Wait 10 seconds. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Self-Test. Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs from all modules. Is DTC U0155 or U0155:00 set in any other module? Yes: INSTALL a new IC . Removal

Note. A new Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is delivered in a "manufacturing mode" with a pre-set DTC. A successful configuration of the GEM , then a successful self-test including the clearing of all DTCs is required in order to clear the manufacturing mode DTC. The manufacturing mode DTC is B2477 (Module Configuration Failure)
