TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE

Module Controlled Functions

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The vehicle is equipped with a SJB and a driver seat module (DSM).

Smart Junction Box (SJB)

Note. The time out for the battery saver relay and the accessory delay relay (both are controlled by the SJB) is 1 minute if the vehicle has less than 80 km (50 miles). Once the vehicle passes the approximate mileage threshold of 80 km (50 miles), the time out for both relays will be the normal 10 minute time out, as described by the Owner's Literature. For the battery saver relay, Refer to INTERIOR LIGHTING article. For the accessory delay relay, refer to GLASS, FRAMES AND MECHANISMS article.

The SJB is a combination of a multifunction control module and a central junction box (CJB). The following systems are controlled by the SJB

  1. Accessory delay relay
  2. Battery saver relay
  3. Exterior lighting
  4. Interior lighting
  5. Heated rear window
  6. Horn
  7. Perimeter anti-theft
  8. Power door locks (including smart locks, autolocking and liftgate/luggage compartment lid release)
  9. Remote keyless entry (RKE)/keyless entry keypad
  10. Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)

Driver Seat Module (DSM)

The DSM controls the user selected comfort functions. These functions are the memory seat, memory mirrors and memory pedals. Up to 2 personal settings can be programmed into the DSM memory and when selected, the DSM returns the user adjustable features to the programmed positions. For additional information on programming the memory feature, refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS article.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Table

Note. Most powertrain (P-code) DTCs are diagnosed in the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED). If the P-code retrieved is not listed below, refer to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines article to continue diagnostics.

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

Scheme 76: Smart Junction Box (SJB)

Principles of Operation

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The SJB is a multifunction module that controls many of the vehicle systems. Most of the SJB functions utilize hardwired inputs and/or outputs. The SJB controls the following hardwired functions, using the corresponding inputs and outputs

FunctionInput(s)Output(s)

In addition, the SJB is involved in other vehicle systems through communication over the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN). For a detailed list of SJB network inputs and outputs, refer to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article, Principles of Operation .

Some SJB parameters are programmable. Two types of programmable parameters are available: vehicle configuration and customer preference. Refer to MODULE CONFIGURATION article.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage. VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Electrical Battery junction box (BJB) fuse(s): 1 (80A) 2 (80A) 33 (20A) Smart junction box (SJB) fuse 5 (10A) Wiring, terminals or connectors SJB
  3. If an obvious cause of an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
  5. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
  6. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article to diagnose no response from the PCM.
  7. Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article. If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
  8. Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the SJB.
  9. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to DTC Tables. For all other DTCs, refer to «Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Chart»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system__diagnostic-trouble-code-dtc-table) .
  10. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to «Symptom Chart»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system) .

Normal Operation

When a repetitive fault causing a circuit overload is detected on certain output circuits, the SJB disables the circuit by removing voltage, or ground, to the affected circuit. The circuit remains disabled until the fault is corrected and the DTCs are cleared, and then the self-test is repeated. When the on-demand self-test has been run after all faults have been corrected, any DTCs related to the fault are cleared.

  1. DTC B106E sets when the SJB has disabled a circuit due to a repetitive fault causing a circuit overload. For a complete list of corresponding DTCs, refer to «Principles of Operation»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system__principles-of-operation) .
  2. DTC B106F (Module Disabled Due to External Fault) - sets when one or more output functions are permanently disabled due to a repetitive circuit overload fault. DTC B106F will be set with DTC B106E. When DTC B106F is present, the SJB must be replaced after the fault condition has been corrected.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Output circuit short to ground or voltage
  2. SJB

PINPOINT TEST A: DTC B106E - SOLID STATE DRIVER DISABLED DUE TO SHORT CIRCUIT

CAUTIONIf DTC B106F is present and the SJB is to be replaced, the fault condition must be corrected first. Failure to correct the fault condition first may cause damage to the new SJB, resulting in a repeat repair.

Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The driver seat module (DSM) allows the driver to program a personalized seat position that can be recalled using the memory switch or a remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter (part of the integrated keyhead transmitter [IKT] key). In addition to the position of the driver seat, the DSM also controls the position of the exterior mirrors and the adjustable pedals. Refer to SEATING article.

The DSM is part of the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN), over which it receives the selected transmission gear message. All other functions of the DSM are hardwired.

When a repetitive fault causing a circuit overload is detected on certain output circuits, the driver seat module (DSM) disables the circuit by removing voltage, or ground, to the affected circuit. The circuit remains disabled until the fault is corrected and an on-demand self-test is run. When the on-demand self-test has been run after all faults have been corrected, any DTCs related to the fault are cleared.

  1. DTC B106E sets when the DSM has disabled a circuit due to a repetitive fault causing a circuit overload.
When DTC B106F is present, the DSM must be replaced after the fault condition has been corrected.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following

  1. Output circuit short to ground or voltage
  2. DSM

PINPOINT TEST B: DTC B106E - SOLID STATE DRIVER DISABLED DUE TO SHORT CIRCUIT

CAUTIONIf DTC B106F is present and the DSM is to be replaced, the fault condition must be corrected first. Failure to correct the fault condition first may cause damage to the new DSM, resulting in a repeat repair.
  1. B1 REVIEW THE DTCs Review the DTCs from the DSM self-test. Is only DTC B106F present? YES : INSTALL a new DSM. REFER to «Driver Seat Module (DSM)»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system) . TEST the system for normal operation. REMOVAL

CAUTIONIf the smart junction box (SJB) is dropped, damage to the internal components may occur. A new SJB must be installed.
CAUTIONElectronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

Note. Prior to the replacement of the module, it is necessary to upload the module configuration information to the scan tool. This information must be downloaded into the new module after installation. For additional information, refer to MODULE CONFIGURATION article. In the event that As-Built data is required (SJB will not communicate), all remote keyless entry (RKE) devices must be programmed to the new SJB. A minimum of 2 devices are necessary to complete the configuration and turn off the flashing interior lights.

Note. The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) functionality is integral to the SJB.

Note. The steps included in the SJB removal and installation procedure are critical to restoring the vehicle security and tire pressure monitoring systems to normal operation. A new SJB is delivered in a manufacturing mode with 7 pre-set DTCs related to the TPMS. To clear the DTCs, successful configuration of the SJB must occur, followed by successful TPMS sensor training, and a successful self-test, including clearing of the DTCs. The DTCs are as follows: B106D (Tire Pressure Monitor System [TPMS] Initiators Not Configured) B2477 (Module Configuration Failure) B2868 (Left Front Tire Pressure Sensor Fault) B2869 (Right Front Tire Pressure Sensor Fault) B2870 (Right Rear Tire Pressure Sensor Fault) B2871 (Left Rear Tire Pressure Sensor Fault) C2780 (ECU in Manufacturer Sub-State)
