REMOVAL

  1. Remove the front seats. For additional information, refer to «SEATING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/seats/#seat-system) article.
  2. Remove the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.
  3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.
  4. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
  5. Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) article.
  6. Remove the 2 nuts and the PCM. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  7. Remove the 3 nuts and the PCM bracket.
  8. Remove the vacuum hose clip from the cowl.
  9. Remove the strut tower cross brace. Remove the 2 LH and 2 RH strut upper mount nuts.
  10. Remove the RH instrument panel upper cowl bolt.
  11. Remove the 2 LH instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
  12. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose from the upper intake manifold.
  13. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold. Remove the TXV manifold bolt. Discard the O-rings seals.
  14. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  15. Remove the RH and LH front door weatherstrips.
  16. Position the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels aside. Pull the front of the scuff plate trim panels upward to release the retaining clips.
  17. Remove the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels. Pull the panel rearward to release it from the clips.
  18. Remove the 2 pushpin retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
  19. Remove the driver footrest pad. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers.
  20. Remove the LH and RH front carpet sections. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers.
  21. Disconnect the RH main wiring harness electrical connector and radio antenna connector.
  22. If equipped, remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the rear footwell duct.
  23. Remove the 2 bolts and the ground wires from the floor pan tunnel.
  24. Remove the RH and LH instrument panel side finish panels.
  25. Remove the RH and LH A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
  26. Remove the 3 bolts and the steering column opening trim panel.
  27. Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws.
  28. Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  29. Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  30. Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Remove the ignition key.
  31. Detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
  32. Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
  33. Disconnect the 2 smart junction box (SJB) electrical connectors.
  34. Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer from the SJB.
  35. If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
  36. Disconnect the restraints control module (RCM) small electrical connector.
  37. Disconnect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
  38. Remove the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
  39. Remove the 6 instrument panel side bolts.
  40. Remove the instrument panel. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the right door.

INSTALLATION

  1. Install the instrument panel.
  2. Install, but do not tighten, the 6 instrument panel side bolts.
  3. Install, but do not tighten, the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
  4. Install, but do not tighten, the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
  5. Tighten the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).
  6. Tighten the 4 instrument panel center support bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  7. Tighten the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  8. Connect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
  9. Connect the small RCM electrical connector.
  10. If equipped, connect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
  11. Connect the 2 SJB electrical connectors.
  12. Install the wire harness pin-type retainer onto the SJB.
  13. Connect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
  14. Install the upper steering column shaft to the steering column.
  15. Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  16. Install a new steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  17. Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  18. Install the hood release handle and tighten the 2 screws.
  19. Install the steering column opening trim panel and the 3 bolts.
  20. Install the RH and LH A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
  21. Install the RH and LH instrument panel side finish panels.
  22. Install the ground wires and the 2 bolts to the floor pan tunnel.
  23. If equipped, install the rear footwell duct and the 2 pin-type retainers.
  24. Connect the RH main wiring harness electrical connector and the radio antenna connector.
  25. Install the LH and RH front carpet sections. Install the 2 pin-type retainers.
  26. Install the driver footrest pad. Install the 2 pin-type retainers.
  27. Install the RH lower instrument panel insulator and the 2 pushpin retainers.
  28. Install the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels.
  29. Install the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels.
  30. Install the RH and LH front door weatherstrips.
  31. Connect the heater hoses.
  32. Install the TXV manifold and the TXV manifold bolt. Install new O-rings seals. Tighten to 8 N.m (71 lb-in).
  33. Connect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose to the upper intake manifold.
  34. Install the strut tower cross brace. Install the LH and RH strut upper mount nuts Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  35. Install the vacuum hose clip onto the cowl.
  36. Install the PCM bracket and the 3 nuts.
  37. Install the PCM and the 2 nuts. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  38. Install the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) article.
  39. Charge the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
  40. Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.
  41. Install the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.
  42. Install the front seats. For additional information, refer to «SEATING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/seats/#seat-system) article.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

All vehicles

  1. Remove the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.
  2. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/steering-column/#steering-column) article.
  3. Remove the steering column multifunction switch. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-column-switches) article.
  4. Remove the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC), MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#information-center) article.
  5. Position aside the RH and LH door opening weatherstrips.
  6. Position aside the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels.
  7. Remove the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels.
  8. Remove the 2 pushpin retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
  9. Remove the 2 center instrument panel finish panel screws.
  10. Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  11. Remove the 2 audio unit screws.
  12. Remove the audio unit. Disconnect the audio unit electrical connectors and the antenna cable.
  13. Detach the instrument panel side panels.
  14. Remove the A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
  15. Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws and position the handle aside.
  16. Remove the headlamp switch. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
  17. Remove the glove compartment. Disengage the glove compartment dampener from the glove compartment. Remove the 3 glove compartment screws. Remove the glove compartment.
  18. Remove the passenger side air bag. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) article.
  19. Remove the passenger assist handle. Remove the 2 LH assist handle screws. Remove the 1 RH assist handle screw. To release the assist handle, pull firmly on the RH side of assist handle. Remove the passenger assist handle.
  20. Remove the cross-vehicle panel. Disconnect the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator electrical connector.
  21. Disconnect the passenger air bag electrical connectors.
  22. Remove the 2 passenger side air bag-to-cross beam bolts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  23. If equipped, position aside the global positioning system (GPS) antenna. Release the 2 clips and remove the GPS antenna from the instrument panel upper section.
  24. Remove the wiring harness pin-type retainer, located in the audio unit opening, from the center air duct.
  25. If equipped, remove the in-vehicle temperature sensor from the instrument panel upper section.
  26. Remove the 11 instrument panel upper section screws. Remove 1 screw from each side at the upper portion of the panel. Remove the 5 screws located in the steering column cover opening. Remove the 2 screws located in the instrument cluster opening. Remove the 2 screws located in the glove compartment opening.
  27. If equipped, remove the light sensor from the instrument panel upper section. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  28. Remove the instrument panel upper section. When installing, verify that the light sensor connector is routed correctly through the instrument panel upper section.
  29. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «Instrument Panel Upper Section»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .
  2. Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
  3. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.

  5. Remove the 2 nuts and the PCM. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  6. Remove the 3 nuts and the PCM bracket.
  7. Remove the strut tower cross brace. Remove the 2 LH and 2 RH strut upper mount nuts.
  8. Remove the RH instrument panel upper cowl bolt.
  9. Remove the 2 LH instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
  10. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose from the upper intake manifold.
  11. Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold. Remove the TXV manifold bolt. Discard the O-ring seals.
  12. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  13. Remove the RH and LH front door weatherstrips.
  14. Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  15. Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  16. Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Remove the ignition key.
  17. Detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
  18. Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
  19. Disconnect the 2 smart junction box (SJB) electrical connectors.
  20. Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer from the SJB.
  21. If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
  22. Disconnect the restraints control module (RCM) small electrical connector.
  23. Disconnect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
  24. Remove the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
  25. Remove the in-vehicle crossbeam. Remove the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Transfer parts as needed.
  1. Position the in-vehicle crossbeam into the vehicle and install, but do not tighten, the following: Six instrument panel side bolts. Four instrument panel center support bolts. Three instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
  2. Tighten the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).
  3. Tighten the 4 instrument panel center support bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  4. Tighten the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  5. Connect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
  6. Connect the small RCM electrical connector.
  7. If equipped, connect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
  8. Connect the 2 SJB electrical connectors.
  9. Install the wire harness pin-type retainer onto the SJB.
  10. Connect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
  11. Install the upper steering column shaft to the steering column.
  12. Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
  13. Install a new steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
  14. Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  15. Connect the heater hoses.
  16. Install the TXV manifold and the TXV manifold bolt. Install new O-ring seals. Tighten to 8 N.m (71 lb-in).
  17. Connect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose to the upper intake manifold.
  18. Install the strut tower cross brace. Install the LH and RH strut upper mount nuts Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  19. Install the PCM bracket and the 3 nuts.
  20. Install the PCM and the 2 nuts. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  21. Install the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) article.
  22. Charge the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
  23. Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.
  24. Install the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «Instrument Panel Upper Section»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .
  1. Remove the selector lever trim ring.
  2. Remove the floor console finish panel.
  3. Remove the 2 center instrument panel finish panel screws.
  4. Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Remove the selector lever trim ring.
  2. Remove the floor console finish panel.
  3. Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Adjust the steering column to the full tilt-down position.
  2. Remove the 2 instrument cluster finish panel screws.
  3. Release the locking tabs on the steering column upper shroud located behind the steering wheel.
  4. Remove the instrument cluster finish panel and the steering column upper shroud as an assembly.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Power Point

Special Tools Illustration Tool Name Tool Number Remover, Power Point Socket 501-039 or equivalent

Note. Power point cover may differ depending on location.

  1. Open the power point cover.
  2. Install the Power Point Socket Remover in one of the power point socket slots.
  3. Position the Power Point Socket Remover so that it engages in the adjacent slot.
  4. Using the Power Point Socket Remover, pull the power point socket out of the retainer.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  1. Connect the electrical connector.
  2. Slide the power point socket into the retainer.

  1. Remove the selector lever trim ring.
  2. Remove the floor console finish panel.
  3. Remove the 2 floor console-to-instrument panel screws. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  4. Remove the floor console LH and RH trim panels. To install, apply 110 Nm (81 lb-ft) of force to the Dylock pad area in the front of the panel.
  5. Remove the 2 floor console front bolts.
  6. Position the front seats forward.
  7. Remove the 2 floor console rear bolts.
  8. Position the front seats rearward.
  9. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
  10. Remove the floor console.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. Fold and tilt the second row seats forward.
  2. Remove the 4 rear floor console bolts. To install, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
  3. Remove the rear floor console.
