REMOVAL
- Remove the front seats. For additional information, refer to «SEATING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/seats/#seat-system) article.
- Remove the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.
- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.
- Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
- Remove the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) article.
- Remove the 2 nuts and the PCM. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
- Remove the 3 nuts and the PCM bracket.
- Remove the vacuum hose clip from the cowl.
- Remove the strut tower cross brace. Remove the 2 LH and 2 RH strut upper mount nuts.
- Remove the RH instrument panel upper cowl bolt.
- Remove the 2 LH instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose from the upper intake manifold.
- Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold. Remove the TXV manifold bolt. Discard the O-rings seals.
- Disconnect the heater hoses.
- Remove the RH and LH front door weatherstrips.
- Position the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels aside. Pull the front of the scuff plate trim panels upward to release the retaining clips.
- Remove the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels. Pull the panel rearward to release it from the clips.
- Remove the 2 pushpin retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
- Remove the driver footrest pad. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Remove the LH and RH front carpet sections. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Disconnect the RH main wiring harness electrical connector and radio antenna connector.
- If equipped, remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the rear footwell duct.
- Remove the 2 bolts and the ground wires from the floor pan tunnel.
- Remove the RH and LH instrument panel side finish panels.
- Remove the RH and LH A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the steering column opening trim panel.
- Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws.
- Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Remove the ignition key.
- Detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 smart junction box (SJB) electrical connectors.
- Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer from the SJB.
- If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
- Disconnect the restraints control module (RCM) small electrical connector.
- Disconnect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
- Remove the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
- Remove the 6 instrument panel side bolts.
- Remove the instrument panel. Rotate the instrument panel face down and remove through the right door.
INSTALLATION
- Install the instrument panel.
- Install, but do not tighten, the 6 instrument panel side bolts.
- Install, but do not tighten, the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
- Install, but do not tighten, the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
- Tighten the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).
- Tighten the 4 instrument panel center support bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Tighten the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Connect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
- Connect the small RCM electrical connector.
- If equipped, connect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
- Connect the 2 SJB electrical connectors.
- Install the wire harness pin-type retainer onto the SJB.
- Connect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
- Install the upper steering column shaft to the steering column.
- Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Install a new steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
- Install the hood release handle and tighten the 2 screws.
- Install the steering column opening trim panel and the 3 bolts.
- Install the RH and LH A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
- Install the RH and LH instrument panel side finish panels.
- Install the ground wires and the 2 bolts to the floor pan tunnel.
- If equipped, install the rear footwell duct and the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Connect the RH main wiring harness electrical connector and the radio antenna connector.
- Install the LH and RH front carpet sections. Install the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Install the driver footrest pad. Install the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Install the RH lower instrument panel insulator and the 2 pushpin retainers.
- Install the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels.
- Install the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels.
- Install the RH and LH front door weatherstrips.
- Connect the heater hoses.
- Install the TXV manifold and the TXV manifold bolt. Install new O-rings seals. Tighten to 8 N.m (71 lb-in).
- Connect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose to the upper intake manifold.
- Install the strut tower cross brace. Install the LH and RH strut upper mount nuts Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
- Install the vacuum hose clip onto the cowl.
- Install the PCM bracket and the 3 nuts.
- Install the PCM and the 2 nuts. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
- Install the wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft assembly. For additional information, refer to «WIPERS AND WASHERS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) article.
- Charge the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
- Fill the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.
- Install the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
All vehicles
- Remove the selector lever. For additional information, refer to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION EXTERNAL CONTROLS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-external-controls) article.
- Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/steering-column/#steering-column) article.
- Remove the steering column multifunction switch. For additional information, refer to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering-column-switches) article.
- Remove the instrument cluster. For additional information, refer to «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC), MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#information-center) article.
- Position aside the RH and LH door opening weatherstrips.
- Position aside the RH and LH front scuff plate trim panels.
- Remove the RH and LH lower cowl trim panels.
- Remove the 2 pushpin retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
- Remove the 2 center instrument panel finish panel screws.
- Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Remove the 2 audio unit screws.
- Remove the audio unit. Disconnect the audio unit electrical connectors and the antenna cable.
- Detach the instrument panel side panels.
- Remove the A-pillar trim panels. For additional information, refer to «INTERIOR TRIM AND ORNAMENTATION»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-and-ornamentation) article.
- Position the hood release handle aside. Remove the 2 screws and position the handle aside.
- Remove the headlamp switch. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
- Remove the glove compartment. Disengage the glove compartment dampener from the glove compartment. Remove the 3 glove compartment screws. Remove the glove compartment.
- Remove the passenger side air bag. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/airbag/#supplemental-inflatable-restraint-system) article.
- Remove the passenger assist handle. Remove the 2 LH assist handle screws. Remove the 1 RH assist handle screw. To release the assist handle, pull firmly on the RH side of assist handle. Remove the passenger assist handle.
- Remove the cross-vehicle panel. Disconnect the passenger air bag deactivation (PAD) indicator electrical connector.
- Disconnect the passenger air bag electrical connectors.
- Remove the 2 passenger side air bag-to-cross beam bolts. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- If equipped, position aside the global positioning system (GPS) antenna. Release the 2 clips and remove the GPS antenna from the instrument panel upper section.
- Remove the wiring harness pin-type retainer, located in the audio unit opening, from the center air duct.
- If equipped, remove the in-vehicle temperature sensor from the instrument panel upper section.
- Remove the 11 instrument panel upper section screws. Remove 1 screw from each side at the upper portion of the panel. Remove the 5 screws located in the steering column cover opening. Remove the 2 screws located in the instrument cluster opening. Remove the 2 screws located in the glove compartment opening.
- If equipped, remove the light sensor from the instrument panel upper section. Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Remove the instrument panel upper section. When installing, verify that the light sensor connector is routed correctly through the instrument panel upper section.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Remove the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «Instrument Panel Upper Section»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .
- Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to «CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION AND DIAGNOSTICS»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/manual-hvac-system/#hvac-control-system-general-information-and-diagnostics) article.
- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#engine-cooling-system) article.

- Remove the 2 nuts and the PCM. Disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
- Remove the 3 nuts and the PCM bracket.

- Remove the RH instrument panel upper cowl bolt.
- Remove the 2 LH instrument panel upper cowl bolts.

- Remove the thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) manifold. Remove the TXV manifold bolt. Discard the O-ring seals.
- Disconnect the heater hoses.

- Remove and discard the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. Remove the ignition key.
- Detach the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
- Disconnect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 smart junction box (SJB) electrical connectors.
- Remove the wire harness pin-type retainer from the SJB.
- If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
- Disconnect the restraints control module (RCM) small electrical connector.
- Disconnect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
- Remove the 4 instrument panel center support bolts.
- Remove the in-vehicle crossbeam. Remove the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Transfer parts as needed.
- Position the in-vehicle crossbeam into the vehicle and install, but do not tighten, the following: Six instrument panel side bolts. Four instrument panel center support bolts. Three instrument panel upper cowl bolts.
- Tighten the 6 instrument panel side bolts. Tighten to 40 N.m (30 lb-ft).
- Tighten the 4 instrument panel center support bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Tighten the 3 instrument panel upper cowl bolts. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Connect the stability control sensor cluster electrical connector.
- Connect the small RCM electrical connector.
- If equipped, connect the electrical connector located on the steering column opening bracket.
- Connect the 2 SJB electrical connectors.
- Install the wire harness pin-type retainer onto the SJB.
- Connect the LH side main wiring harness electrical connector.
- Install the upper steering column shaft to the steering column.
- Rotate the steering wheel to gain access to the steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.
- Install a new steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt. Tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb-ft).
- Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
- Connect the heater hoses.
- Install the TXV manifold and the TXV manifold bolt. Install new O-ring seals. Tighten to 8 N.m (71 lb-in).
- Connect the vacuum hose and the evaporator purge solenoid hose to the upper intake manifold.
- Install the strut tower cross brace. Install the LH and RH strut upper mount nuts Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
- Install the PCM bracket and the 3 nuts.
- Install the PCM and the 2 nuts. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.

- Install the instrument panel upper section. For additional information, refer to «Instrument Panel Upper Section»(/ford/taurus-x/i-2007-2009/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-panel-and-console) .
- Remove the selector lever trim ring.
- Remove the floor console finish panel.
- Remove the 2 center instrument panel finish panel screws.
- Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Remove the selector lever trim ring.
- Remove the floor console finish panel.
- Remove the center instrument panel finish panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Adjust the steering column to the full tilt-down position.
- Remove the 2 instrument cluster finish panel screws.
- Release the locking tabs on the steering column upper shroud located behind the steering wheel.
- Remove the instrument cluster finish panel and the steering column upper shroud as an assembly.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
Power Point
Special Tools Illustration Tool Name Tool Number Remover, Power Point Socket 501-039 or equivalent
Note. Power point cover may differ depending on location.
- Open the power point cover.
- Install the Power Point Socket Remover in one of the power point socket slots.
- Position the Power Point Socket Remover so that it engages in the adjacent slot.
- Using the Power Point Socket Remover, pull the power point socket out of the retainer.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Connect the electrical connector.
- Slide the power point socket into the retainer.

- Remove the selector lever trim ring.
- Remove the floor console finish panel.
- Remove the 2 floor console-to-instrument panel screws. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
- Remove the floor console LH and RH trim panels. To install, apply 110 Nm (81 lb-ft) of force to the Dylock pad area in the front of the panel.
- Remove the 2 floor console front bolts.
- Position the front seats forward.
- Remove the 2 floor console rear bolts.
- Position the front seats rearward.
- Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors.
- Remove the floor console.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
