Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK unless the brake pedal (2455) is depressed. The shift interlock system consists of a shift lock actuator (3Z719) mounted at the base of the steering column tube (3514). If the ignition switch (11572) is in the RUN position, the shift lock actuator is continually on unless the brake pedal is depressed.
Refer to TRANSMISSION and SHIFT INTERLOCKS for schematic and connector information.
Transmission Control Switch (TCS)
The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is a momentary contact switch that is located on the transmission range selector lever. The Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL) is located in the instrument cluster. Pushing the TCS will either disengage or engage the overdrive function of the transmission. When overdrive is disengaged, the TCIL will illuminate the word OFF. Each time the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position, the transmission will automatically provide overdrive operation regardless of TCS position the last time the vehicle was running.
Refer to TRANSMISSION and SHIFT INTERLOCKS for schematic and connector information.

- Verify the customer concern by operating the transmission external control.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage; refer to the following chart
- If the concern is not visually evident, determine the symptom. GO to SYMPTOM CHART .

- Place the gearshift lever (7210) in the p position and hang a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the shift control selector lever. Move the gearshift lever to the first gear position, then move back two detents to the P position. Hang the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever (7A256).
- Pull out the transmission shift cable adjustment lock on the shift cable body.
- Place the manual control lever in the P position. Rotate the manual control lever fully counterclockwise. Rotate the manual control lever clockwise to the P position (2 detents).
- Connect the transmission shift cable to the manual control lever.
- Push in the transmission shift cable adjustment lock on the shift cable body.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
- Verify that the vehicle will start only in P or N and that backup lamps illuminate in R. If not, repeat steps 1 through 7 and perform a digital transmission range sensor alignment; refer to «OVERHAUL - 5R44E & 5R55E - RANGER»(ref-194505) .

- Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover (04459); refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL & CONSOLE»(ref-205012) .
- Place the gearshift lever in the P position. Rotate the gearshift lever clock wise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise (P position).
- Hang the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight on the gearshift lever.
- Center the pointer in the middle of the P position. Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.
- Remove the 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight.
- Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent and compare with the transmission settings. Readjust if necessary.
- Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover; refer to «INSTRUMENT PANEL & CONSOLE»(ref-205012) .

- Remove the steering column assembly; refer to «STEERING COLUMN»(ref-204973) .
- Remove the insert plate and the shift lock actuator (3Z719). Remove the bolts. Remove the insert plate and the shift lock actuator.
- Remove the insert plate from the shift lock actuator. Remove and discard the shift lock actuator clip.

- Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. Disconnect the shift cable from the transmission column shift selector tube (7212). Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
- Push the rubber grommet and shift cable through the bulkhead.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Remove the transmission shift cable from the automatic transmission. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever (7A256). Depress the lock tabs to release the shift cable and disconnect the shift cable from the shift cable bracket.
- Remove the transmission shift cable bracket from the automatic transmission. Remove the bolts. Remove the transmission shift cable bracket.
