Conventional Ignition Switch System

The ignition switch is used to control the ignition states, including OFF, ACC, ON and START by providing input to the BCM . This allows some systems to be activated without starting the vehicle.

The BCM also sends a message over the CAN for modules to power up or power down, depending on the ignition state determined by the BCM .

OFF

The BCM supplies battery voltage to the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is in the OFF position, the switch is open preventing voltage output from being sent to the BCM .

ACC

When the ignition switch is in the ACC position, the switch routes voltage through the ACC-designated circuit to the BCM . When the BCM detects voltage from the ACC-designated circuit, it activates the accessory delay relay (by providing ground to the coil side of the relay) and sends a message over the CAN to other vehicle modules. This allows functionality of specific electrical systems without placing additional current drain on the battery from the powertrain electrical system when the vehicle is not running.

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the switch routes voltage through the ACC-designated and ON designated circuits to the BCM . When the BCM detects voltage from the ON-designated circuit, it activates the ignition relay (by providing ground to the coil side of the relay) and sends a message over the CAN to other vehicle modules.

START

When the ignition switch is in the START position, the switch routes voltage through the ON-designated circuitry to the BCM and a separate circuit to the PCM to start the vehicle. The circuit designated for the START mode is only used for vehicle starting.

While the engine is cranking, the BCM inhibits the accessory delay relay. After the vehicle starts, the BCM activates the accessory delay relay.

The PCM uses the ignition switch START input to determine when to activate the starter motor relay. For information on the starting system, Refer to the appropriate Engine Cooling article for the procedure.

Ignition Key Inhibit

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the ignition key cylinder inhibit feature prevents the ignition lock cylinder from being rotated to the OFF position when the vehicle is not in PARK.

Battery voltage is supplied to the inhibit solenoid within the ignition switch. A switch within the selector lever (floor shifter) controls the ground side of the inhibit solenoid. When the selector lever is in PARK, the switch is open, allowing the ignition lock cylinder to rotate through all its positions. When the selector lever is moved out of PARK, the switch closes and the ignition key inhibit solenoid energizes to prevent the ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch from rotating to the OFF position. This also prevents the key from being removed from the ignition lock cylinder.

Push Button Start System

The START/STOP button (ignition switch) is used to control the ON, OFF and START ignition modes.

Battery voltage is supplied to the push button ignition switch. When the button is pressed, voltage signals sent out on two separate circuits. One is provided to the BCM and the other is shared by the RFA module and the PCM , indicating a request to change the ignition state. Changing the ignition state from the OFF mode works in conjunction with the PATS . A programmed key is required to change the ignition from OFF to ON. With the ignition off and the START/STOP button is pressed, and the RFA module (or the BCM ) detects a programmed key, the BCM provides ground to the coil side of the ignition relay and sends an ignition status message over the CAN to other modules to indicate the ignition state change. Unlike a conventional ignition switch system, the push button start system does not have an ACC mode. The BCM only utilizes the OFF, ON and START modes. Each time the ignition state changes, the BCM sends ignition status change to other vehicle modules.

Refer to the following table for information about achieving the various ignition states.

The RFA module or the BCM must recognize a programmed key before the ignition state changes from OFF.

The BCM controls the relays providing voltage to the vehicle electrical systems. When the ignition is in the ON mode, a single press and release of the START/STOP button changes the ignition to the OFF mode. No programmed key is required to change the ignition to the OFF mode when the vehicle is running.

If the vehicle is in motion, a momentary press of the START/STOP button does not shut the vehicle off. If the vehicle is moving, the START/STOP button must be pressed and held for longer than one second to turn the ignition off.

When the ignition switch turns off, the BCM deactivates the ignition relay and communicates the state of the ignition to the other modules by sending a message over the CAN .

The RFA module or the BCM must recognize a programmed key before the ignition state changes out of OFF. When the START/STOP button is pressed with the ignition off, the RFA module (and if no key is detected the BCM ) checks for a programmed key as part of the PATS function. When the ignition is in the ON mode, the BCM activates the accessory delay and ignition relays (by providing ground to the coil side of the relays), and sends a message over the CAN to other vehicle modules.

When the vehicle enters ON mode, multiple indicators in the IPC prove out and the IPC displays the gear selection and the vehicle mileage.

When the START/STOP button is pressed with the brake pedal applied, the vehicle temporarily goes into the START mode until the vehicle starts (so long as a programmed key is detected within the vehicle).

While the BCM is in the START mode, it activates the ignition relay (by providing ground to the coil side of the relay) and sends a message over the to other vehicle modules. While the engine is cranking, the BCM inhibits the accessory delay relay. After the vehicle starts, the BCM activates the accessory delay relay (by providing ground to the coil side of the relay).

The PCM uses the voltage from push button ignition switch to determine when to activate the starter motor relay. For information on the starting system, Refer to the appropriate Engine Cooling article for the procedure.

Ignition System Message Center Messages

The message center provides instructions for operating the push button ignition system. The message center also displays warnings that indicate a potential concern with the system. These messages pertain to the push button ignition system

  1. PRESS BRAKE TO START - Momentarily displays when the start/stop switch is pressed without the brake pedal being applied.
  2. NO KEY DETECTED - Displays if a programmed passive key is not detected by the RFA module and the BCM when attempting to change the ignition mode out of OFF. If this message is observed with the passive key located inside the vehicle, Refer to: «PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (PATS) - SYSTEM OPERATION AND COMPONENT DESCRIPTION»(ref-658895-S02340281942014092900000) .

Multifunction Switches

The multifunction switches are used to control various systems (high beam headlamps, flash-to-pass, turn signal, trip computer display and windshield wiper/washer). The BCM controls the exterior lighting and the windshield wipers/washers.

  1. Left multifunction switch - mounted to the left side of the steering column and provides control for the turn signals, the low/high beams and the flash-to-pass function.   2. Right multifunction switch - mounted on the right side of the steering column and provides control for the windshield wipers and washers and the rear window wiper and washer. Steering Wheel Switches

The steering wheel switches are comprised of an upper and lower switch cluster mounted on each side of the steering wheel, facing the driver.

  1. Lower left steering wheel switch - mounted on the lower left side of the steering wheel and provides control for the cruise control system.   2. Lower right steering wheel switch - mounted on the lower right side of the steering wheel and provides control for the audio system. For additional information regarding the audio system, Refer to the appropriate Information and Entertainment System article for the procedure.
  3. Upper left steering wheel switch - mounted on the upper left side of the steering wheel and provides control for the message center menu in the IPC .   4. Upper right steering wheel switch - mounted on the upper right side of the steering wheel and provides control of infotainment and SYNC displayed on the FDIM . For additional information regarding the infotainment and SYNC system, Refer to the appropriate Information and Entertainment System article for the procedure.

Conventional Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is a multiple position rotary switch that is controlled by a lock cylinder and a key. The ignition switch provides voltage to the ACC, ON, or START-designated circuits depending on the position it is placed. The BCM calculates the positions based on the voltage received from the ACC and ON-designated circuits.

The key removal inhibit solenoid (also known as the key release interlock actuator) is an electronically controlled solenoid that prevents the ignition lock cylinder from being turned to the OFF position unless the gear selector lever is in the PARK position. The key removal inhibit solenoid is part of the ignition switch.

Push Button Ignition Switch

The push button ignition switch is used instead of a conventional ignition switch to achieve the various ignition modes. The push button ignition switch is a momentary dual contact switch. Both sets of contacts are normally open and receive voltage at all times. When the START/STOP button is pressed, the voltage is sent to the BCM , the RFA module and the PCM to indicate a button press.

The ignition switch has a LED for switch illumination when the backlighting is activated.

RFA Module

The RFA module performs the initial search for a programmed key. The RFA module sends a message over the MS-CAN to the BCM indicating whether or not a programmed key is detected. If no programmed key is detected, the BCM activates the PATS transceiver in an attempt to detect a programmed key in the back location. For additional PATS information

The RFA module does not require PMI when replaced.

BCM

The BCM determines the ignition mode based on the push button ignition switch input, the stoplamp switch input and RFA module messages. The BCM communicates the ignition mode to the other modules over the MS-CAN .

The BCM monitors the push button ignition switch input and the ignition mode outputs. If a fault is detected with the ignition switch system, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) set in the BCM .

The BCM requires PMI when replaced.
