Selector lever cable

  1. At the transaxle end the selector lever cable is attached to a ball on the shift shaft lever through the transmission range (TR) sensor.
  2. The cable abutments are secured first to the transaxle housing and second to the bracket of the selector lever.
  3. The adjuster for the selector lever cable is located on the end of the shift cable at the transaxle.
  4. At the selector lever end the cable is clipped onto a ball.

  1. A quick-release fastener on the selector lever cable allows adjustment of the cable relative to the conduit.
  2. Adjustment is required if the transaxle or the selector lever has been removed, if the engine does not start in PARK or NEUTRAL in case of shift quality concerns or if the switch catches are incorrect.

To adjust the selector lever cable, the selector lever must be in DRIVE position.

First open the selector lever cable adjuster.

  1. To make sure the transaxle is in DRIVE position the cable should be removed from the shift shaft lever, the transaxle should be shifted in DRIVE and the selector lever cable should be clipped again onto the shift shaft lever.
  2. The selector lever cable must not be stressed. The selector lever cable must be free from binding.

The selector lever cable is locked by pressing the cable adjuster after making sure the shift mechanism is in DRIVE.

Selector Lever

Selector Lever Positions
PParkFor securing the vehicle. The engine can be started. Engage only when the vehicle is stationary (the automatic transaxle will be locked. PARK should be engaged when working on a vehicle when the engine is running). The selector lever can only be moved out of the PARK position if the ignition lock is in the second position and the foot brake pedal is depressed. In an emergency (battery discharged) the selector lever can be unlocked manually. (Scheme 96)
RReverseOnly engage when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is idling.
NNeutralThe engine can be started - no power transfer to the driving wheels.
DGears 1 to 4 (with overdrive)Position for normal driving. All 4 gears are shifted electronically. When the engine is stopped, this mode of operation is automatically enabled. For driving with and without overdrive - see overdrive spring loaded button.
DGears 1 to 3 (without overdrive)Position for normal driving, but without 4th gear. For driving with and without overdrive - see overdrive spring loaded button.

Location - The selector lever shift lock solenoid is located in the selector lever bracket.

When the ignition is switched ON, the selector lever shift lock solenoid is actuated by depressing the brake (signal from the stoplamp switch). This retracts the locking pin so that the selector lever can be moved out of PARK position.

  1. If the brake signal should fail due to a malfunction, manual unlocking is possible.
  2. The cover of the release mechanism must be removed and a suitable object (ignition key) pressed into the opening until the manual selector lever can be moved out of PARK position.

Scheme 98: Overdrive (O/D) switch

The O/D switch is located on the side of the selector lever.

The O/D switch transmits a signal to the PCM to select or suppress 4th gear in selector lever DRIVE position.

The signal of the O/D switch is used for the following functions

  1. as an input signal to convey the drivers' wishes to the PCM.
  2. to display the drivers' wishes with the O/D indicator in the instrument cluster.

No substitute signal is available for the O/D switch. If it should fail, it is always possible to shift into 4th gear in selector lever DRIVE position.

  1. The O/D indicator is located in the instrument cluster and is colored green.
  2. The O/D indicator is actuated by the O/D switch on the selector lever. It tells the driver that shifting into 4th gear is prevented by the transaxle control.

  1. To move the selector lever from the PARK position, the ignition lock must be turned to the second position, foot brake must be depressed and shift release button pressed in.
  2. The spring loaded side button must also be pressed, if the lever is moved from: N and D to 2 and 1. 1, 2, D and N to R and P. R to P.

Function - The O/D indicator lights to tell the driver that the transaxle control has switched to the emergency operating program or that the transmission fluid temperature is too high.

  1. A1 CHECK THE KEY REMOVAL INHIBIT CIRCUIT Turn the ignition ON, gear selection in PARK position. Can the ignition switch be turned to the OFF position only when the selector lever is in PARK? YES : Go to A2 . NO : If the ignition switch cannot be turned to the OFF position when the selector lever is in park, go to A11 . If the ignition switch can be turned to the OFF position when the selector lever is not in the PARK position, Go to A6 .
  2. A2 CHECK IF STOPLAMPS LIGHT Switch ON the ignition. Depress the brake pedal. Are the stoplamps ON? YES : Go to A3 . NO : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-278271) article.
  3. A3 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE PARK INTERLOCK SOLENOID Disconnect: Selector Lever Unit (C3233) Measure the voltage between selector lever C3233, pin 3 (GN/WH) and ground. Is the voltage 0 V when the brake pedal is not depressed, and is battery voltage indicated when the brake pedal is depressed? YES : Go to A4 . NO : REPAIR circuit 15S-TA33 between C2314 (stoplamp switch), pin 1 and C3233, pin 3 for open.
  4. A4 CHECK GROUND TO THE PARK INTERLOCK SOLENOID Measure the resistance between C3233, pin 1 (BK) and ground. Is resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A5 . NO : REPAIR circuit 31-TA34 between C3233, pin 1 and ground for open.
  5. A5 CHECK THE RANGE SELECTOR LEVER CIRCUIT Measure the resistance at range selector lever C3233, between pins 3 and 1. Selector lever in PARK. Is resistance between 20 ohms and 35 ohms? YES : Park interlock solenoid is electrically OK. CHECK for mechanical fault. NO : INSTALL a new park interlock solenoid.
  6. A6 CHECK FUSE F1.8 (30A) IN THE BATTERY JUNCTION BOX (BJB) Check fuse: F1.8 (30 A) Is the fuse F1.8 OK? YES : Go to A8 . NO : Go to A7 .
  7. A7 CHECK CIRCUIT 30-BB9 (RD) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Starter Relay Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250 Measure the resistance between the output side of fuse F1.8 (30A) and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : REPAIR starter motor circuit 50-BB12 (GY) for a short to ground. NO : REPAIR circuit 30-BB9 (RD).
  8. A8 CHECK CIRCUIT 30-BB9 (RD) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250 Measure the resistance between the output side of fuse F1.8 (30A) and ignition switch C250, pin 4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A9 . NO : REPAIR circuit 30-BB9 (RD) for an open.
  9. A9 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-TA34 (BK/YE) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250, pin 3 and selector lever unit C3233, pin 2. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : Go to A10 . NO : REPAIR circuit 31S-TA34 (BK/YE).
  10. A10 CHECK THE GEARSHIFT LEVER UNIT Measure the resistance between range selector lever unit C3233 component side, pins 2 and 1 with the range selector lever in positions R, N, D, 1 and 2. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : INSTALL a new key removal inhibit solenoid. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : INSTALL a new selector lever. TEST the system for normal operation.
  11. A11 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-TA34 (BK/YE) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Generic Electronic Module (GEM) C201d Disconnect: Selector Lever C3233 Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250 Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250, pin 3 and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to A12 . NO : REPAIR circuit 31S-TA34 (BK/YE) for a short to ground.
  12. A12 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH AND IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER FOR MECHANICAL DAMAGE Connect: GEM C201d Connect: Selector Lever C3233 Connect: Ignition Switch C250 Remove BJB fuse F1.8 (30A) and attempt to turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Does the ignition cylinder turn to the OFF position? YES : INSTALL a new selector lever. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : INSPECT the ignition switch and ignition lock cylinder for damage. REPAIR or INSTALL new as required.

  1. B1 CHECK CIRCUIT 15-TA21 (GN/BK) FOR VOLTAGE Key in ON position. Measure circuit 15-TA21 (GN/BK) for voltage at range selector lever C3233, pin 5. Is voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to B2 . NO : REPAIR circuit 15-TA21 (GN/BK) for open. TEST the system for normal operation.
  2. B2 TEST THE OVERDRIVE SWITCH Measure the resistance between range selector lever unit C3233, pin 5 and pin 6 with the overdrive (O/D) switch pressed and released. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms when pressed and greater than 10,000 ohms when released? YES : Go to B3 . NO : CHECK range selector lever harness for broken or damaged wires. If harness is OK, INSTALL a new gearshift lever knob.
  3. B3 CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: PCM C175 Inspect for damaged or pushed-out pins, corrosion or loose wires. Repair as necessary. Measure circuit 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) for resistance to ground at PCM C175, pin 29. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to B4 . NO : REPAIR circuit 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) for a short to ground. TEST the system for normal operation.
  4. B4 CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: PCM C175 Inspect for damaged or pushed-out pins, corrosion or loose wires. Repair as necessary. Disconnect: Range Selector Lever C3233 Measure the resistance of circuit 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) between PCM C175, pin 29 and range selector lever C3233, pin 6. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : INSTALL a new PCM. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : REPAIR circuit 15S-TA21 (GN/BK) for open. TEST the system for normal operation.
