TROUBLE SHOOTING
Check battery for state of charge. Check cable connections at battery and starter motor. Ensure transmission is fully engaged in Park or Neutral (A/T), or clutch pedal is fully depressed (M/T). Check fuses No. 8 (30-amp) in battery junction box. On models equipped with anti-theft system, ensure anti-theft system is operating properly. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.
TEST A: STARTER DOES NOT CRANK BUT RELAY CLICKS
- Check battery condition. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is not okay, replace battery and/or repair charging system as necessary.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove starter relay from central junction box. Test starter relay. See «STARTER RELAY»(ref-168168-S16533705252004110200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If starter relay is okay, go to next step. If starter relay is defective, replace starter relay. Retest for normal operation.
- Measure voltage between ground and starter relay cavity No. 30. (Scheme 1) Turn ignition switch to START position. If the voltage is greater than 10 volts and the vehicle is equipped with a automatic transaxle, go to next step. If the voltage is greater than 10 volts and the vehicle is equipped with a manual transaxle, go to step 6. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000). Retest for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector. Measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 87 and TR sensor connector terminal No. 6. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 2). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair circuit between TR sensor and starter relay. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000). Retest for normal operation.
- Disconnect starter motor connector. Measure resistance between Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector terminal 9 and starter motor connector terminal No. 2. (Scheme 2) If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 7. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair circuit between starter motor and TR sensor connector. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000). Retest for normal operation.
- Disconnect starter motor connector. Measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 87 and starter motor connector terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair circuit between starter motor and starter relay. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000). Retest for normal operation.
- Models with A/T connect Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector. All models install starter relay. Measure the voltage between starter motor connector terminal No. 1 (component side) and the positive battery post with the ignition switch in the ON/RUN position. If the voltage is more than.5 volt, clean and tighten all positive battery connections. Retest the system, if concern still exists, install a NEW positive battery cable. Retest for normal operation. If the voltage is less than.5 volt and the vehicle is equipped with a automatic transaxle, go to next step. If the voltage is less than.5 volt and the vehicle is equipped with a manual transaxle, replace starter motor. See «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-168168-S10183695902004110200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest for normal operation.
- Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector. Measure the resistance between Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector terminals No. 6 and 9 (component side) with the vehicle in Park and Neutral. If the resistance is 5 ohms or more, adjust TR sensor. See «TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR»(ref-168168-S06708628942004110200000) under ADJUSTMENTS. If concern still exists, replace TR sensor. Retest for normal operation. If the resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace starter motor. See «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-168168-S10183695902004110200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest for normal operation.

TEST B: STARTER DOES NOT CRANK & RELAY DOES NOT CLICK
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position and observe Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) warning indicator. If warning indicator does not flash when attempting to start vehicle, go to next step. If warning indicator flashes when attempting to start vehicle, repair anti-theft system as necessary. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
- Remove starter relay from central junction box. Test starter relay. See «STARTER RELAY»(ref-168168-S16533705252004110200000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If starter relay tests okay, go to next step. If starter relay does not test okay, replace starter relay.
- Check battery condition. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is not okay, replace battery and/or repair charging system as necessary.
- Measure voltage between ground and starter relay cavity No. 85 with ignition switch in START position. (Scheme 1) If voltage is greater than 10 volts, vehicles with A/T go to next step, vehicles with M/T go to step 6. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C175 (2.0L) or connector C175b (2.3L). On 2.0L, measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 86 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 27 (Black/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 3). On 2.3L, measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 86 and PCM harness connector C175b terminal No. 2 (Black/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). On all models, if resistance is 5 ohms or less, the fault is within the anti-theft system. Repair as necessary. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Red wire between PCM and starter relay. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000).
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector C175 (2.0L) or connector C175b (2.3L). Depress the clutch pedal. On 2.0L, measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 86 and PCM harness connector C175 terminal No. 27 (Black/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 3). On 2.3L, measure resistance between starter relay cavity No. 86 and PCM harness connector C175b terminal No. 2 (Black/Red wire). (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 4). On all models, if resistance is 5 ohms or less, the fault is within the anti-theft system. Repair as necessary. See appropriate ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect start inhibit switch harness connector. Measure resistance between start inhibit switch connector terminals No. 1 and 2 (component side). Depress and release clutch pedal. Resistance should be 5 ohms or less with clutch pedal depressed and greater than 10 k/ohms with clutch pedal released. If resistance is as specified, repair Black/Red wire between start inhibit switch and starter relay, and/or between start inhibit switch and PCM. If resistance is not as specified, replace start inhibit switch. Retest for normal operation.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector C250. Measure voltage between ground and ignition switch harness connector terminal No. 4 (Red wire). (Scheme 5) If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-168168-S18282539322004110200000). Retest for normal operation. If fault is still present, repair or replace battery junction box as necessary.
- Measure resistance of Gray/Black wire between ignition switch harness connector terminal No. 7 and starter relay cavity No. 85. (Scheme 1)and (Scheme 5). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace ignition switch. Retest for normal operation. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Black wire between ignition switch and starter relay. Retest for normal operation.

TEST C: STARTER CRANKS SLOWLY
- Ensure battery is fully charged. Engage parking brake and place transmission selector in Neutral. Connect Starter, Alternator, Battery, and Regulator (SABRE) tester, or equivalent. Follow tester manufacturer's instructions. If starter tests okay, go to next step. If starter does not test okay, replace starter. See «STARTER MOTOR»(ref-168168-S10183695902004110200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Measure the voltage between starter motor connector terminal No. 1 (component side) and the positive battery post with the ignition switch in the ON/RUN position. If voltmeter displays less than .5 volt, go to next step. If voltmeter displays greater than .5 volt, clean and tighten all positive battery terminal connections. If fault is still present, replace positive battery cable. Retest for normal operation.
- Measure voltage between starter housing and negative battery cable, with ignition switch in ON/RUN position. If voltmeter displays less than .5 volt, repair charging system. See appropriate CHARGING SYSTEM article in ELECTRICAL. If voltmeter displays greater than .5 volt, clean and tighten all negative battery cable connections, starter motor mounting and body to engine grounds. If concern still exists, replace negative battery cable. Restore electrical connections and retest system operation.
STARTER MOTOR NO-LOAD TEST
Remove the starter motor. See STARTER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect Starter, Alternator, Battery, and Regulator (SABRE) tester, or equivalent. Follow tester manufacturer's instructions.
STARTER MOTOR LOAD TEST
The battery must be fully charged before carrying out the starter motor load test. Set the parking brake and shift the transmission into Neutral. Connect Starter, Alternator, Battery, and Regulator (SABRE) tester, or equivalent. Follow tester manufacturer's instructions.
