Removal & Installation (2.0L Zetec-E)
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. Before testing starter, ensure transmission is in Park or Neutral. |
Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector. Disconnect the breather pipe. Disconnect the air cleaner outlet tube from the throttle body and remove the air cleaner. Remove the two starter motor upper bolts. (Scheme 6) Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter solenoid wire connections. Remove the lower starter motor mounting bolt. (Scheme 7) Remove starter motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure negative battery cable is installed with starter mounting upper bolt. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Removal & Installation (2.0L SPI)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner outlet tube. Remove the two upper starter motor mounting bolts. (Scheme 8) Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect starter solenoid wire connections. Remove the lower starter motor mounting bolt. (Scheme 9) Remove starter motor. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Removal & Installation (SVT)
Remove intake manifold. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors. Remove 3 starter motor mounting bolts and remove starter. (Scheme 10) To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.

Removal & Installation (2.3L)
Disconnect the battery ground cable. With the vehicle in Neutral, position it on a hoist. Remove the solenoid terminal nuts and disconnect the wiring. Remove the nuts and detach the power steering pressure line brackets from the stud bolts. (Scheme 11) Remove the starter mounting bolts and the starter motor. (Scheme 12) To install, reverse the removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS.
