TROUBLE SHOOTING
Note. For additional trouble shooting, see CHARGING SYSTEM - GENERAL TROUBLE SHOOTING article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
Verify customer's complaint. Verify battery condition. Inspect accessory drive belt and tensioner. Inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). Check all connections for looseness or corrosion. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, perform self-diagnostics. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .
GENERATOR LOAD TEST
- Ensure drive belt is in good condition. Replace belt as necessary. If belt is okay, connect charging system load tester in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Start and run engine at 2000 RPM, and apply load until generator output levels off. Generator amperage should be at least 65 amps (2.0L) or 61 amps (2.3L) with engine at 2000 RPM. Go to next step.
- Turn A/C system on. Turn blower speed to high. Turn headlights on to high beams. Voltage should increase a minimum of .5 volts. If voltage is as specified, system is operating properly at this time. If voltage is not as specified, perform «GENERATOR NO-LOAD TEST»(ref-139409-S11903950862004080500000) .
GENERATOR NO-LOAD TEST
Switch tester to voltmeter function. Connect voltmeter positive lead to B+ terminal on generator and negative lead to ground. Turn all electrical accessories off. Start and run engine up to 2000 RPM. Read voltmeter when voltage stabilizes. Voltage should be 13-15 volts. If voltage is not as specified, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are present, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.
TEST A: WARNING INDICATOR ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING
- Test battery condition. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is defective, replace battery.
- Remove and inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse. If fuse blows again, repair short to ground in Red wire.
- Perform «GENERATOR LOAD TEST»(ref-139409-S06066322542004080500000) under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If generator output is okay, diagnose charging system warning indicator. See appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If generator output is not okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between negative battery terminal and generator housing. If voltage is less than.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is greater than.5 volt, clean and tighten generator mounting and negative battery cable connection. If fault is still present, replace negative battery cable.
- Measure voltage between generator terminal B+ and positive battery terminal. (Scheme 1) If voltage is less than.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is greater than.5 volt, clean and tighten positive battery cable connection. Retest system operation. If fault is still present, replace positive battery cable.
- Measure voltage of Red wire at generator terminal B+. (Scheme 1) If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair Red wire between generator and battery junction box. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-139409-S23234921592002043000000). Retest system operation.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 3-pin connector. Measure voltage at generator 3-pin harness connector terminal No. 3 (Red wire). (Scheme 2) If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, inspect battery junction box fuse No. 10 (10-amp). If fuse is blown, replace fuse and retest system operation. If fuse is okay, repair open in Red wire between generator and battery junction box. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-139409-S23234921592002043000000). Retest system operation.
- Reconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition on. Using NGS tester, retrieve and record PCM DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If no DTCs are retrieved, replace generator. See «GENERATOR»(ref-139409-S41447822802002043000000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.

TEST B: RADIO INTERFERENCE
Start engine and let idle. Tune radio to station where interference is present. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Start engine and let idle. If interference is still present, repair radio concern. If interference is not still present, replace generator.
