Adding Refrigerant Oil After A/C Compressor Replacement

1. Remove the A/C compressor drain bolt, rotate the old A/C compressor shaft 6 to 8 revolutions while collecting oil in a clean measuring device. To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). If the amount of oil drained from the old A/C compressor is less than 89 ml (3.01 fl. oz), remove 118 ml (3.99 fl. oz) from the new A/C compressor. If the amount of oil drained from the old A/C compressor is 89 ml (3.01 fl. oz), remove 89 ml (3.01 fl. oz) from the new A/C compressor. If the amount of oil drained from the old A/C compressor is 118 ml (3.99 fl. oz), remove 59 ml (1.99 fl. oz) from the new A/C compressor. If the amount of oil drained from the old A/C compressor is 148 ml (5 fl. oz), remove 29 ml (0.98 fl. oz) from the new A/C compressor. If the amount of oil drained from the old A/C compressor is greater than 148 ml (5 fl. oz), remove 0 ml (0 fl. oz) from the new A/C compressor.

Adding Refrigerant Oil After Multiple Component Replacement After A/C System Contamination

Note. This refrigerant oil adding method is to be used when a new A/C compressor, suction accumulator or receiver drier and evaporator core orifice or TXV have been installed due to system contamination and the A/C system has been flushed.

1. If the new A/C compressor is shipped with a new clutch and pulley already installed, remove the A/C drain bolt (if equipped) remove the shipping caps and rotate the new A/C compressor shaft 6 to 8 revolutions while collecting the oil in a clean measuring cup. To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
2. Add 60 ml (2.03 fl. oz) directly to the new A/C compressor suction port.
3. Inject the total vehicle PAG oil capacity minus 60 ml (2.03 fl. oz) to the low-side service port during system charging. For the total PAG oil capacity specification, REFER to «General Specifications»(ref-517581-S23940099302012121200000) .

Removal

Note. If installing a new A/C compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, carry out the following procedures to remove contamination from the A/C system. Failure to remove contamination will result in poor A/C performance and/or damage to the A/C system components.

1. If A/C flushing equipment is available, carry out flushing of the A/C system prior to installing a new A/C compressor. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Flushing»(ref-517581-S41133830542012121200000) .
2. If A/C flushing equipment is not available, carry out filtering of the A/C system after a new A/C compressor has been installed. REFER to «Refrigerant System Filtering Following Air Conditioning (AC) Compressor Installation»(ref-517581-S23562135302012121200000) .
3. Install a new TXV, as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.
4. Install a new receiver/drier desiccant cartridge as directed by the A/C flushing or filtering procedure.

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier desiccant cartridge is not required when installing a new A/C compressor, except when there is physical evidence of a failed A/C compressor, or damage to the receiver/drier desiccant cartridge.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-517532-S17733021342012121200000) for lifting points.
2. If flushing of the A/C system has not been carried out, recover the refrigerant. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .
3. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
4. Remove the A/C compressor. Detach the wire harness pin-type retainer, disconnect the field coil and control valve electrical connectors. Remove the A/C compressor suction and discharge fitting nuts and disconnect the fittings. Discard the O-ring seal. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in). Remove the A/C compressor mounting nut, completely loosen the A/C compressor mounting stud, remove the A/C compressor bolts and remove the A/C compressor. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gasket seals and O-ring seals. If filtering of the A/C system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .
2. Tighten the A/C compressor bolts and nut in the sequence shown in illustration. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

3. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
4. Disconnect the field coil electrical connector and detach wiring harness from the A/C compressor and position aside.
5. Remove the rear A/C compressor bolt.
6. Remove the A/C compressor suction fitting bolt and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal.
7. Remove the A/C compressor discharge fitting bolt and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal.
8. Remove the A/C compressor nut and stud.
9. Remove the upper A/C compressor bolt.
10. Remove the A/C compressor.

Installation

1. NOTE: The service A/C compressor for this vehicle is shipped from the factory with PAG oil installed. The refrigerant oil adding procedure specified for this vehicle must be followed to avoid installing excessive PAG oil in the refrigerant system. If filtering of the A/C system is not to be carried out, lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil. REFER to «Refrigerant Oil Adding»(ref-517581-S42144490632012121200000)
2. Install the compressor and upper A/C compressor bolt, but do not tighten.
3. Install the A/C compressor stud. Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
4. Connect the A/C compressor discharge fitting and install the A/C compressor discharge fitting bolt. Install a new O-ring seal lubricated in clean PAG oil. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
5. Connect the A/C compressor suction fitting and install the A/C compressor suction fitting bolt. Install a new O-ring seal lubricated in clean PAG oil. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
6. Tighten the A/C compressor bolt and nut. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
7. Install the rear A/C compressor bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
8. Position back and attach wiring harness to the A/C compressor and connect the field coil connector.
9. Install the drive belt.
10. If filtering of the A/C system is not to be carried out, evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .

1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing. REFER to «Heater Core And Evaporator Core Housing»(ref-517581-S29705447012012121200000) .
2. Remove the 5 air inlet duct screws.
3. Remove the air inlet duct.

2. Install the 5 air inlet duct screws.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-517532-S17733021342012121200000) for lifting points.
2. Detach the lower bumper grill from the lower bumper by pushing the grill toward the rear of the vehicle at each of the fastener locations. Once the grille is detached, position the grille out of the way inside the lower bumper to gain access to the ambient air temperature sensor.
3. Disconnect the ambient air temperature sensor electrical connector and remove the ambient air temperature sensor.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Remove the 3 RH lower instrument panel insulator retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
2. Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
3. Depressor the 2 retaining tabs and detach the blower motor vent tube from the heater core and evaporator core housing.
4. NOTE: The blower motor vent tube must be completely detached from the heater core and evaporator core housing to allow the blower motor to be rotated. Rotate the blower motor counterclockwise to detach it from the heater core and evaporator core housing and remove the blower motor.

1. Install the blower motor and rotate clockwise to attach it to the heater core and evaporator core housing.
2. Install the blower motor vent tube to the heater core and evaporator core housing.
3. Connect the blower motor electrical connector.
4. Install the RH lower instrument panel insulator and the 3 RH lower instrument panel insulator retainers.

1. Remove the 3 RH lower instrument panel insulator retainers and the RH lower instrument panel insulator.
2. Disconnect the blower motor speed control electrical connector.
3. Remove the 2 blower motor speed control screws.
4. Remove the blower motor speed control.

1. Install the blower motor speed control.
2. Install the blower motor speed control screws.
3. Connect the blower motor speed control electrical connector.
4. Install the RH lower instrument panel insulator and the 3 RH lower instrument panel insulator retainers.

1. Detach the glove box dampener string from the glove box bin and lower the glove box.
2. Remove the cabin air filter access door.
3. Remove the cabin air filter.

2. Remove the rear A/C compressor bolt.
3. Remove the A/C compressor discharge fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal.
4. Disconnect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.
5. Remove the condenser inlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal.
6. Remove the compressor-to-condenser discharge line.

1. Install the compressor-to-condenser discharge line.
2. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the condenser inlet fitting and install the nut. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
3. Connect the A/C pressure transducer electrical connector.
4. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the A/C compressor discharge fitting and install the nut. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
5. Install the rear A/C compressor bolt. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
6. Recharge the A/C system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gaskets seals and O-rings seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system, REFER to «Refrigerant Oil Adding»(ref-517581-S42144490632012121200000) .
2. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .
3. Fill the transmission fluid level. REFER to «TRANSMISSION FLUID DRAIN AND REFILL»(ref-538870-S39273309952013033000000) .

1. NOTE: The A/C condenser for this vehicle is produced from the factory with a receiver/drier cartridge installed in the integrated receiver/drier. This receiver/drier cartridge may become contaminated with moisture if the A/C condenser is not installed for an extended period of time. Since it cannot be determined how much time has elapsed between production and installation of the unit as a service part, the receiver/drier cartridge must be removed and replaced with the separate receiver/drier cartridge, which is supplied together with the A A/C condenser service part kit. REFER to «Receiver Drier Cartridge - 3.5L Ti-VCT»(ref-517581-S33182620722012121200000) . NOTE: The O-ring seals used on this vehicle are not interchangeable with all similarly sized O-ring seals used on other Ford products. Use only the O-ring seals specified for this vehicle. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-517532-S17733021342012121200000) for lifting points.
2. Remove the radiator. REFER to «RADIATOR - 3.5L TI-VCT»(ref-517561-S32759036082012121200000) .
3. Remove the condenser outlet and inlet fitting bolts and disconnect the fittings. Discard the O-ring seals. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
4. Release the 2 transmission cooler hose clamps and disconnect the lines from the condenser core.
5. Remove the 2 condenser core bolts. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
6. Remove the condenser core.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new O-ring seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. REFER to «Refrigerant Oil Adding»(ref-517581-S42144490632012121200000) .
2. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .

Note. The evaporator core is available only as part of the heater core and evaporator core housing.

1. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing. REFER to «Heater Core And Evaporator Core Housing»(ref-517581-S29705447012012121200000) .

1. Transfer the components from the old housing to the new housing as required.
2. Install the heater core and evaporator core housing. REFER to «Heater Core And Evaporator Core Housing»(ref-517581-S29705447012012121200000) .

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be pressure leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. REFER to Heater Core Component Test.

2. Remove the dash panel seal.
3. Remove the 3 heater core tube support bracket screws and heater core tube support bracket.
4. Remove the 10 plenum chamber screws and separate the heater core and evaporator core housing.
5. Remove the heater core.

1. Install the heater core.
2. Connect the heater core and evaporator core housing and install the 10 plenum chamber screws.
3. Install the heater core tube support bracket and the 3 support bracket screws.
4. Install the dash panel seal.
5. Install the heater core and evaporator core housing. REFER to «Heater Core And Evaporator Core Housing»(ref-517581-S29705447012012121200000) .

Note. If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be pressure leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. REFER to Heater Core Component Test.

1. Remove the instrument panel assembly. REFER to «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-517618-S30767062792012121200000) .
2. Position the instrument panel with the passenger side supported as shown in illustration.
3. Remove the 3 instrument panel insulator screws and remove instrument panel insulator.
4. Remove the 2 RFA module nuts and remove the RFA module.
5. Remove the 2 floor duct screws and remove the floor duct.
6. Detach the in-vehicle temperature sensor aspirator from the heater core and evaporator core housing.
7. Remove the 6 heater core and evaporator core housing bolts.
8. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors and detach the wire harness pin-type retainer.
9. Detach the 4 wire harness pin-type retainers and disconnect the electrical connector.
10. Disconnect the 3 electrical connectors, detach the wire harness pin-type retainer and detach the instrument panel wire harness from the heater core and evaporator core housing.
11. Remove the heater core and evaporator core housing.

1. Install the heater core and evaporator core housing.
2. Attach the instrument panel wire harness to the heater core and evaporator, attach the wire harness pin-type retainers and connect the 3 electrical connectors.
3. Connect the electrical connector and attach the 3 wire harness pin-type retainers.
4. Attach the wire harness pin-type retainer and connect the 3 electrical connectors.
5. Install the 6 heater core and evaporator core housing bolts. Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
6. Attach the in-vehicle temperature sensor aspirator to the heater core and evaporator core housing.
7. Install the floor duct and the 2 floor duct screws.
8. Install the RFA module and install the 2 RFA module nuts.
9. Install the instrument panel insulator and the 3 instrument panel insulator screws. Tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
10. Install the instrument panel. REFER to «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-517618-S30767062792012121200000) .

1. Remove the ACM. REFER to «AUDIO CONTROL MODULE (ACM)»(ref-538889-S26082881932013033000000) .
2. Remove the HVAC module. Remove the HVAC module screw. Disconnect the HVAC module electrical connectors. Remove the HVAC module.

3. Disconnect the glove compartment electrical connector.

5. Remove the 2 air inlet mode door actuator screws.
6. Disconnect the air inlet mode door actuator electrical connector.

3. NOTE: The upper rear mode door actuator screw can be accessed through the instrument cluster opening using a swivel-type socket and extension. Remove the 3 defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator screws.
4. Disconnect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator electrical connector.
5. Remove the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Note. Care must be taken to minimize exposure of the inside of the receiver/drier to outside air. If multiple Air Conditioning (A/C) system components are being removed and installed, the receiver/drier should be installed last. The receiver/drier shipping caps should not be removed until the fittings are ready to be connected. Evacuation of the A/C system must be started as soon as the receiver/drier is installed. Excessive exposure of the inside of the receiver/drier to outside air will result in moisture contamination of the receiver/drier desiccant.

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier is not required when repairing the A/C system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver/drier. Damage to the receiver/drier includes leaks in the receiver/drier, physical damage to the receiver/drier shell or desiccant, or moisture contamination. Moisture contamination results only from a complete loss of refrigerant and equalization of the refrigerant system pressure with atmospheric pressure for a period longer than one hour. If even a slight amount of positive refrigerant pressure is present in the system before repairs are carried out, the receiver/drier should not be replaced.

5. Position aside the TXV manifold and tube assembly line. Detach the receiver/drier outlet line clip. Remove the receiver/drier outlet fitting nut and disconnect the fitting. Discard the O-ring seal and gasket seal. Tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
6. Remove the 2 degas bottle bolts and position the degas bottle aside.
7. Remove the 2 receiver/drier bolts and remove the receiver/drier.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install new gaskets seals and O-rings seals. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system, REFER to «Refrigerant Oil Adding»(ref-517581-S42144490632012121200000) .
2. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .

Note. Installation of a new receiver/drier desiccant bag is not required when repairing the A/C system, except when there is physical evidence of contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the receiver/drier desiccant bag. Damage to the receiver/drier desiccant bag includes physical damage to the receiver/drier desiccant bag or moisture contamination. Moisture contamination results only from a complete loss of refrigerant and equalization of the refrigerant system pressure with atmospheric pressure for a period longer than one hour. If even a slight amount of positive refrigerant pressure is present in the system before repairs are carried out, the receiver/drier desiccant bag should not be replaced.

1. Recover the refrigerant. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .
2. Measure the diameter of the access hole. If the measurement is less then 40mm proceed to step 3. If the measurement is 40mm or greater proceed to step 4.
3. Remove 3.0 mm (0.118 in) of material from the inboard and front of the opening utilizing a rotary tool.
4. Cut the excess foam from the lower radiator support.
5. Remove the receiver/drier plug. To install, tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
6. Using pliers, grasp and remove the receiver/drier desiccant bag.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the O-ring seal on the new receiver/drier plug with clean PAG oil. Add the correct amount of clean PAG oil to the refrigerant system. REFER to «Refrigerant Oil Adding»(ref-517581-S42144490632012121200000) .
2. Evacuate, leak test and charge the refrigerant system. REFER to «Air Conditioning (AC) System Recovery, Evacuation, and Charging»(ref-517581-S30981876462012121200000) .

5. Detach the instrument panel wire harness pin-type retainer from the heater core and evaporator core housing support.
6. Remove the 2 RH temperature blend door actuator screws.
7. Disconnect the RH temperature blend door actuator electrical connector.
8. Remove the RH temperature blend door actuator.
