Possible Causes

Thermostat

A new thermostat should be installed only after the following electrical and mechanical tests have been carried out.

Thermostat - Electrical Test (3.0L Only)

Note. The electrical thermostat test is most accurate if carried out indoors at less than 37.8°C (100°F) ambient air. This test can be carried out with or without the hood open and with the engine warm or cold.

  1. Check the engine coolant level. Fill as needed.
  2. With the ignition OFF, attach the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. It may be used to monitor sensor voltage values between 0 - 5 volts.
  3. Place the transmission in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).
  4. Start the engine and allow the engine to idle throughout this test. Allow the engine to run for two minutes, then record the ECT voltage. Record the ECT voltage every 60 seconds. When the ECT voltage trend changes direction or only changes slightly (0.03 volt or less) from the previous reading, record this as the thermostat opening voltage. Use the voltage and corresponding coolant temperature chart listed below.   5. If the thermostat opening voltage is greater than 0.75 volt and less than 78°C (173°F), install a new thermostat.
  6. If the thermostat opening voltage is less than 0.75 volt and greater than 78°C (173°F), the thermostat is good and a new thermostat is not required. GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-232207-S37860093612006051600000) .

Thermostat - Mechanical Test

  1. Remove the thermostat housing.
  2. Immerse the thermostat housing and thermostat in a boiling antifreeze and water mixture.
  3. See the «GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS CHART»(ref-232207-S17718497892006051600000) for thermostat opening temperatures.

Cooling Fan Motor and Shroud

  1. Inspect the fan blade and shroud for any foreign materials. Clear the obstruction and continue the test procedure.
  2. Rotate the fan to see if any contact between the shroud and blade exists. If contact is observed, install a new fan shroud assembly.
  3. Rotate the fan by hand. The fan should rotate freely (no resistance should be felt, the fan will free-wheel with minimum effort). If any resistance is present, install a new fan assembly.

Filling and Bleeding with RADKITPLUS

  1. Using the special tool, install the RADKITPLUS and follow the manufacturer's instructions to fill and bleed the cooling system.

Filling and Bleeding without RADKITPLUS

CAUTIONEngine coolant provides freeze protection, boil protection, cooling efficiency and corrosion protection to the engine and cooling components. In order to obtain these protections, the engine coolant must be maintained at the correct concentration and fluid level in the degas bottle. When adding engine coolant, use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water. To maintain the integrity of the coolant and the cooling system: Vehicle cooling systems are filled with Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant. Always fill the cooling system with the same coolant that is present in the system. Do not mix coolant types. Do not add/mix orange-colored Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant VC-2 or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D or green colored Premium Engine Coolant. Mixing coolants may degrade the coolant's corrosion protection. Do not add alcohol, methanol, brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze. These can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. Ford Motor Company does NOT recommend the use of recycled engine coolant in vehicles originally equipped with Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant since a Ford-approved recycling process is not yet available. Used engine coolant should be disposed of in an appropriate manner. Follow your community's regulations and standards for recycling and disposing of automotive fluids.

Note. The addition of Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets VC-6 or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M99B37-B6 darkens Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan.

  1. Add the correct engine coolant mixture to the degas bottle until the coolant level is between the "COOLANT FILL LEVEL" marks.
  2. Select the maximum heater temperature and blower motor speed settings. Position the control to discharge air at vents in the instrument panel.
  3. Start the engine and allow to idle. While engine is idling, feel for hot air at vents.
  4. Start the engine and allow to idle until normal operating temperature is reached. Hot air should discharge from vents. The engine coolant temperature gauge should maintain a stabilized reading in the middle of the NORMAL range and the upper radiator hose should feel hot to the touch.
  5. Shut the engine OFF and allow to cool.
  6. Check the engine for coolant leaks.
  7. Check the engine coolant level in degas bottle and fill as necessary.

MATERIALS

  1. To remove rust, sludge and other foreign material from the cooling system, use cooling system flush that is safe for use with aluminum radiators, For additional information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-232207-S34693015382006051600000) . This cleaning restores cooling system efficiency and helps prevent overheating. A pulsating or reversed direction of flushing water will loosen sediment more quickly than a steady flow in the normal coolant flow direction. In severe cases where cleaning solvents will not clean the cooling system efficiently, it will be necessary to use the pressure flushing method using cooling system flusher. Dispose of old coolant and flushing water contaminated with antifreeze and cleaning chemicals in accordance with local, state or federal laws.
  2. Remove the radiator. For additional information, refer to «RADIATOR - 2.3L»(ref-232207-S35346987072006051600000) or «RADIATOR - 3.0L»(ref-232207-S29357835402006051600000) .
  3. Backflush the radiator with the radiator in an upside-down position with a high-pressure hose in the lower hose location and backflush.
  4. Remove the thermostat. For additional information, refer to «THERMOSTAT HOUSING - 2.3L»(ref-232207-S17792232472006051600000) or «THERMOSTAT - 3.0L (4V)»(ref-232207-S36605369912006051600000) .
  5. Backflush the engine. Position the high-pressure water hose into the engine through the engine return and backflush the engine.
