Removal

CAUTIONWhile repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can occur.

  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-210109) .
  2. Remove the return hose from the power steering pump and drain the power steering oil reservoir.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Lift the reservoir out of the reservoir bracket.
  5. Remove the reservoir bolts from the bracket.
  6. Remove the bolts and remove the bracket.
  7. Compress the clamps and disconnect the power steering return hose and the power steering reservoir pump hose from the reservoir.
  8. Remove the power steering oil reservoir.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  2. Fill and leak check the system. For additional information, refer to «STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-210123) .

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY»(ref-210125-S01265600142005121300000) .
  2. Disconnect the power steering reservoir pump hose and pressure line from the power steering pump. Drain the power steering oil reservoir.
  3. Remove the bolts and the pump.
  4. Remove the bolts and the pump.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new power steering seal on the power steering pressure fitting by stretching the seal over the seal replacer until it is large enough to slip over the threads of the fitting.
  6. Install the power steering pump pulley. For additional information, refer to «POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY»(ref-210125-S01265600142005121300000) .
  7. Fill and leak check the system. For additional information, refer to «STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-210123) .

  1. Remove the engine cooling fan. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-210133) .
  2. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the belt from the power steering pump pulley.
  3. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist.
  4. If equipped, remove the deflector shield.
  5. Using the special tool, remove the pulley. Inspect the pulley for paint marks in the web area near the hub. If there are 2 paint marks, install a new pulley. If there is no paint mark, use a paint pencil to mark the web area of the pulley near the hub.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  7. Using the special tool, install the pulley.

  1. Remove the transmission fluid cooler. For additional information, refer to «TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING»(ref-210157) .
  2. Disconnect the power steering hoses at the fluid cooler.
  3. Remove the 2 power steering cooler bolts and remove the power steering cooler.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install the transmission cooler. For additional information, refer to «TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING»(ref-210157) . Fill and leak check the system. For additional information, refer to «STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-210123) .

  1. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position and the ignition switch in the OFF position.
  2. Remove the bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the gear.
  3. Disconnect the lines. Discard the O-ring seals.
  4. With vehicle in NEUTRAL, place on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-210109) .
  5. Remove and discard the cotter pin and nut.
  6. Using the special tool, separate the drag link.
  7. Remove the bolts and the steering gear.
  8. Remove the bolts and the steering gear.
  9. Secure the steering gear in a vise and remove the nut and lock washer.
  10. Using the special tool, remove the steering gear sector shaft arm.
  11. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new high pressure hose O-ring seal (N803256-S) and a new return hose O-ring seal (N802357-S).
  12. Fill and leak check the system. For additional information, refer to «STEERING SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-210123) .
