Removal and Installation

Note. The 4R70W transmission is shown, this procedure is also used for the 4R100 transmission.

Note. To prevent shift cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket.

  1. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover, the driver side knee brace and the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement.
  2. Disconnect the shift cable. Disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
  3. Push the rubber grommet and the transmission shift cable through the bulkhead.
  4. Position the vehicle on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-210109) .
  5. Remove the shift cable. Disconnect the cable at the manual control lever. Press the lock tabs and remove the cable from the bracket. Remove the cable from the locator clip.
  6. Remove the shift cable bracket (all except vehicles equipped with 4.2L engine). Remove the bolts. Remove the shift cable bracket.
  7. Remove the shift cable bracket (vehicles equipped with 4.2L engine). Remove the bolt. Remove the nut. Remove the bracket.
  8. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. For additional information, refer to «GENERAL PROCEDURES»(ref-210158-S29872997842005121400000) .

  1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket.
  2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead.
  3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to «JACKING & LIFTING»(ref-210109) .
  5. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket.
  6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. Remove the bolts. Remove the shift cable bracket.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. For additional information, refer to «CABLE AND BRACKET ADJUSTMENT»(ref-210158-S21206851632005121400000) .
  8. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket.
  9. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. Remove the bolts. Remove the shift cable bracket.

  1. Remove the instrument panel cluster opening finish panel assembly.
  2. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder (11582). Position the lock cylinder to RUN. Using a suitable tool, push upward on the cylinder release tab through the hole in the lower shroud while pulling the cylinder outward.
  3. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
  4. Remove the transmission range selector lever. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
