Programming RKE Transmitter Without Scan Tool
For a customer to be able to program RKE transmitters themselves, at least one RKE transmitter must be programmed already. This procedure is to add additional transmitters. If all transmitters are lost, the DRBIII scan tool must be used to program the new transmitters. See Programming RKE Transmitter Using Scan Tool .
- Insert the key into the ignition switch, and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position (without starting the vehicle).
- Using the RKE transmitter programmed to the RKE module, press and continuously hold down the UNLOCK button for 4-10 seconds.
- Within the 4-10 second time range, continue to hold the UNLOCK button and press the PANIC button. Both buttons may then be released. Upon the PANIC button being depressed, the message for customer programming mode will be transmitted to the RKE module.
- A chime will be heard to verify that the customer programming mode has been entered.
- Press and release any button on each transmitter that is to be programmed to the RKE module, including any transmitters which were previously programmed to the RKE module (with a maximum of four possible). After each transmitter is successfully programmed, a chime will be heard to verify that successful programming of the transmitter has occurred.
- After thirty seconds, or upon the ignition switch being turned OFF, a chime will indicate that the RKE module has exited the programming mode.
Programming RKE Transmitter Using Scan Tool
Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, VTSS and MISC. Follow scan tool instructions.
Obtain vehicles unique PIN assigned to SKIM from vehicle owner or manufacturer. Cut blank key. Insert key into ignition switch. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, then SKIM. Select MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAM IGNITION KEY. Enter 4-digit PIN. When programming is completed, SKIM will exit SECURED ACCESS mode and display status of key. PROGRAMMING SUCCESSFUL is displayed if SKIM smart key programming succeeds. If ignition key programming is unsuccessful, one of the following status messages may be displayed
- LEARNED KEY IN IGNITION is displayed if key in the ignition switch has already been programmed into vehicles SKIM.
- 8 KEYS ALREADY LEARNED, PROGRAMMING NOT DONE is displayed if 8 keys have already been programmed into SKIM. If a new key needs to be added due to a lost or defective key, the ERASE ALL KEYS function has to be performed. Original 7 keys plus additional new key may then be reprogrammed into SKIM.
- PROGRAMMING NOT ATTEMPTED is displayed after an ERASE ALL KEYS function is executed.
- PROGRAMMING KEY FAILED is displayed if further diagnosis is required.
To program additional keys, turn ignition off. Remove current programmed key and insert next new blank key. Turn ignition on. Reenter SECURED ACCESS mode function and repeat PROGRAM NEW KEY procedure.
PRETEST INSPECTION
| CAUTION | Always turn ignition off before disconnecting any control module connectors. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Note. Do not use a test light in place of a voltmeter unless instructed to do so. Always disconnect scan tool before charging battery. Always perform appropriate verification test after repairs are made. See VERIFICATION TESTS .
Verify customer complaint. Check all system fuses. Check for loose accessory drive belt. Check all fluid levels. Check components for visible damage. Check components for loose/poor connections, corrosion and backed-out terminals. Check battery condition and battery terminals. Ensure charging system is operating properly. Check for damaged wiring. Check ground connections. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Correct any obvious problems before continuing with testing. If no problems exist, go to SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .
SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
Note. Self-diagnostic tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII) scan tool. A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.
- Perform pretest inspection. See «PRETEST INSPECTION»(ref-151757-S23173714162003020300000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If pretest inspection procedure has been performed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with all modules. If communication is established with all modules, go to next step. If communication is not established with any module, perform appropriate test under «COMMUNICATIONS»(ref-151757-S14416863212003020300000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
- Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. Do not clear DTCs until repairs are complete. If any DTCs exist, perform corresponding DTC tests under affected system under SYSTEM TESTS. If no DTCs exist, repair by corresponding symptom tests under affected system under «SYSTEM TESTS»(ref-151757-S17936774392003020300000). SYMPTOM INDEX
AIR BAG VERIFICATION TEST
| CAUTION | Always turn ignition off before disconnecting or connecting any control module connectors, except Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC). Failure to do so could result in damage to control module. |
- Remove all test equipment and jumper wires. Connect any disconnected components, except battery. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on, then connect negative battery cable.
- Using scan tool, erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. Turn ignition off and wait 15 seconds. Turn ignition on and wait one minute. Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If no DTCs exist and customers complaint cannot be duplicated, system is operating correctly and repair is complete. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-151757-S31716700552003020300000) table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs exist but symptom still exists, return to «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-151757-S31716700552003020300000) table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM and repair by symptom.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST

- Turn ignition off. Remove all test equipment and jumper wires. Connect any disconnected components. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. Turn ignition off. Wait 15 seconds. Start engine and allow to run for 2 minutes. Operate system that set DTC. Turn ignition off. Wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, or if no DTCs exist but symptom still exists, perform appropriate test. - Test drive vehicle for at least 5 minutes and perform several anti-lock braking stops. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs from all modules. If no DTCs exist, and customers complaint cannot be duplicated, system is operating correctly and repair is complete. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. If any DTCs exist or if no DTCs exist but symptom still exists, perform appropriate test. BODY VERIFICATION TEST

Note. Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) will only remain in secured access mode for 60 seconds. If incorrect unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) is entered 3 times, SKIM will be locked for one hour. To unlock SKIM, turn ignition on for one hour. When SKIM is locked, scan tool will display BUS +/- SIGNALS OPEN.
Note. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or SKIM was replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) Module and Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC).
- Turn ignition off. Remove all test equipment and jumper wires. Connect any disconnected components. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) If Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module was replaced, go to next step. If SKIM and/or PCM were replaced, go to step 3.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, VTSS, MISCELLANEOUS, then CONFIGURE MODULE. If vehicle is equipped with Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS), use scan tool to enable VTSS. Using scan tool, program all other options and transmitters as necessary. Go to step 6.
- Obtain vehicles unique PIN assigned to SKIM from vehicle owner or manufacturer. If SKIM was replaced, go to next step. If PCM was replaced, go to step 5.
- Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then SKIM MODULE REPLACED. Enter 4-digit PIN to put SKIM in access mode. Follow prompts on scan tool to enter country code, enter VIN and transfer vehicle secret key data from PCM. Using scan tool, program all keys to be used with vehicle. Go to step 6.
- Enter 4-digit PIN to put SKIM in access mode. Using scan tool, transfer vehicle secret key data to from SKIM to PCM. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Ensure all accessories are off and battery is fully charged. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. Start engine and let idle for 2 minutes. Operate system that was malfunctioning. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If no DTCs exist and customers complaint cannot be duplicated, system is operating correctly and repair is complete. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. If any DTCs exist or if no DTCs exist but symptom still exists, perform appropriate test. POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST

Note. Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) will only remain in secured access mode for 60 seconds. If incorrect unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) is entered 3 times, SKIM will be locked for one hour. To unlock SKIM, turn ignition on for one hour. When SKIM is locked, scan tool will display BUS +/- SIGNALS OPEN.
Note. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was replaced, the correct vehicle mileage and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be programmed into the PCM to prevent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from being set in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module and Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC).
- Turn ignition off. Remove all test equipment and jumper wires. Ensure all engine components are properly installed. Connect any disconnected components. Inspect engine oil for contamination and change oil and filter if necessary. If PCM has been replaced, go to next step. If PCM has not been replaced, go to step 5.
- Obtain vehicles unique PIN assigned to SKIM from vehicle owner or manufacturer. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on. Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then SKIM MODULE REPLACED. Enter 4-digit PIN to put SKIM in access mode. Follow prompts on scan tool to enter correct VIN and mileage into PCM. Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from ABS control module and ORC. Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then SKIM MODULE REPLACED. Enter 4-digit PIN to put SKIM in access mode. Using scan tool, select UPDATE THE SECRET KEY DATA. Data will be transferred from SKIM to PCM. Go to next step.
- Attempt to start vehicle. If vehicle starts and stays running, go to next step. If vehicle does not start or stay running, repair by symptom. See «TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - CARS - EXCEPT SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE»(ref-142307) article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition off. Wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs from all modules. If no DTCs exist and customers complaint cannot be duplicated, system is operating correctly and repair is complete. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. If no DTCs exist, but symptom still exists, perform appropriate test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-151757-S31716700552003020300000) table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM and repair by symptom.
SKIS VERIFICATION TEST

- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. (Схема №2) Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select SKIM MODULE REPLACEMENT. Enter 4-digit PIN to put SKIM in access mode. Go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select BODY, THEFT ALARM, SKIM, MISCELLANEOUS, then select desired procedure and follow steps displayed on scan tool. If SKIM has been replaced, ensure all keys and remote transmitters to be used with vehicle are programmed into SKIM. See «SENTRY KEYS»(ref-151757-S30310905942003020300000) and «REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY TRANSMITTER»(ref-151757-S26164238552003020300000) under PROGRAMMING. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Wait 5 seconds. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from all modules. If no DTCs exist and customers complaint cannot be duplicated, system is operating correctly and repair is complete. If any DTCs exist, perform appropriate test. If no DTCs exist, but symptom still exists, perform appropriate test. See «SYMPTOM INDEX»(ref-151757-S31716700552003020300000) table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM and repair by symptom.
VTSS VERIFICATION TEST

Close all doors and trunk. Open driver's door. Remove ignition key. Using Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter, lock doors. Close driver's door. If VTSS indicator flashes rapidly for 15 seconds, then flashes slowly, system is operating properly. If indicator does not operate as specified, diagnose and repair problem. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
