Restraints - Service Information: Removal & Installation Dodge Dart PF

REMOVAL

WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury during and following any seat belt or child restraint anchor service, carefully inspect all seat belts, buckles, mounting hardware, retractors, tether straps, and anchors for proper installation, operation, or damage. Replace any belt that is cut, frayed, or torn. Straighten any belt that is twisted. Tighten any loose fasteners. Replace any belt that has a damaged or ineffective buckle or retractor. Replace any belt that has a bent or damaged latch plate or anchor plate. Replace any child restraint anchor or the unit to which the anchor is integral that has been bent or damaged. Never attempt to repair a seat belt or child restraint component. Always replace damaged or ineffective seat belt and child restraint components with the correct, new and unused replacement parts listed in the Chrysler Mopar® Parts Catalog.

  1. Remove the upper trim (6) from the inside of the B-pillar (1). Refer to «PANEL, B-PILLAR TRIM, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S25624012882014072800000) .
  2. Remove the nut (4) that secures the seat belt turning loop (5) to the stud on the height adjuster (2).
  3. Remove the seat belt turning loop from the height adjuster.
  4. Remove the two screws (3) that secure the height adjuster to the upper inner B-pillar.
  5. Remove the seat belt turning loop adjuster from the B-pillar.

INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury during and following any seat belt or child restraint anchor service, carefully inspect all seat belts, buckles, mounting hardware, retractors, tether straps, and anchors for proper installation, operation, or damage. Replace any belt that is cut, frayed, or torn. Straighten any belt that is twisted. Tighten any loose fasteners. Replace any belt that has a damaged or ineffective buckle or retractor. Replace any belt that has a bent or damaged latch plate or anchor plate. Replace any child restraint anchor or the unit to which the anchor is integral that has been bent or damaged. Never attempt to repair a seat belt or child restraint component. Always replace damaged or ineffective seat belt and child restraint components with the correct, new and unused replacement parts listed in the Chrysler Mopar® Parts Catalog.
  1. Position the seat belt turning loop height adjuster (2) to the inside of the upper inner B-pillar (1).
  2. Install and tighten the two screws (3) that secure the adjuster to the B-pillar. Tighten the screws to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
  3. Position the seat belt turning loop (5) onto the stud of the height adjuster on the B-pillar. Be certain that the seat belt webbing between the retractor and the turning loop is not twisted.
  4. Install and tighten the nut (4) that secures the turning loop to the height adjuster. Tighten the nut to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
  5. Reinstall the upper trim (6) onto the inside of the B-pillar. Refer to «PANEL, B-PILLAR TRIM, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S12039899802014072800000) .

Scheme 2: DESCRIPTION

The injection molded, thermoplastic Driver AirBag (DAB) protective trim cover (1) is the most visible part of the DAB. The DAB is located in the center of the steering wheel, where it is secured with screws to the floating horn switch within the hub cavity of the three-spoke steering wheel. An injection molded, bright Dodge emblem (2) is applied to the center of the trim cover.

Concealed beneath the DAB trim cover (1) are the folded airbag cushion, the tether cutter (2) the airbag housing (3), the airbag inflator (4) and the retainers (6) that secure the inflator to the housing. The airbag cushion, housing and inflator are secured within an integral receptacle molded into the back of the trim cover. The vertical walls of this receptacle have numerous integral window features that are engaged by numerous hook features that are bent outward around the perimeter of the DAB housing. The DAB housing also has four studs (5) which are used to secure the floating horn switch to the back of the housing. The floating horn switch plate also includes a mount for the DAB active vent flap tether cutter.

The DAB used in this vehicle is a multistage-type that complies with revised federal airbag standards to deploy with less force than those used in some prior vehicles. A radial deploying fabric airbag cushion with internal tethers and an active vent is used. The airbag inflator is a dual-initiator, non-azide, pyrotechnic-type unit and is secured to the stamped metal airbag housing using four flanged hex nuts. A non-azide, pyrotechnic-type tether cutter for the DAB active vent snaps onto a mount integral to the horn switch plate. Three keyed and color-coded connector receptacles on the two inflator initiators and the tether cutter are connected to the vehicle electrical system through three jacketed, two-wire pigtail harnesses from the clockspring.

The DAB cannot be repaired, and must be replaced if deployed, ineffective or in any way damaged. The DAB trim cover and the floating horn switch are available for individual service replacement.

WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag cushion and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

Note. The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged Driver AirBag (DAB). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the DAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
  2. Unsnap and move aside the screw cover (7) from the access hole on the back of each horizontal spoke of the rear trim cover on the steering wheel (4).
  3. Working through the access holes in each side of the steering wheel rear trim cover, remove the two screws (5) that secure the floating horn switch plate and Driver AirBag (DAB) unit (1) to the steering wheel armature.
  4. Pull the DAB and floating horn switch unit away from the steering wheel far enough to access the electrical connections at the back of the airbag housing and switch plate unit.
  5. Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector from the floating horn switch plate connector on the back of the switch plate. CAUTION: Do not pull on the clockspring pigtail wires or pry on the connector insulators to disengage them from the Driver AirBag (DAB) inflator initiator connector receptacles. Improper removal of these pigtail wires and their connector insulators can result in damage to the airbag circuits or the connector insulators.
  6. The clockspring DAB pigtail wire connector insulators (1) are secured by integral latches (3) and a Connector Position Assurance (CPA) lock (2) to the airbag tether cutter and inflator connector receptacles, which are located on the back of the floating horn switch plate and the DAB housing. Pull the lock straight out from the connector insulator, then pull the insulators straight out from the connector receptacles to disengage and disconnect them.
  7. Remove the DAB and floating horn switch plate from the steering wheel as a unit.
  8. If the DAB has been deployed, the clockspring and the steering column must also be replaced.
WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.
WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the Driver AirBag (DAB), or becoming entrapped between the DAB cushion and the DAB trim cover. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.

Note. The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged Driver AirBag (DAB). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to HANDLING NON-DEPLOYED SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINTS . If the DAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

  1. Position the Driver AirBag (DAB) (2) and floating horn switch plate unit (1) close enough to the steering wheel (4) to reconnect the electrical connections (2 and 6) at the back of the switch plate and airbag housing.
  2. Reconnect the wire connectors to the airbag inflator and tether cutter (3) connector receptacles by pressing straight in on the connector insulator. Be certain to engage each keyed and color-coded connector to the matching connector receptacle. You can be certain that each connector is fully engaged in its receptacle by listening carefully for a distinct, audible click as the connector latches snap into place.
  3. Push each of the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) locks firmly into the DAB connector insulator until it is flush with the upper surface of the insulator.
  4. Reconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector to the floating horn switch plate connector on the back of the switch plate.
  5. Carefully position the DAB and floating horn switch plate unit into the steering wheel hub while tugging lightly upward on the clockspring pigtail wires for the airbag and tucking the wires into the upper hub cavity of the steering wheel. Be certain that none of the steering wheel wiring is pinched between the airbag housing or the horn switch plate and the steering wheel armature.
  6. Working through the access holes in each side of the steering wheel rear trim cover, install and tighten the two screws (3) that secure the floating horn switch and DAB unit to the steering wheel armature. Tighten the screws to 13 N.m (10 ft. lbs.).
  7. Position and snap the screw cover back into place over the access hole on the back of each horizontal spoke of the rear trim cover on the steering wheel.
  8. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .

Scheme 6: DESCRIPTION

Dual Knee AirBags (KAB) (also known as Inflatable Knee Blockers/IKB) are used on this vehicle. These airbags are passive, inflatable Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components. Vehicles with this equipment may be readily identified by the SRS - AIRBAG logo located on the instrument panel steering column opening cover for the driver side and on the glove box door for the passenger side. The KAB units are concealed below the lower edge of the instrument panel, just beneath the steering column opening cover on the driver side or just beneath the glove box door on the passenger side.

The stamped metal airbag housing (1) is secured by four studs (4) with nuts to the stamped metal lower instrument panel reinforcement of the instrument panel support structure. A molded plastic protective cover (5) is secured over the folded airbag cushion by several hook formations stamped into the airbag housing that are engaged through window openings in tabs integral to the outer perimeter of the cover.

The airbag housing contains the airbag inflator and a heat shield. The airbag inflator is a single-initiator, non-azide hybrid-type unit that is secured to the housing by two studs (2) with nuts and sealed within the airbag housing. The airbags are connected to the vehicle electrical system through dedicated take outs and connector insulators of the instrument panel wire harness that connect directly to the inflator initiator (3) of each airbag.

The driver and passenger side KAB units are not interchangeable. The inflator initiators are on the opposite, inboard ends of the module housing and the mounting stud locations are offset to prevent each airbag unit from being installed in the improper location.

The KAB units cannot be repaired, and must be replaced if deployed, ineffective or in any way damaged. If the KAB units are deployed, the steering column opening cover and the glove box must also be replaced.

If the PAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
  2. Remove the glove box from the instrument panel. Refer to «GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S20609399852014072800000) .
  3. Reach through and above the glove box opening of the instrument panel to access and remove the two screws (4) that secure the Passenger AirBag (PAB) (1) lower mounting bracket to the instrument panel structural support (3).
  4. Still reaching through the glove box opening, disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the PAB pigtail wire harness connector (2).
  5. Remove the top pad (3) and PAB from the instrument panel as a unit. Refer to «PAD, INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S27457622572014072800000) .
  6. Place the top pad on a suitable work surface with the top facing down. If the top pad will be reused, be certain to take the proper precautions to prevent the top pad from receiving cosmetic damage during the following procedures.
  7. Disengage each of the hooks on one side of the PAB housing (2) from the windows in the forward or rearward vertical walls of the PAB retainer or chute (1) on the underside of the top pad. To disengage the hooks, use hand pressure to pull the adjacent edge of the PAB housing firmly and evenly upward out of the retainer receptacle, while at the same time pulling the upper edge of the receptacle wall outward far enough to disengage the hooks.
  8. With all of the hooks on one side of the PAB housing disengaged from the retainer, rotate that side of the housing upward far enough to disengage the hooks on the opposite side of the housing from the retainer.
  9. With all of the hooks disengaged, lift the PAB housing, inflator, and cushion as a unit from the receptacle of the PAB retainer or chute on the underside of the instrument panel top pad.

If the PAB has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to SERVICE AFTER A SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM DEPLOYMENT .

  1. Place the instrument panel top pad (3) on a suitable work surface with the Passenger AirBag (PAB) retainer or chute (1) receptacle facing up. Be certain to take the proper precautions to prevent the top pad from receiving cosmetic damage during the following procedures.
  2. Carefully position the PAB housing (2) to the PAB retainer or chute receptacle. The side of the PAB housing with 6 hooks faces rearward in the vehicle.
  3. Engage all of the hooks on one side of the PAB housing through the windows on the same side of the PAB retainer or chute, then rotate the opposite side of the PAB housing downward into the receptacle.
  4. Inspect around the perimeter of the PAB making certain each of the hooks on the PAB housing is fully engaged through the windows in the forward and rearward vertical walls of the PAB retainer or chute receptacle.
  5. Reinstall the top pad onto the instrument panel. Refer to «PAD, INSTRUMENT PANEL, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S02578787572014072800000) .
  6. Reach through and above the glove box opening of the instrument panel to install and tighten the two screws (4) that secure the PAB lower mounting bracket to the instrument panel structural support (3). Tighten the screws to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
  7. Still reaching through the glove box opening, reconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector to the PAB pigtail wire harness connector (2). Be certain that the connector is fully engaged and locked.
  8. Reinstall the glove box into the instrument panel. Refer to «GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S40332405592014072800000) .
  9. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .

Scheme 9: FRONT

The front Seat AirBags (SAB) (1) (also known as pelvic and thoracic airbags) are completely concealed beneath the seat back trim cover on the outboard sides of both front seat backs. Vehicles with this equipment can be readily identified by a sewn tag with the SRS - AIRBAG logo located on the outboard side of the front seat back trim cover. The folded SAB cushion is contained within a fabric wrap secured to the two airbag mounting studs. The airbag cushion is constructed of a coated nylon fabric. The airbags are inserted into a sewn pouch called an intensifier on the inside of the trim cover. The pouch is made of the same material as the airbag cushion.

The fabric wrap of the SAB also contains the airbag inflator and a heat shield. Two studs (3) are installed on the inflator within the fabric wrap and extend through the inboard side of the unit. The airbag is then secured to the seat back frame by nuts on the two studs. The SAB inflator is a single-initiator, pyrotechnic-type unit that is secured to and sealed within the SAB. The SAB is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated jumper wire harness with a connector insulator that connects directly to the inflator initiator (2). The connector insulator is uniquely keyed and color-coded to ensure that it can only be connected to the initiator.

The front SAB cannot be repaired, and must be replaced if deployed, ineffective or in any way damaged. If the front SAB is deployed, the seat back frame, the seat back foam cushion, the seat back trim cover and the SAB jumper wire harness must also be replaced.

Scheme 10: REAR

The available rear Seat AirBags (SAB) (also known as pelvic and thoracic airbags) are completely concealed within the lower outboard ends of the rear seat cushion beneath the rear seat cushion trim cover and sandwiched between the seat cushion foam and the plastic seat cushion pan. Vehicles with this equipment can be readily identified by a sewn tag with the SRS - AIRBAG logo located on the outboard side of the rear seat cushion trim cover. The rear SAB cushion is constructed of a coated nylon fabric. The folded SAB cushion is contained within and protected by a soft fabric wrap (2) that also serves as an intensifier. The wrap is made of the same material as the airbag cushion.

The open end of the SAB cushion is clamped over the outlet tube integral to the SAB inflator (3). A single screw (5) secures a bracket (4) on the inflator to the forward corner of the seat cushion pan, while a tether strap (1) secures the loose end of the SAB cushion to the rearward corner of the seat cushion pan. The SAB inflator is a single-initiator, hybrid-type unit. The SAB is connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector insulator of a rear seat cushion wire harness that connects directly to the inflator initiator. The connector insulators are uniquely keyed and color-coded to ensure they can only be connected to the initiator.

The rear SAB cannot be repaired, and must be replaced if deployed, ineffective or in any way damaged. If a rear SAB is deployed, the entire rear seat cushion pan, the seat cushion foam, the seat cushion trim cover and the rear seat cushion wire harness must also be replaced.

WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

Note. Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and be certain that the entire steering system is locked or inhibited from rotation.

  1. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  2. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery.
  3. Remove the Driver AirBag (DAB) from the steering wheel. Refer to «AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL»(ref-646225-S32009974912014072800000) .
  4. Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connectors from the upper clockspring connector receptacles.
  5. Remove the steering wheel from the upper steering column shaft. Refer to «WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL»(ref-646226-S30296315462014072800000) .
  6. If the removed clockspring is to be reused, be certain that the clockspring rotor is secured to the clockspring case to maintain clockspring centering until the steering wheel is reinstalled on the steering column. If clockspring centering is not maintained, the clockspring must be replaced with a new unit. Refer to «CLOCKSPRING, STANDARD PROCEDURE»(ref-646225-S28891055312014072800000) .
  7. Move the steering column to the fully lowered position and leave the tilt release lever in the released (down) position.
  8. Remove the upper and lower shrouds from the steering column. Refer to «SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, LOWER, REMOVAL»(ref-646226-S20871504862014072800000) «SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, REMOVAL»(ref-646226-S41147323602014072800000) .
  9. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connectors from the back of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) mounting housing (1).
  10. Release each of the four latch features (2) of the clockspring (4) from the latch tabs (6) on the outer circumference of the SCCM mounting housing.
  11. Carefully pull the clockspring away from the SCCM mounting housing far enough to disengage the interconnect terminal pins of the clockspring from the interconnect receptacle (5) of the SCCM mounting housing.
  12. Remove the clockspring from the steering column.
WARNINGTo avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

Note. Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position and be certain that the entire steering system is locked or inhibited from rotation.

  1. Carefully slide the clockspring (4) down over the steering column upper shaft far enough to align and engage the interconnect terminal pins of the clockspring with the interconnect receptacle (5) of the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) mounting housing (1).
  2. Press the clockspring onto the SCCM mounting housing until each of the four latch features (2) of the clockspring is engaged over the latch tabs (6) on the outer circumference of the SCCM mounting housing.
  3. Reconnect the instrument panel wire harness connectors to the back of the SCCM mounting housing.
  4. Reinstall the upper and lower shrouds onto the steering column. Refer to «SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, LOWER, INSTALLATION»(ref-646226-S36868550442014072800000) and «SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, UPPER, INSTALLATION»(ref-646226-S27702954282014072800000) .
  5. Move the steering column back to the fully raised position and move the tilt release lever back to the locked (up) position.
  6. If a new clockspring is being installed, remove (break off) the red locking tab (3) that secures the clockspring rotor to the clockspring case.
  7. Reinstall the steering wheel onto the upper steering column shaft. Be certain to align and insert the rotational lugs on the steering wheel hub into the slots in the hub of the clockspring. Also, the steering wheel fastener MUST be tightened to the proper torque specification to ensure proper clockspring operation. Refer to «WHEEL, STEERING, INSTALLATION»(ref-646226-S42772966442014072800000) .
  8. Reconnect the steering wheel wire harness connectors to the upper clockspring connector receptacles.
  9. Reinstall the Driver AirBag (DAB) onto the steering wheel. Refer to «AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL»(ref-646225-S32009974912014072800000) .
  10. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .

Scheme 12: DESCRIPTION

The passenger side front seat for this vehicle incorporates the Occupant Classification System (OCS). The OCS consists of a single factory-calibrated unit, which includes the following components

  1. Electronic Pressure Sensor - The electronic pressure sensor is integral and internal to the Occupant Classification Module (OCM). Only the hose nipple for the pressure hose is visible on the outside of the OCM housing. The remainder of the sensor and the sensor circuitry are concealed and protected within the molded black plastic OCM housing.
  2. Occupant Classification Module - The Occupant Classification Module (OCM) (3) is located beneath the front of the passenger front seat cushion. Concealed within a hollow in the center of the molded black plastic OCM housing is the electronic circuitry of the module. The module housing is sealed to enclose and protect the internal electronic circuitry. A connector receptacle integral to the front of the OCM housing contains terminal pins that connect the sensor to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the passenger front seat wire harness. A hose nipple formation is integral to the OCM housing. A slot integral to the top of the OCM housing snaps over a blade on a stamped metal bracket riveted to the inboard upper seat track on models with the base seat. On models with the optional storage seat, the OCM housing snaps over a blade on a molded plastic stanchion integral to the forward inboard underside of the seat cushion pan.
  3. Pressure Hose - Beneath the seat cushion a length of clear poly hose serves as the OCS pressure hose (4). The hose is securely clamped at one end to a hose nipple fitting that extends downward from the Seat Weight Sensor (SWS) (also known as the seat weight bladder), and at the opposite end to the hose nipple formation of the electronic pressure sensor integral to the outside of the OCM housing. The pressure sensor circuitry is internal and integral to the OCM. The pressure hose is filled with the same silicone fluid that fills the SWS.
  4. Seat Cushion Foam - The passenger front seat cushion foam (1) is an integral part of the factory-calibrated OCS. There are two unique foam configurations: one for the standard passenger front seat and another for the optional storage front seat. The storage front seat includes a small storage bin which is accessed by lifting the center insert of the seat cushion.
  5. Seat Weight Sensor - The Seat Weight Sensor (SWS) (also known as the seat weight bladder) is sandwiched between the seat cushion springs and the seat cushion foam. A heavy jute-like insulator pad (2) is installed between the lower surface of the bladder (5) and the seat cushion pan and springs. The bladder and pad are secured near the forward end to the seat cushion pan by two plastic push-in fasteners. There are two unique bladder configurations: one for the standard passenger front seat and another for the optional storage front seat. The storage front seat includes a small storage bin which is accessed by lifting the center insert of the seat cushion. The bladder consists of two sheets of an elastomeric material and a molded plastic hose nipple fitting. The two sheets of elastomeric material are sealed together around their perimeter and joined at numerous specific intervals within their field. The hose nipple fitting is sealed to a small round hole in the lower surface of the bladder and is pointed downward where it passes through a clearance hole in the insulator pad and extends to just below the seat cushion springs. The bladder is filled with a silicone fluid to become a pliable, quilted, resistive mat and is connected to a pressure hose that connects it to the electronic pressure sensor within the OCM unit.

All of the components that make up the OCS are a factory-calibrated and assembled unit. The OCS components cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if damaged or ineffective, they must be replaced as a calibrated unit. Any time the OCS is removed or replaced for any reason, the new OCS data must be configured within the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) using a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative cable from the battery. Wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before further service.
  2. Remove the passenger front seat from the vehicle. Refer to «SEAT, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S34201988782014072800000) .
  3. Disconnect the seat wire harness connector (1) from the Occupant Classification Module (OCM) (4) beneath the inboard front corner of the seat cushion pan.
  4. Using a small flat-bladed screwdriver or a small pick tool, carefully pry the latch tab integral to the OCM mount to release it from the blade (2) of the mounting bracket (base seat) or stanchion (3) (storage seat) beneath the inboard front corner of the seat cushion.
  5. Remove the trim cover from the passenger front seat cushion. Refer to «COVER, SEAT CUSHION, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S31178245912014072800000) «COVER, SEAT CUSHION, REMOVAL»(ref-646233-S29213717492014072800000) .
  6. Remove the foam (1) from the seat cushion.
  7. Remove the two push-in plastic fasteners that secure the Seat Weight Sensor (SWS) (also known as the seat weight bladder) and the jute-like SWS pad (2) to the seat cushion pan (3).
  8. Remove the SWS, the pad, the pressure hose and the OCM with integral electronic pressure sensor from above the front seat cushion as a unit.
  9. If any of the OCS components requires replacement, discard the entire OCS unit. Replace it with the entire contents of the factory-calibrated service replacement package, which includes an OCM with integral and internal electronic pressure sensor, a pressure hose, the SWS, the jute-like SWS pad and the seat cushion foam.

  1. Position the Seat Weight Sensor (SWS) (also known as the seat weight bladder), the jute-like SWS pad (2), the Occupant Classification System (OCS) pressure hose and the Occupant Classification Module (OCM) with integral electronic pressure sensor to the top of the front seat cushion as a unit. Lift the back of the SWS and pad far enough to access and insert the OCM and pressure hose between the seat cushion springs to the underside of the seat cushion. Be certain the pressure hose is not pinched or kinked.
  2. Install the two push-in plastic fasteners that secure the SWS and jute-like pad to the seat cushion pan (3).
  3. Position the foam (1) onto the seat cushion.
  4. Reinstall the trim cover onto the passenger front seat cushion. Refer to «COVER, SEAT CUSHION, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S05876111432014072800000) and «COVER, SEAT CUSHION, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S20037466152014072800000) .
  5. From the underside of the seat cushion, snap the OCM (4) onto the blade (2) of the mounting bracket (base seat) or stanchion (3) (storage seat) beneath the inboard front corner of the seat cushion. Route the pressure hose away from sharp or moving objects and be certain the hose is not kinked.
  6. Reconnect the seat wire harness connector (1) to the OCM beneath the inboard front corner of the seat cushion.
  7. Reinstall the passenger front seat into the vehicle. Refer to «SEAT, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S01287013532014072800000) .
  8. If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, a diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to align the PROXI configuration data into the new ECU. Follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.
  9. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .
  10. Following successful completion of the SRS Verification Test procedure, perform the OCM System Verification Test procedure found in the diagnostic scan tool under Miscellaneous Functions. Refer to the appropriate diagnostic procedures.

The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) (1) is secured by three nuts to three studs on the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel near the dash panel and beneath the instrument panel forward of the center stack in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Concealed within a hollow in the center of the molded black plastic ORC housing is the electronic circuitry of the ORC which includes a microcontroller, an electronic impact sensor, an electronic safing sensor and an energy storage capacitor. A stamped metal cover plate is secured to the bottom of the ORC housing to enclose and protect the internal electronic circuitry and components.

An arrow (2) printed on the label on the top of the ORC housing provides a visual verification of the proper orientation of the unit, and should always be pointed toward the front of the vehicle. The ORC housing has integral mounting flanges (4) on the right and left front and the right rear corners. Two molded plastic electrical connector receptacles (3) exit the rearward facing side of the ORC housing. These receptacles connect the ORC to the vehicle electrical system through two dedicated take outs and connectors, one from the instrument panel wire harness and the second from the body wire harness.

The impact sensor and safing sensor internal to the ORC are calibrated for the specific vehicle, and are only serviced as a unit with the ORC. In addition, there are unique versions of the ORC for vehicles with or without certain optional Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) components. The ORC cannot be repaired or adjusted and, if damaged or ineffective, it must be replaced.

Working from the driver side front floor panel, reach around the forward edge of the instrument panel center stack support on the floor panel transmission tunnel (5) to access, unlatch and disconnect the body wire harness connector (4) from the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) (2) connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. To disconnect the wire harness connector from the ORC, depress the release tab and lift the lever arm on the connector.
  4. Still on the driver side, remove the nut (1) that secures the left front mount of the ORC to the stud on the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel.
  5. Working from the passenger side front floor panel, reach around the forward edge of the instrument panel center stack support on the floor panel transmission tunnel to access, unlatch and disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector (3) from the ORC connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. To disconnect the wire harness connector from the ORC, depress the release tab and lift the lever arm on the connector.
  6. Still on the passenger side, remove the two nuts (1) that secure the right front and rear mounts of the ORC to the studs on the top of the floor panel transmission tunnel.
  7. Remove the ORC from the vehicle.

When the ORC is correctly positioned, the bottom of the housing will fit flush with the floor and the orientation arrow on the label on top of the housing will be pointed forward in the vehicle.
  2. Working from the passenger side front floor panel, reach around the forward edge of the instrument panel center stack support on the floor panel transmission tunnel to install and tighten the two nuts (1) that secure the ORC to the studs on the floor panel transmission tunnel. Tighten the nuts to 8 N.m (71 in. lbs.).
  3. Still on the passenger side, reconnect and latch the instrument panel wire harness connector (3) to the ORC connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. Be certain that the latch on the connector is fully engaged.
  4. Working from the driver side front floor panel, reach around the forward edge of the instrument panel center stack support on the floor panel transmission tunnel to install and tighten the nut (1) that secures the ORC to the stud on the floor panel transmission tunnel. Tighten the nut to 8 N.m (71 in. lbs.).
  5. Still on the driver side, reconnect and latch the body wire harness connector (4) to the ORC connector receptacle located on the rearward facing side of the module. Be certain that the latch on the connector is fully engaged.
  6. Reinstall the front side panels onto the center floor console on both the right and left sides of the floor panel transmission tunnel. Refer to «CONSOLE, FLOOR, INSTALLATION»(ref-646233-S38396556062014072800000) .
  7. If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, a diagnostic scan tool MUST be used to align the PROXI configuration data into the new ECU. Follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.
  8. If this Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is being replaced with a new unit, the Initialize ORC Miscellaneous Function must be run using a diagnostic scan tool.
  9. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .

Active Head Restraint (AHR) units (1) are standard equipment for both front seating positions in this vehicle. One inertia-activated AHR unit is located atop each front seat back. Outwardly, an inertia-activated AHR appears the same as a non-active head restraint. The mechanical components (2) that articulate the inertia-activated AHR headrest pad are all concealed within the front seat back frame assembly.

At the top of the seat back frame are two stamped steel headrest guide tubes. The guide tubes are each inserted through a molded plastic fulcrum bushing installed in the upper seat back frame member and are permanently fixed to a movable stamped steel armature bracket located just below the upper frame member near the top of the seat back. The armature bracket is secured to a stamped steel pivot link at each side that pivots on a screw threaded into a mounting bracket welded to each side member of the seat back frame.

The pivot links are each have a spring attached to a lever opposite the armature bracket attachment that is anchored to the seat back frame side member below, which provides the spring-loaded return action of the inertia mechanism. The upper end of the static lumbar assembly is secured at each side to the base of the armature bracket. Each side of the lower end of the lumbar assembly is engaged in a ramp bracket riveted to the lower seat back frame member.

The inertia-activated AHR linkage cannot be repaired. If damaged or ineffective, it must be replaced as a unit with a new seat back frame assembly.

  2. Reach under the rear edge of the front seat cushion to access the Seat Track Position Sensor (STPS) (2) on a bracket (1) located on the inboard side near the rear of one of the upper seat tracks (4).
  3. Using a small screwdriver, hold the latch feature (3) depressed while sliding the connector end of the STPS off of the bracket.
  4. Disconnect the seat wire harness connector (5) from the STPS connector receptacle.
  5. Remove the STPS from under the front seat.

  1. Reach under the rear edge of the front seat cushion to reconnect the seat wire harness connector (5) to the Seat Track Position Sensor (STPS) (2) connector receptacle. Be certain that the latch on the connector is fully engaged.
  2. Align the open end of the STPS mounting slot to the blade of the STPS bracket (1) located on the inboard side near the rear of one of the upper seat tracks (4).
  3. Push the STPS firmly onto the bracket until the latch feature (3) snaps into place with an audible click.
  4. Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST»(ref-646225-S19649039012014072800000) .

Scheme 19: DESCRIPTION

Both the driver and passenger front seat belt switches for this vehicle are actually Hall Effect-type sensors. These sensors consist of a fixed-position, Hall Effect Integrated Circuit (IC) chip and a small permanent magnet that are integral to the front seat belt buckles (1). The front seat belt buckles are located on a molded plastic scabbard and secured by a screw to a bracket near the back of the upper, inboard seat adjuster track. The front seat belt switches are connected to the vehicle electrical system through a two-lead pigtail wire and connector (2) on the front seat belt buckle-half, which is connected to a wire harness connector and take out of the seat wire harness. A one kilohm diagnostic resistor is connected in parallel with the IC where the two pigtail wire leads connect to the IC pins.

The front seat belt switches cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, the entire front seat belt buckle-half unit must be replaced.
