PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

CAUTIONAlways turn ignition off before disconnecting any control module connectors. Failure to do so could result in damage to control module. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Verify customer complaint. Check all system fuses. Check for loose accessory drive belt. Check all fluid levels. Check components for visible damage. Check components for loose/poor connections, corrosion and backed-out terminals. Check battery condition and battery terminals. Ensure charging system is operating properly. Check for damaged wiring. Check ground connections. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS. Correct any obvious problems before continuing with testing. If no problems exist, go to SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM .

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM

Note. For connector terminal identification, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS . For wiring identification, see WIRING DIAGRAMS .

Note. Self-diagnostic tests are written specifically for Chrysler's Diagnostic Readout Box (DRBIII®) scan tool. A generic scan tool may not be capable of performing all necessary test functions.

RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES

  1. Perform visual inspection and ensure battery is fully charged before proceeding. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is a 16-pin connector located under left side of dash, to left of steering wheel. Turn ignition on. If scan tool display is not blank, go to next step. If scan tool display is blank, go to «COMMUNICATIONS»(ref-34573-S31633498492001010900000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Using scan tool, select SYSTEM MONITORS, then CCD BUS TEST. Scan tool will perform a CCD bus test. If scan tool displays BUS OPERATIONAL, go to next step. If scan tool displays any message except BUS OPERATIONAL, go to «COMMUNICATIONS»(ref-34573-S31633498492001010900000) under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Using scan tool, select READ DTCs. If any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) are present, go to appropriate DTC. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-34573-S18023964172001010900000) table. If no DTCs are present, diagnose by symptom. See «SYMPTOM IDENTIFICATION»(ref-34573-S42161417312001011700000) table. Problems listed are diagnosed using a scan tool. These problems may occur separately or in various combinations. When diagnosing a system with many apparent problems, a sequence of tests may be required. After repairs, recheck system.
