Communication Interface Module Replacement
| IMPORTANT | The communication interface module (CIM) has a specific set of unique numbers that tie the module to a specific vehicle. These numbers, a 10-digit station identification (STID), and an 11-digit electronic serial number (ESN) or an 18 digit manufacturers electronic ID (MEID), are used by OnStar® and the cellular network to identify the specific vehicle. Because these numbers are exclusive to the vehicle identification number of the vehicle, these parts should NOT be exchanged with those of another vehicle. After replacing the CIM, it is essential to reconfigure the OnStar® system. Failure to reconfigure the system will result in an additional customer visit for repair. DO NOT press and hold the white dot button on the keypad as it will not reset this version of the OnStar® system and may result in a DTC to be set, a red LED and limited or incomplete OnStar® services. Use of the TIS 2 Web SPS application and the Tech 2 are required in order to perform the CIM configuration and setup procedure for this vehicle. The configuration and set-up procedure is now a two step process which enables an automated activation by the OnStar Center, without a button press by the technician to the center. It may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the TIS 2 Web and Tech 2 setup procedures. Perform the OnStar® Activation procedure only once. Repeat attempts at performing the procedure may result in a delay of the activation process. The Tech 2 setup procedure must begin immediately upon completion of programming. Any delay between the procedures may result in incomplete setup or activation of the CIM. |
- Connect the Tech 2 to the vehicle.
- Connect the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal to the Tech 2.
- Select the OnStar® Activation programming option using the service programming system (SPS).
- Upon completion of the OnStar® Activation programming event, disconnect the TIS terminal from the Tech 2 and perform the CIM/OnStar Set-up Procedure using the Tech 2.
- The default language for the new CIM is English. Changing the language capability to French or Spanish is supported by service programming system (SPS) and by Tech 2 special functions. Changing the language capability is also dependent on the generation of the replacement OnStar module.
Inform the customer that it may take up to 24 hours for the OnStar® service to become fully activated after performing the TIS 2 Web and Tech 2 setup procedures.
EBCM Replacement
If the electronic brake control module (EBCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- EBCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-338152-S36851889652009081700000) .
- Recalibrate the brake pedal position (BPP) sensor (Without JL7). Refer to «Brake Pedal Position Sensor Replacement»(ref-338126-S35799642972009081700000) .
- Recalibrate the steering angle position sensor (Without JL7). Refer to «Steering Angle Sensor Centering»(ref-338158-S23077143822009081700000) .
- Recalibrate the yaw rate sensor (Without JL7).
Electronic Suspension Control Module (ESCM) Replacement/Reprogramming
If the electronic suspension control module (ESCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- ESCM programming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-338152-S36851889652009081700000) .
- Revise the trim set calibration using the scan tool ALC Trimset Special Function. Refer to «Suspension Position Calibration»(ref-338132-S27822599892009081700000) .
ECM Replacement
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-338152-S36851889652009081700000) .
- Idle Learn Procedure-Refer to «Throttle Learn»(ref-338169-S19539185092009081700000) .
- Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Immobilizer System Component Programming»(ref-338179-S06686803632009081700000) . The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
- Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
Setup for Component Replacement
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
If any of the following components are replaced, an Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle Learn .
- Throttle body assembly
- ECM
If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed
- The ECM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-338152-S36851889652009081700000) .
- The CKP System Variation Learn-Refer to «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(ref-338172-S14948253622009081700000) .
- Theft Deterrent-Refer to «Immobilizer System Component Programming»(ref-338179-S06686803632009081700000) .
The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.
If any of the following components are replaced, a Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn must be performed.
- Engine replacement
- Any engine repair that disturbs the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor or its relationship with the crankshaft reluctor wheel
- CKP sensor
HVAC Control Module Replacement
If the HVAC manual or HVAC automatic control modules are replaced, an automatic re-calibration of all the actuators will occur. For the best re-calibration results, start and run the engine for at least one minute after installing the new module. Do not adjust any controls on the HVAC control module during the re-calibration procedure. If interrupted, improper HVAC performance may result. No additional procedures are necessary.
Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Replacement and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
If the power steering control module (PSCM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed in the following order
- PSCM Reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-338152-S36851889652009081700000) .
- Revise the new actuator setup procedure using the Scan Tool setup function.
- Revise the actuator removal procedure using the Scan Tool setup function.
- Revise the steering angle position sensor procedure using the Scan Tool setup function.
