DESCRIPTION

Electrochromatic day/night rearview mirror automatically changes reflectance to reduce glare from headlights. At night, as glare of headlights from behind increases, mirror will gradually become darker to absorb glare. During daylight or when gearshift lever is in Reverse, mirror will be clear and fully reflective. On some models, driver's side outside mirror will also be an electrochromatic day/night mirror that is controlled by inside mirror. On some models, inside rearview mirrors also include a compass.

OPERATION

Day/night mirror(s) use a thin layer of electrochromatic material between 2 plates of conductive glass. Two photocell sensors signal levels of light to a logic circuit. A forward-facing photocell sensor measures ambient light levels. A rear-facing photocell sensor measures glare from approaching vehicle headlights. When logic circuit senses more light from the headlight sensor than the ambient light sensor, the electrochromatic drive circuit applies voltage to mirror(s). Approximately 1.15 volts is applied to mirror(s) when a large amount of glare is present, causing mirror(s) to darken. Voltage will be reduced to 0.01 volt when both photocells indicate the same light level.

When gearshift lever is shifted into Reverse, battery voltage is applied to mirror reset terminal. Mirror will gradually change to a clear state for better vision when backing up.

Calibration (Aurora, DeVille, Eighty Eight, Eldorado, LeSabre, LSS, Riviera, Seville, Sierra & Silverado)

If after 2 seconds, compass does not show a direction, check for possible magnetic interference (magnetic antenna mount, etc.). If the letter "C" appears in compass window, mirror needs calibration. Mirror can be calibrated in one of 2 ways, either by driving in circles at 5 MPH (8 km/h) or less until display reads a direction, or driving an every day routine.

Calibration (Bonneville)

Press and hold MODE button until CALIBRATE light appears. Release MODE button. Heading display will start to rotate. Drive in small circles at 10 MPH (16 km/h) or less until CALIBRATE light goes out (approximately 1-5 circles). Compass is calibrated when direction bars are on and CALIBRATE light is off.

Variance (Aurora, DeVille, Eighty Eight, Eldorado, LeSabre, LSS & Riviera)

Determine correct zone location. (Scheme 1) Press and hold COMPASS button on bottom of mirror until a zone number appears in display. Continue holding COMPASS button until correct zone appears. Release COMPASS button. Compass heading will appear within a few seconds.

Press and hold calibration switch (approximately 5 seconds) until a zone number appears in display. In order to change current zone setting, press and hold calibration switch until correct zone appears. Release switch. Compass heading will appear within a few seconds. AUTOMATIC DAY/NIGHT MIRROR SYSTEM CHECK

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Move gearshift lever into Park. Move mirror switch to MAXIMUM, ON or MIRROR position, if necessary. Cover ambient light sensor (windshield side of mirror) with a dark cloth. Shine light on headlight sensor (on mirror side). Mirror should gradually darken.
  2. Move gearshift lever into Reverse. Mirror should gradually lighten to a clear state. Move gearshift lever into Park. Mirror should gradually darken. Remove cloth and light. Mirror should gradually lighten to a clear state. If vehicle is equipped with compass, turn on compass. Compass direction display should be on. If mirror does not operate as specified, go to «SYSTEM TESTS»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/mirrors/#auto-dimming-morror__system-tests) .

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGElectrochromatic material may irritate eyes and skin. In case of eye contact, rinse thoroughly with water. In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If material is ingested, consult a physician or poison control center immediately.

Note. Electrochromatic mirror cannot be repaired, and must be replaced as an assembly. DO NOT use ammonia-based cleansers on electrochromatic day/night mirrors. Spraying cleansers directly on mirrors is not recommended.

Note. For removal and installation procedure for outside mirror assemblies, see appropriate POWER MIRRORS article.

REARVIEW MIRROR

Note. It is not necessary to use tools or other objects to pry mirror mount or mirror away from windshield. Use of tools may damage mirror, mirror mount or windshield.

Removal & Installation (Catera)

Note. Mirror cover cannot be removed from mirror until mirror is removed from windshield support.

  1. Rock mirror from side to side, and pull mirror down firmly. DO NOT pull rearward on mirror, or mirror support or windshield may be damaged. Disconnect electrical connector. Remove inside mirror support. Unsnap mirror base cover.
  2. Install base cover. Connect mirror electrical connector. Center bottom of mirror to lower part of support. Rock mirror from side to side while pushing upward firmly. When mirror is fully seated, a click should be heard.

Removal & Installation (Century, Grand Prix & Regal)

Remove wiring harness cover from lighted rearview mirror, if equipped. Using small flat-blade tool, remove rearview mirror from support. Disconnect electrical connector, if equipped. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal (Aurora, Bonneville, DeVille, Eighty Eight, Eldorado, LeSabre, LSS, Park Avenue, Riviera & Seville)

Disconnect electrical connector from mirror. Adjust mirror to full DOWN position. Grasp mirror with both hands at top. Rotate mirror in downward-rearward motion to remove from mounting button.

Installation

  1. Install center bottom of mirror mount against windshield at top of mounting button. Slide mount onto mounting button, keeping mount parallel to windshield. Apply downward force against mounting button as mount begins to grip button. An audible click will be heard when installation is complete. Adjust mirror in a side-to-side and up and down motion to ensure mirror is securely attached. Reconnect electrical connector.
  2. Move sensitivity switch lever to MAX position. Turn ignition off. In a low ambient light condition, OFF/M/C/M should be illuminated. If OFF/M/C/M is not illuminated, inspect connectors and/or wiring.
  3. On electrochromatic mirror, cover forward facing sensor on right rear of mirror back with black cloth. Hold cloth over sensor until glass starts to darken to non-reflective stage. Remove cloth. Mirror should return to clear reflective stage. Repeat procedure several times to ensure mirror operates correctly.

Removal & Installation (Sierra & Silverado)

Use flat-bladed tool to remove wire cover from mirror. Disconnect electrical connector. Loosen set screw and slide mirror off of support. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mirror set screw to 18 INCH lbs. (2 N.m).
