Wiper System and Washer System Cadillac DeVille Concours I final

Wiper/washer Systems 4 illustrations ~5239 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

CAUTIONTo prevent scratching, wet the windshield before turning on wipers.

System uses a 2-speed wiper motor. A washer motor is attached to the washer fluid reservoir. A circuit board on the wiper motor cover controls power to the washer motor. (Scheme 1)

On vehicles with pulse (intermittent) system, if wiper switch is in DELAY position, a time delay occurs between wiping sweeps (on vehicles with variable delay, time delay may vary between wiper sweeps). The circuit board on the wiper motor cover controls the delay function.

Some vehicles may be equipped with a RAINSENSE(R) wiper system. System automatically operates wipers when moisture is sensed on windshield by RAINSENSE(R) module. System operates only when wiper switch is in one of the AUTO DELAY positions. Speed and duration of wipers is controlled electronically by RAINSENSE(R) module and wiper motor cover. RAINSENSE(R) module is mounted on passenger interior side of front windshield near rearview mirror.

COMPONENT LOCATIONS

WIPER ARMS

  1. Park position distance between upper edge of each wiper arm and bottom of parking ramp should be 1" (25.4 mm) below stop surface of park ramp. Move wipers to outer wipe position (top of sweep). Distance between left wiper arm and vertical edge of windshield should be 3 1/16" (78 mm) maximum.
  2. While wipers are operating, wiping pattern of right blade should overlap wiping pattern of left blade. If wiper arms are not positioned as specified, remove and reposition wiper arms.

Without RAINSENSE(R)

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Press wiper switch to ON. Wipers should operate at low speed. Washer should spray as long as washer switch is held in ON position. After releasing switch, washer stops and wipers return to park position after 2-4 sweeps.
  2. Set wiper switch to DELAY (pulse mode). Wipers should make one complete sweep, pause for 1-22 seconds before making next sweep. Pause time is determined by delay range position.
  3. Set wiper switch to DELAY (pulse mode). Press washer switch ON. Washer should spray as long as washer switch is held ON. Wipers run at low speed while spraying, and continue for 2-4 sweeps after washer switch is released. Wipers then return to pulse operation.
  4. Set wiper switch to LOW position. Wipers run continuously at low speed. Set wiper switch to HIGH position. Wipers run at faster speed. Set wiper switch to OFF position. Wipers return to park position at low speed.
  5. Set wiper switch to MIST position. Wipers make one complete sweep, then return to park position. If wiper system does not function properly, perform «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system__preliminary-inspection) .

With RAINSENSE(R)

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Press washer switch on for less than one second. Washer should spray and continue to spray for 2.5 seconds after switch is released. Wipers run at low speed while spraying, and continue run at low speed for 2 sweeps after wash cycle is complete, then return to park position.
  2. Turn wiper switch to LOW position. Wipers run continuously at low speed. Turn wiper switch to HIGH position. Wipers run continuously at faster speed. Turn wiper switch to OFF position. Wipers return to park position at low speed.
  3. Turn wiper switch to MIST position and release. Wipers make one complete sweep and return to park position. Turn wiper switch to minimum sensitivity (position closest to OFF), AUTO DELAY position. Single wipe should occur.
  4. Turn wiper switch to next higher sensitivity AUTO DELAY position. Repeat this step for all sensitivity positions. Single wipe should occur every time wiper switch is moved to another automatic position. If wiper system does not function properly, perform «PRELIMINARY INSPECTION»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system__preliminary-inspection) .
  5. Turn wiper switch to minimum sensitivity, AUTO DELAY position. Spray RAINSENSE(R) module heavily with water for 5 seconds using spray bottle or other suitable method. Wipers should run for 15 seconds or less. Wipers should NOT have any continuous wiping after 15 seconds. If wipers operate continuously for more than 15 seconds, RAINSENSE(R) module is faulty. See «RAINSENSE(R) MODULE(R)»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  6. Dry windshield using paper towels. Turn wiper switch to maximum sensitivity (position closest to LOW), AUTO DELAY position. Spray RAINSENSE(R) module heavily with water for 5 seconds using spray bottle or other suitable method. Wipers should run for 10 seconds or more. If wipers run in pulse mode within initial 10 seconds or stop running in 9 seconds or less, RAINSENSE(R) module is faulty. See «RAINSENSE(R) MODULE»(/cadillac/deville-concours/i-final-1999-1999/remont/wiperwasher-systems/#wiper-system-and-washer-system) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Before performing any test on wiper/washer system, check the following items to eliminate common problems

  1. Check wiper/washer related fuses.
  2. Check washer reservoir level.
  3. Check for kinked or damaged washer hoses.
  4. Check for damaged washer pump.
  5. Check for damaged, loose or corroded connections.
