DESCRIPTION
One mirror control switch adjusts both left (driver's side) and right (passenger's side) mirrors. Move selector switch to "L" or "R" position. Press mirror control switch in direction you want mirror to move. Some models are available with heated and memory mirrors.
Each power mirror assembly contains 2 reversible motors: an up/down motor and a left/right motor. Mirror control switch reverses polarity of motor circuit to change direction of mirror movement. Each motor contains a self-resetting circuit breaker, which opens when mirror reaches its mechanical limit of travel. On vehicles with memory seat/mirror systems, each power mirror assembly contains potentiometers that are used to determine mirror position.
PRELIMINARY INSPECTION
On outside power mirrors, check MIRROR fuse (10-amp) located in underhood fuse block. On automatic day/night mirrors, check ACC fuse (10-amp) located in rear compartment fuse block. Replace as necessary. On all systems, check for broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction, but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. These circuits may be intermittent or resistive when loaded, and if possible, should be checked by monitoring voltage drop with system operational (under load). Check courtesy lights for proper operation. Check and ensure grounds are clean and tight. Check for proper installation of aftermarket electronic equipment. Correct any obvious problems before continuing testing. If problem still exists, perform power mirror system check or automatic day/night mirrors system check. See OUTSIDE MIRROR SYSTEM CHECK or AUTOMATIC DAY/NIGHT MIRRORS SYSTEM CHECK .
OUTSIDE MIRROR SYSTEM CHECK
Note. Perform this check before diagnosing symptoms. If system does not operate as specified in test step, proceed to appropriate diagnosis and testing procedure under SYSTEM TESTS unless specified otherwise.
- Place mirror select switch in LEFT position. Operate mirror in all directions. Left outside mirror should move as commanded.
- Place mirror select switch in RIGHT position. Operate mirror in all directions. Right outside mirror should move as commanded.
- If vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors, press MEMORY 1 button. Single beep should be heard and both mirrors should move to programmed position for position No. 1. If system does not operate as specified in this test step, go to MEMORY SYSTEMS - DEVILLE & ELDORADO article.
- If vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors, press MEMORY 2 button. Single beep should be heard and both mirrors should move to programmed position for position No. 2. If system does not operate as specified in this test step, go to MEMORY SYSTEMS - DEVILLE & ELDORADO article.
- If vehicle is equipped with memory mirrors, press EXIT button. Left seat should move to programmed position for EXIT for last programmed driver. If system does not operate as specified in this test step, go to MEMORY SYSTEMS - DEVILLE & ELDORADO article.
- Turn ignition on. Place shift lever into Reverse position. Right outside mirror should tilt down approximately 7 degrees or to end of travel.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
| CAUTION | On some models, momentary actuation of power window switch can cause window to move directly to fully open position. When working inside door, leave ignition switch in OFF position whenever possible. |
Disconnect rear view mirror connector. Grasp the mirror with both hands and rotate the mirror in a downward, rearward motion to remove from button. To install, place mirror mount at top of button and slide down making sure to keep mount parallel to windshield. Press downward evenly until mirror mount snaps into place on button. An audible "click" will be heard. Reconnect electrical connector. Recheck operation of mirror. See AUTOMATIC DAY/NIGHT MIRRORS SYSTEM CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
Power mirror switch is part of master power window switch located in left front door panel arm rest, and must be replaced as one unit. Using tape, cover front of switch and rear of door upholstery to prevent damage. Using a thin-blade screwdriver, pry between switch and door panel for spring clip. On DeVille, clip is at front of switch. On Eldorado, clip is at rear of switch. On all models, press down on clip to release switch and pry outward. Disconnect electrical connector and remove switch. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal (Except Electrochromic Mirror)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Pull mirror and backing plate assembly out of mirror housing. (Scheme 8) Remove jack screws from mirror backing plate. If equipped with left power mirror defogger, disconnect electrical connectors.
Installation
Snap jack screws into NEW mirror backing plate. Align jack screws into power drive unit. Push mirror in close to power drive unit. Align swivel on power drive unit to pivot points in mirror backing plate and push in until click is heard. Check mirror operation.
Removal (Electrochromic Mirror)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Pull mirror and backing plate assembly out of mirror housing. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove actuator shafts from mirror backing plate.
- Snap actuator shaft into power drive unit. Ensure springs on actuator shafts are not pushed down on shafts, but seated in groove provided. Rotate actuator shafts to align ears with corresponding slots in back side of mirror face
- Align jack screws to drive unit and align drive unit swivel to pivot points on mirror backing plate. Using 2-inch by 3-inch block of wood, push center of mirror and backing plate assembly into housing until assembly clicks into place.
- Tilt mirror towards upper actuator shaft and apply pressure on block until ratchet sound stops. Tilt mirror toward outside actuator shaft and apply pressure until ratchet sound stops. Check mirror operation. If not operating properly, recheck actuator shaft alignment.
