Necessary preliminary tasks
- Remove «KNOB»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/automatic-trans/#gear-shift-mechanism-repair-n52__25-11-071-replacing-knob-for) for shift lever.
- Remove complete «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair-n52__18-00-020-removing-and-installing) .
- Remove rear «UNDERBODY PROTECTION»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-47-491-removing-and-installingreplacing) .
- Remove heat shields.
If necessary
Support transmission with workshop jack.
Remove screws and nuts.
Remove cross-member.
Tightening torque 23 71 1AZ/2AZ .

Feed U-gaiter from shift arm and out of body cutout.
Lift out shift lever.
Installation
Pull U-gaiter from below completely over shift arm receptacle.

Pull U-gaiter bead (4) over receptacle on shift arm and pop U-gaiter lips (3) into body cutout.
Make sure the arrow on the upper U-gaiter lip (3) is seated in the direction of travel and crossways to the shift lever eye (5).

Installation

Fit mount on shift arm receptacle.
Align retaining lugs of mount to openings in receptacle (crossways to direction of travel).
Press shift arm with mount downwards until mount snaps audibly into place (if necessary, use a pressing-in tool).

- Coat U-type bellows at the shaped element (2) with Circolight on the inside.
- Pull U-gaiter from above over shift lever and align
- Arrow on upper lip (3) must point crossways to mount eye (5) in direction of travel

Necessary preliminary tasks

- Press out bearing bush (1).
- Coat new bearing bush with Circolight.
- Then press into the gearshift arm until the side faces of the bearing bushes protrude evenly.

Pull ball socket (1) off the gearshift lever. Installation note: Grease ball joint.

Detach rubber boot (2) from gearshift lever (1).
Installation note: Degrease gearshift lever (1). Coat rubber boot on inside of shaped element (2) with Circo Light.
Pull rubber boot from above over gearshift lever (1) and align. Arrow (4) on rubber boot must point in direction of travel.
25 11 071 Replacing knob for shift lever
Pull installation frame of gaiter (1) from front upwards out of center console.
| IMPORTANT | Do not use a tool, as this would damage the installation frame or the center console. |

Note. Do not twist knob during removal as this would cause the turning lock in the knob to shear off.
Tug firmly to remove knob.
Installation
Fit knob on shift lever, align and press on until it snaps noticeably into place.

Make sure shims (3) are in correct position.

Lever spring washer (1) out of groove and push a little towards rear.
Press dowel pin (2) upwards/downwards out of shift rod joint and remove shift rod joint.

Grease ball of selector shaft.

Replace spring washer (1).

Check rubber ring (1) in shift rod joint (2) and replace if necessary.

Necessary preliminary tasks
- Remove rear underbody protection.
- Remove «TRIM»(ref-381258-S22067486212010122800000) for storage compartment.
Grip clamping sleeve (1) and slacken nut (2).
Detach retainer (3) downwards using a screwdriver.
Pull cable (4) out of holder.
Installation
Scheme 371
Release screws (1).
Tightening torque: 25 16 3AZ .
Disconnect plug connections (2).
Remove cables from holders.
Lift shift tower out of center console.

- Carefully pull gaiter taut on leather
- Gently press frame inwards until catch is released
- Lift out gaiter
