Quality Certification I

Every new vehicle which arrives at the BMW center requires that a Quality Certification (QCI) be performed. The QC I is performed in two parts.

  1. Display Vehicle Check
  2. Delivery Check

Display Vehicle Check

The Display Vehicle Check is performed if the vehicle is to be stored on the centers lot or showroom. The vehicle is inspected for shipping damage and any defects that may not have been caught at the VPC (Vehicle Preparation Center).

The remaining portion of the checklist should be left in the vehicle or put into the vehicle sales file.

Delivery Check

The Delivery Check is performed no more than 24 hours prior to the customer taking delivery of the vehicle. The purpose of the display check is to ensure that no damage or system problems have appeared since the vehicle was first checked at arrival to the center. The BMW center must deliver a vehicle to the customer free of any defects at time of delivery, this is difficult to ensure if the vehicle has not been inspected for several days or weeks.

BMW Engine Oil Service

All models (except M Roadster/M Coupe up to 2001) feature extended Oil Service intervals of 15,000 miles. This is a result of improvements in oil quality and durability provided by synthetic oils. Oil changes based on time have also been extended from 1 year to a maximum of 2 years unless indicated otherwise by the Service Indicator System.

Checking Thickness Of Brake Linings

Checking brake lining thickness is required during all services including Oil Services.

The outer brake linings can be checked without removing the wheels (except 750iL and Z8 front brakes). Move the car until opening for the brake lining wear indicator can be seen through the rim spokes.

Insert special tool 34 1 260 through rim into opening for the brake lining wear indicator.

Press special tool onto the brake lining. Slide ring (1) in direction of arrow as far as it will go and read the measured value.

  1. Brake Disc
  2. Brake lining and backing plate

Minimum thickness for brake linings is 3.0 mm.

Microfilter Replacement

The microfilter is an electrostatically charged filter that captures all particles down to a size of 5 microns. The microfilter removes such particles as pollen and asphalt dust. A plugged microfilter will create a serious reduction in airflow to the interior cabin and may cause the blower to stop working due to overheating of the final stage.

Replacement of the fresh air microfilters is required during the Oil Service and all Inspections on vehicles with the extended service intervals. Replacement is required during Inspections on earlier vehicles.

Brake Fluid Service

The brake fluid must be replaced every two years from the production date of the vehicle. Replacing the brake fluid may be done during an Inspection Service but must be invoiced separately.

Connect the DISplus or MoDiC to the vehicle and select

  1. Service Functions
  2. Bleeding ABS/ASC hydraulics

Remove the brake fluid from the reservoir and replenish with new fluid.

Connect a "one man pressure bleeder" to the brake fluid reservoir. (operate the bleeder according to the individual manufacturers instructions).

Scheme 376

Scheme 376

Note. Pressure must not exceed 2 bar.

Flush entire brake system using at least 250 ml of brake fluid for each wheel.

Open bleed valve and flush until clear, bubble free fluid is seen.

Flush in the order

  1. Right rear
  2. Left rear
  3. Right front
  4. Left front

Operate the hydraulic unit and pre-charge pump (DSC III) using the bleeding function in the diagnosis program.

Bleed the front and rear axles according to the repair manual instructions 34 00 048.

Engine Coolant Service

The engine coolant must be replaced every four years.

Oxygen Sensor Service

The oxygen sensors should be replaced at intervals of 100,000 miles.

Spark Plug Service

BMW engines from Model Year 1999 come equipped with Longlife Platinum Spark Plugs. The service interval of the longlife plug is 100,000 miles, except for application in the S62 engine which is an interval of 60,000 miles.

Be aware that earlier models may have been fitted with the Longlife spark plugs during a previous service, look for a label along the radiator support or shock tower indicating the 100,000 mile service interval of the new plugs.

The Spark plug tightening torque is 31 Nm.

Servicing The M-Mobility System (Motorsport Models Only)

The sealant bottle of the M-Mobility system must be replaced after the system has been used or after 3 years. Replacing the sealant every three years will ensure that the sealant has not hardened when required in an emergency.

Note. Replace label after servicing unit.

Changing Differential Oil

Only change the oil when the differential has been warmed to operating temperature.

Remove drain plug (1)

Remove filler plug (2)

Drain differential oil.

Re-insert drain plug with new sealing ring (1) and tighten to 70 Nm.

Add differential oil until overflowing from fill opening. (M5 and Z8 use SAF-XJ 83 22 1 470 080). Approximate quantity 1.4 liters.

Re-insert filler plug with new sealing ring and tighten to 70 Nm.

Changing Transmission Oil

Only change the oil when the transmission has been warmed to operating temperature.

Remove drain plug (1) and filler plug (2).

Drain transmission oil.

Re-insert drain plug (1) and tighten to 50 Nm.

Add transmission oil until overflowing from fill opening. (use MTF LT1 83 22 9 408 942). Approximate quantity 1.75 liters.

Re-insert filler plug and tighten to 50 Nm.
