Scheme 75: CONDITION BASED SERVICE : E87, E90, E91, E92, E93

Introduction

New scopes of maintenance work have been defined for Condition Based Service (CBS).

This will affect all model series with CBS, but each model will be affected at a different point in time.

The timing is orientated around the model upgrading or the start of series production.

The changes are described using the examples of the BMW 1-Series and BMW 3-Series. The introduction date is 03/2007 (E93 12/2006).

The following maintenance operations will be discontinued from CBS in the future.

  1. Microfilter
  2. Spark plugs
  3. Diesel particulate filter
  4. Exhaust emissions test (change through encoding since 09/2006)

Vehicles produced before the change are not affected.

Note. The operations microfilter and spark plugs are now coupled to the operation engine oil. The emissions test can again be activated using the BMW diagnosis system.

Concept of Condition Based Service (CBS)

Continuous developments in networking within the vehicle are constantly offering new ways in which the vehicle can communicate with the environment. This is becoming more and more beneficial for after-sales service. The Connected Service consists of several modules and provides new opportunities: from the automatic, vehicle-specific determination of the service requirement, to the optimization of the acceptance process.

The expectations of the most demanding customers are therefore fulfilled

  1. Precise date scheduling through distance-based or time-based interval forecasts for control units subject to wear
  2. Early recognition of problems
  3. Flexible service
  4. Individual advice and customer care (with visualization of the CBS data in the "Service reception" module)

One component of the Connected Service is requirement-oriented service

Condition Based Service (CBS)

In the BMW 1-Series and the new 3-Series, CBS is available in its 4th level of development.

[System overview...]

The remaining distance and/or absolute service-due date for maintenance operations are calculated and shown separately.

The calculation includes an integrated interval forecast, which reflects the driving profile.

With the flexible service intervals, the last service interval is taken as the new starting value.

CBS data are stored in the remote control (= key) or in the ID transmitter (with Comfort Access) while the vehicle is being driven. The service advisor can then read the CBS data using the Key Reader. The CBS data is displayed using the Service Acceptance Module (SAM).

After coordinating the Service measures, the order-specific service sheet can be printed out from the SAM.

Brief description of components

The Condition Based Service is a system function distributed over several control units in the vehicle.

  1. Instrument cluster The instrument cluster is the central unit. The CBS data for the full scope of maintenance work is stored in the instrument cluster. The information from the connected control units and information to be managed internally flow together into the instrument cluster (evaluation by traffic-light colors). In the instrument cluster the service requirement indicator appears for approximately 6 seconds at terminal 15 ON. The service requirement indicator shows the overall status of the vehicle in connection with the CBS. Detailed information on the full scope of maintenance work can also be requested manually. The display can be called up in either the instrument cluster or the Central Information Display (with M-ASK or CCC). The following target dates can be input in the instrument cluster: Statutory vehicle inspection Statutory emissions test *changed with new definition* A maintenance operation can be reset using the reset button for the trip distance recorder. The instrument cluster initializes an automatic Service Call when a maintenance operation is due (Tele Service 1 at BMW Assist telematics service center).
  2. Central Information Display On vehicles with multi-audio system controller (M-ASK) or Car Communication Computer (CCC): With this equipment, a folding Central Information Display (CID) is built into the dashboard. In the "Service" menu (in the 5th menu, "Settings"), detailed information on the scope of maintenance work of the CBS can be called up. In addition the following target dates can be input in the same menu: Statutory vehicle inspection Statutory emissions test *changed with new definition* A manual Service Call can also be triggered at the CID.
  3. Remote control or identification signal The CBS data is stored in both the remote control and the identification signal unit. The CBS data can be read out with the Key Reader in the Service Centre. The CBS data is displayed by the Service Acceptance Module (SAM). An identification signal unit is used for vehicles with Comfort Access.

For the Condition Based Service (CBS), information is exchanged with the following control units

  1. CAS: Car Access System From the CAS control unit, under certain conditions, the CBS data in the remote control or in the identification signal unit is updated. The CBS data is stored in the instrument cluster and, once redundant, in the CAS control unit. If the CAS control unit and the instrument cluster are replaced at the same time, the CBS data administered by the instrument cluster will then be lost. The data is delivered to the K-CAN.
  2. DME or DDE: digital engine electronics or digital diesel electronics Maintenance requirements for the engine oil is calculated in the DME control unit or DDE control unit (maintenance requirements = remaining distance and latest date for the engine oil change). The most important input value here is the fuel consumption. The instrument cluster contains the data as follows: DME control unit or DDE control unit -> PT-CAN -> Junction box electronics (gateway) -> K-CAN -> Instrument cluster On diesel engines, the DDE control unit calculates the maintenance requirements for the diesel particulate filter. *changed with new definition*
  3. IHKA/IHKR/IHR: Integrated automatic heating/air-conditioning system, integrated heating/air-conditioning stem, integrated heating system *changed with new definition* The maintenance requirements for the microfilter are calculated in this control unit (maintenance requirements = remaining distance and latest date for the microfilter change). The scope of maintenance work is calculated by the control unit from various values. The instrument cluster contains the data as follows: IHKA control unit, IHKR control unit or IHR control unit -> K-CAN -> Instrument cluster
  4. DSC: Dynamic Stability Control The remaining distance for the front and back brake pads are calculated separately in the DSC control unit. When making the calculation, the condition of the brake pad wear sensors is taken into account (reference point at 6 mm and 4 mm). The instrument cluster contains the data as follows: DME control unit -> PT-CAN -> Junction box electronics (gateway) -> K-CAN -> Instrument cluster IMPORTANT: Replace brake pad wear sensors before resetting.
  5. JBE: Junction box electronics The junction box electronics is the gateway between the PT-CAN and the K-CAN. Moreover, the diagnosis cable is connected to the junction box electronics.
  6. CA: Comfort Access For vehicles with Comfort Access: Under certain conditions the CBS data is saved on the identification signal unit. For this to happen, the identification signal unit should not be in the insert compartment. The CA control unit transfers the data via the interior aerial (radio).
  7. TCU or ULF: Telematics control unit or universal charger and hands-free system The control unit for the telephone is needed for an automatic or manual ServiceCall (TeleService 2 at BMW Assist telematics service center). The ServiceCall triggers the instrument cluster. The TCU or the ULF (universal charger/hands-free system) receives the data as follows: Instrument cluster -> K-CAN -> CCC or M-ASK (gateway) -> MOST -> TCU or ULF

TIME REFERENCE CHART

IMPORTANTThe reference time for time-dependent maintenance operations is the on-board date.

The on-board date is used for the display of escalation (green symbol, yellow symbol, red symbol). In addition, the on-board date is the basis for sorting the maintenance requirements in the display.

The on-board date stands still when the battery is flat or disconnected and must subsequently be corrected in the vehicle.

The on-board date must be set correctly when resetting maintenance requirements. Resetting is described in the general service information.

Engine oil

The determination of the correct time for a DME/DDE oil change depends on various values

  1. Fuel consumption The quantity of fuel used since the last oil change is recorded as an auxiliary quantity for evaluating the quality of the oil.
  2. Time Once in place, the oil will deteriorate with age. The calculation for the oil change determines the latest date by which the oil must be changed. The reference time is the on-board date. An oil change is due after 24 months at the latest.

The "engine oil" interval is flexible and dependent on the operating conditions. When resetting, the last value of the interval forecast is taken as the starting value for the new interval.

Special case: A defective oil level sensor will affect the display.

Diesel particulate filter (either as standard or option)

*changed with new definition*

The distance-dependent interval for the diesel particulate filter is calculated by the DDE control unit.

The starting value is calculated linearly up to 100, 000 km. Above 100, 000 km, the DDE control unit makes an adaptive calculation based on the exhaust-gas back-pressure.

With increasing mileage, the exhaust-gas back-pressure in the diesel particulate filter increases. The exhaust-gas back-pressure is recorded by the exhaust back-pressure sensor.

The "diesel particulate filter" interval is flexible and dependent on the operating conditions.

When resetting, the last value of the interval forecast is taken as the starting value for the new interval.

Microfilter

*changed with new definition*

The condition of the microfilter is calculated by the IHKA or IHKR control unit on the basis of the following values (= virtual sensor)

  1. Ambient temperature
  2. Wiper operation
  3. Useful life of the heater
  4. Air recirculation mode
  5. Vehicle road speed
  6. Fan speed
  7. Distance driven since the last filter change
  8. Time A filter change is due after 24 months at the latest.

The "microfilter" interval is flexible and dependent on the operating conditions. When resetting, the last value of the interval forecast is taken as the starting value for the new interval.

IMPORTANTMaintenance needed after resetting the microfilter.

After resetting the "microfilter" element of the maintenance work, the battery must not be disconnected immediately. Wait until the vehicle has gone into sleep mode.

Front and rear brake pads

The condition of the brake pad is determined by the DSC control unit. The calculation is based on a signal from the brake pad wear sensors at 2 points (4 mm and 6 mm). The condition of the brake pad is determined with the help of the following input values

  1. Wheel speed
  2. Braking pressure (determined by the open duration of the exhaust valve)
  3. Temperature of the brake disc (determined via a computer model consisting of wheel speed, brake pressure, ambient temperature, braking duration)
  4. Brakes service life

The "brake pad" interval is flexible and dependent on the operating conditions. When the interval is reset, the last value for the interval forecast is set as the starting value for the new interval (only if new brake pads are recognized by intact Brake pad wear sensors).

Spark plugs

*changed with new definition*

The distance-dependent interval for the spark plugs is managed in the instrument cluster (60, 000 or 100, 000 km, depending on the engine).

Vehicle check

The distance-dependent and time-dependent interval for the vehicle check is managed in the instrument cluster (48 months and DME: 50, 000 km, DDE: 60, 000 km).

Brake fluid

The time-dependent interval for the vehicle check is managed in the instrument cluster (24 months).

The reference time for the assessment is the on-board date.

Statutory vehicle inspection

The interval for the vehicle inspection is specified by the law of the country in which the vehicle is driven.

The target date is entered in the instrument cluster or in the Central Information Display (CID). The reference time is the on-board date. If the on-board date is wrongly set, this only affects the escalation level (green, yellow, red).

Statutory emissions test

*changed with new definition*

The interval for the exhaust gas inspection is specified by the law of the country in which the vehicle is driven.

The target date is entered in the instrument cluster or in the Central Information Display (CID).

The reference time is the on-board date. If the on-board date is wrongly set, this only affects the escalation level (green, yellow, red).

Pre-delivery check

The pre-delivery check is carried out with a service function in the BMW diagnosis system.

This function is not visible to the customer.

Scheme 76: PERSONAL PROFILE : E87, E90

The term Personal Profile means: saving and retrieving individual settings in the vehicle.

For the first time in the E87, drivers can flexibly tailor a multitude of personalized functions to their own preferences without having to visit a BMW contractual partner. The simple configuration and automatic pre-setting of the vehicle relieves the burden on the driver and increases comfort and traffic safety. The Individuality element of the BMW brand is permanently boosted.

Personal Profile builds on the familiar Car & Key Memory (CKM). With the CKM, the customer can set some functions him/herself via control elements. Other functions have to be set by a BMW contractual partner via the diagnosis system.

With Personal Profile, the driver can configure almost all functions him/herself. A separate profile which is activated when the vehicle is unlocked can be saved for up to 3 remote controls (or ID transmitters for comfort access). In addition, further remote controls can be assigned one of these 3 profiles.

The system operates in a decentralized manner without an additional control unit. The settings are implemented directly by the executing control units.

[System overview...]

The control units involved can be split into the following areas

  1. Control for central access to the profiles

Scheme 77: COMPLETE VEHICLE : E90

Highlights in brief

Since the market launch of the BMW 1-Series (E87), the BMW 3-Series has no longer been the entry-level vehicle. Compared to its predecessor (E46), the E90 is sportier, bigger and more innovative.

Many new features of the BMW 1-Series and the BMW 5-Series (E60) have also been incorporated into the E90.

Body

The E90 is bigger than the E46

  1. Length: + 49 mm
  2. Width: + 78 mm
  3. Height: + 6 mm
  4. Wheelbase: + 35 mm

These measurements primarily benefit the occupants.

  1. Passive safety of the body The E90 offers a high level of passive safety through high-strength steels. The rigidity of the body was increased through optimized cross-members and longitudinal members. The E90 achieved the best possible EURO NCAP score for passenger safety (5 stars). The E90 also achieved the best possible results in the high-speed rear impact crash test in the USA.
  2. Interior The interior is generous and ergonomically designed, and offers high levels of comfort: For example, the sports seats have seat back width adjustment. Depending on the equipment fitted, there is either a seat heating module or a seat module. The seat module controls both the seat heating and the seat memory. The seat heating module is controlled by the junction box electronics (JBE). The roller sunblind for the rear window is operated electrically via a button in the switch cluster center console. The illustration (above) shows, amongst other things, the control units for the air conditioning in the rear compartment. Beneath the two thumb wheels, there are 2 cigarette lighters* (round, option). The cigarette lighters can be used as sockets, e.g. for the following equipment: Car vacuum cleaner Torch The cigarette lighters offer a maximum output of 200 Watts with 12 volts. The E90: The cockpit is clearly and conveniently laid out.
  3. Passive safety in the passenger compartment The airbags of the E90 are familiar from the E87. 6 airbags protect the occupants: Driver's airbag Front passenger airbag Side airbag for driver and front passenger (integrated in the seat) Head airbag: The head airbag is from front to rear along the side. In the US version, there is also passive knee protection. The E90 has side upholstery on the rear seats (impact protection).
  4. The luggage compartment The E90 has and additional storage compartment in the luggage compartment.

Scheme 85

Scheme 85: Electrical system and electronics

Scheme 86

Scheme 86
  1. Vehicle circuit architecture In part, the E90 has the same vehicle circuit as the E60 and E87. This means that in many respects the 3-Series has all the technology of the 5-Series. The E90 has the same bus systems as the E60: K-CAN, MOST, PT-CAN and F CAN. The difference between it and its predecessor, the E46, is significant: The E46 did not yet have a 2000 vehicle circuit (2000 vehicle circuit is the BMW description for the vehicle circuit on the E65 and higher).
  2. Power supply The E90 has a similar system for the power supply as the E87 and the E60 (components such as the intelligent battery sensor and software). Power management when parked, so that the starting capability of the vehicle is maintained. Power management when the engine is running, so that the charge balance is always correct. The software for the power management is in the DME or in the DDE (DME: Digital Engine Electronics; DDE: Digital Diesel Electronics).
  3. New control units The following control units are new, by comparison with the E87: Footwell module (FRM) Junction box with distribution box with the junction box electronics (JBE) control unit Roof function center (FZD) Longitudinal dynamics management (LDM) Active steering (AL) Active Cruise Control (ACC)
  4. Active safety Active safety helps to prevent accidents. The active safety in the E90 has been optimized in many areas: Active Steering The E90 has the active steering from the E60. The yaw moment compensation of the active steering is new. The yaw moment compensation prevents the vehicle from skidding when braking on a road with an unequal road surfaces (e.g. ice on the right and rough road surface on the left). Active steering compensates for this yaw moment. Thus, active steering protects against problematic steering movements. In addition, active steering has an improved interface to the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). Dynamic Stability Control DSC Mk60E5 is a further development of the DSC MK60E in the E87. The DSC in the E90 has the following new functions: Braking readiness through precautionary application of the brake pads in emergency situations Optimization of the friction factor of the brakes: The brake discs are regularly freed from humidity on wet roads (dry brakes). In the event of fading, the brake pressure is increased. (Fading: Braking efficiency deteriorates when the brakes are very hot.) Soft stop when braking: Even if you brake until the vehicle is at a standstill, there is no jerk when the vehicle stops. Pull-away assistance for hill starts Optimized interface for Active Cruise Control: The software in the DSC control unit assesses the requirements of the ACC even quicker (ACC: Active Cruise Control). Yaw moment compensation for active steering (integrated in the DSC) Lighting: Adaptive headlight E90 has adaptive headlights based on the AHL E60 (AHL stands for Adaptive Head Lights). The software for the adaptive headlights is integrated in the footwell module (FRM). Lighting: 2-stage brake lights The E90 has 2-stage brake lights: The brake lights are brighter when you brake heavily. Park Distance Control In the E90, Park Distance Control (PDC) is only available in the equipment version: front and rear. (On the E87, there is also Park Distance Control for the rear only.) Brakes The rear brake discs are ventilated internally. Internally ventilated brake discs are cooled better and are less susceptible to fading.
  5. Passive safety Passive safety helps to keep damage in the event of an accident as low as possible. Multiple restraint system 5 The multiple restraint system (MRS) is already known from the E87. As on the E87, the side airbags are fitted in the seat backs of the driver's seat and the front passenger seat. The following are new in the US version: Airbag front sensors in the engine compartment on the side member Airbag sensors: Pressure sensors in the driver's door and the front passenger door Seat occupancy mat on the front passenger seat
  6. Car Access System and START-STOP button There is no longer an ignition key or ignition starter switch. Instead, as with the 7-Series BMW (E65), there is a slot for the remote control and the START-STOP button.
  7. Comfort Access The E90 has the Comfort Access option. Comfort Access means: The vehicle is unlocked and started or unlocked without the need to have the identification sensor in your hand. Comfort Access is taken from the E87. Of course, the monitoring range of the antenna has been adapted to the body of the E90. There is a separate antenna in the luggage compartment. (On the E87, the rear interior antenna also monitored the luggage compartment.)
  8. Cruise control and longitudinal dynamics management Depending on the option, there are 3 equipment variants of the cruise control: Cruise control option for vehicles with 4-cylinder engines: Cruise control through engine control: Load increase for acceleration and engine drag torque (engine brake). The cruise control option does not have longitudinal dynamics management. Cruise control option with brake function for vehicles with 6-cylinder engines: This cruise control works with engine control and brakes. This cruise control holds the desired road speed even when driving downhill with a heavy trailer. The cruise control with brake function option has a new control unit: longitudinal dynamics management (LDM). The LDM control unit evaluates all data for cruise control with brake function. Example: The ACC sensor reports Vehicle monitored. The LDM control unit evaluates this message. The DME control unit or the DDE control unit controls the engine speed. The DSC control unit controls the brakes. Active cruise control option for vehicles with 6-cylinder engines: With this cruise control, a (time) interval from the vehicle in front can be set. This option also has an LDM control unit for longitudinal dynamics management. Exception: On the E63 and E64, the ACC control unit performs longitudinal dynamics management.
  9. Instrument cluster The instrument cluster of the E90 is almost identical to the instrument cluster of the E87. The following is new: On the round instrument for the speed display, there is an indicator disc for the desired speed (Set speed) of the cruise control. In the instrument cluster, there are 2 new, legally prescribed indicator lights: Indicator light for the Active Steering Indicator light for the Distance Control The instrument cluster of the E90 is the same as the E87 in the following areas: The on-board computer has further functions. E.g. Gasoline engines have an oil level display. And: The instrument lighting can be dimmed via the on-board computer. The fuel reserve is displayed with a Check-Control message. Condition Based Service in 4th level of performance The instrument cluster control unit is the master control unit for the unit of measure in all displays. The instrument cluster control unit is not a gateway (i.e. data interface) to the bus system.
  10. Integrated heating/air conditioning system or integrated automatic heating/air-conditioning system The E90 is equipped with the integrated heating/air-conditioning system (IHKR) as standard. The integrated automatic heating/air-conditioning system (IHKA) is available as an option (option 534). With the IHKA, the air-conditioning system can be controlled separately for the left and right side in the front. Vehicles with diesel engines have an electric auxiliary heater.
  11. Information and communication systems Some information is not only displayed in the instrument cluster, but also in the Central Information Display (CID). Examples: Information on the Condition Based Service Information on the Check-Control icons or Check-Control messages in the instrument cluster. iDrive describes the operation and use of information and communication systems: The menus in the display are selected via a controller in the center console. Navigation systems: The two BMW navigation systems are available as options: BMW Business Navigation System or BMW Professional Navigation System. Telephone: All services of BMW Assist are offered with the Telephone, TCU Business option: Emergency call BMW Mobile Service BMW Info Traffic information All telephones have a Bluetooth interface. Telephones with ULF (universal charger and hands-free kit) do not have the support services. In the US version, it is also possible to make an emergency call without a telephone. High Fidelity: The HiFi System Professional option has more loudspeakers than the E87.
  12. Steering column switch cluster The E90 has the steering column switch cluster of the E87. The steering angle and the switch settings of the steering column stalk are detected without contact (optically). This excludes any mechanical influences. The pressure points of the steering column stalk remain the same for the entire life of the vehicle. The steering column switch cluster control unit has an additional processor (compared with the E87). The steering column switch cluster can only be programmed via the DSC control unit. Signal path: DSC -> F-CAN -> SZL.
  13. Personal Profile All Car & Key Memory functions are programmed inside the vehicle itself. Please refer to the «PERSONAL PROFILE»(/bmw/m3/e90-2007-2013/remont/oem-general-information/#maintenance-and-general-information-service-techniques) section in the Owner's Handbook: individual settings for a maximum of 3 remote control units via the display in the instrument cluster or via the Central Information Display

Suspension

The suspension design of the E90 is similar to the suspension of the E87.

  1. Front axle The front axle is made of aluminium and is therefore very light. Nonetheless, the front axle is very rigid. The steering is a front-mounted rack-and-pinion power-steering system. The front axle is a double-link, spring-strut front axle. The wheel is guided as follows: by the spring strut by 2 links: by a tension strut and a pressure strut
  2. Rear axle The rear axle is a five-arm rear axle. This ensures especially good wheel guidance.
  3. Wheels and tires The E90 has steel or alloy wheels. The tires are run-flat tires: In the event of a flat tire, it is possible to drive for up to a further 250 km at a maximum speed of 80 km/h.

  1. Engine High engine speed, high performance. The new BMW gasoline engines no longer ensure their performance through large engine capacities, but through high engine speeds (with high level of balance). For the BMW 3-Series, the following engines will be available at the start of series production: 4-cylinder engines (gasoline engines and diesel engines) with Valvetronic and VANOS. 6-cylinder engines: N52B25 and N52B30 (gasoline engines)

The illustration shows the N52B25.

  1. Transmission The following transmissions are available: Manual transmission: 6-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard. Automatic transmission: For the E90, there are two versions of the 6-speed automatic transmission: GA6HP19Z and GA6HP26Z (also fitted in the E53, E60). Differences between the automatic transmissions: Torque converter Clutches with different number of steel and lined plates
