Locking cable, removing and installing

Removing

CAUTIONFollow steps required when disconnecting battery. --> 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL 27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL

Note. The battery is located in the rear compartment, in the spare wheel well.

  1. Disconnect ground strap on battery (in rear compartment) with ignition switched off. --> «27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment)
  2. Remove airbag module on drivers side and steering wheel. --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  3. Remove trim (left side) beneath instrument panel. --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  4. Remove steering column trim. --> «70 - INTERIOR TRIM»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  1. Unscrew handle for adjusting steering column height and position.
  2. Turn ignition key to "ignition on" position.
  3. Shift selector lever into "P" position.
  1. Pull out clip - 2 - for locking cable - 3 -.
  2. Pull locking cable out of steering lock - 1 -.
  3. Remove selector lever handle --> «Selector lever handle, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-direct-shift-automatic-transmission-02e-awd__selector-lever-handle-removing-and-installing) .
  4. Remove rear center console. --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  1. Lift up locking lever - A - and pull off locking cable in direction of arrow.

Note. Do not loosen bolt - B - !

  1. Pull locking cable out of instrument panel.

Installing

Perform installation in reverse sequence of removal. Note the following

  1. The locking cable must not be kinked.
  2. Adjust locking cable after installing --> «Locking cable, adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-direct-shift-automatic-transmission-02e-awd__locking-cable-adjusting) .

  1. Route locking cable - arrow - from steering lock to selector mechanism in such a way that it passes behind wiring harness - 1 - and underneath footwell air outlet - 2 - and carpet - 3 -.
  2. Shift selector lever into "P" position.
  1. Lift locking lever - A - and fit locking cable in opposite direction of arrow. If necessary, loosen bolt - B -.

  1. Push locking cable into steering lock.

The flat side of the locking cable points downward.

  1. Fit clip - 2 - of locking cable - 3 -.

Installed position

Fit clip from above. Angled ends of clip must point towards steering lock.

  1. Ensure that clip is properly engaged.
  2. Adjust locking cable --> «Locking cable, adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-direct-shift-automatic-transmission-02e-awd__locking-cable-adjusting) .
  3. Check operation of ignition key withdrawal lock --> «Ignition key removal lock operation, checking»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-direct-shift-automatic-transmission-02e-awd__ignition-key-removal-lock-operation-checking) .
  4. Install rear center console. --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  1. Install selector lever handle --> «Selector lever handle, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-direct-shift-automatic-transmission-02e-awd__selector-lever-handle-removing-and-installing) .
  2. Install trim (left side) beneath instrument panel. --> «68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  3. Install steering column trim. --> «70 - INTERIOR TRIM»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  4. Install handle for adjusting steering column height and position.
  1. Install steering wheel and airbag. --> «69 - PASSENGER PROTECTION - AIRBAGS, SEAT BELTS»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-interior)
  2. Connect ground strap to battery.
  3. Follow steps required after connecting battery. --> «27 BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL»(/audi/tt/8n-2003-2006/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment)
