Connecting VAG1551 Scan Tool

  1. Apply parking brake and move selector lever into position "P" or "N."
  2. Connect VAG1551 (VAG1552) Scan Tool to 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) to left of steering column, using adapter cable VAG1551/3.

Checking DTC memory

  1. Start engine and run at idle speed.
  2. Depress brake pedal once, briefly.
  3. Press "Print" button to turn printer on.
  4. Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.
  5. Press button -0- twice to insert "Automatic Test Sequence" address word 00.
  6. Press -Q- button to confirm input (VAG1551 Scan Tool sends all known address words one after the other).

If a control module answers with its identification, the number of stored DTCs or "No DTC recognized" is displayed. Any DTCs stored are then displayed and printed out one after the other. The VAG1551 Scan Tool then sends the next address word.

1) Two operating modes are displayed alternately.

  1. Switch ignition off.

If DTCs are stored, appropriate repairs must then be carried out. The printed log must be retained by the Service Department.

Note. The VAG1551 Scan Tool must remain connected for adapting SRI displays and for performing any required emissions test.

Testing

  1. Measure voltage between pole terminals using digital multimeter. If multimeter indicates 12.5 volts or more, battery is OK If voltage is below 12.5 volts, cause must be determined

Engine and engine compartment, visual inspection

  1. Inspect engine and engine compartment for leaks and damage.
  2. Inspect lines, hoses and connections of fuel, brake, cooling and heating systems for leaks, chafing, porosity and deterioration.

Brake system, visual inspection

  1. Inspect brake master cylinder, brake servo unit, hydraulic unit, and brake calipers for leaks and damage.
  2. Make sure that brake hoses are not twisted.
  3. Make sure that brake hoses do not make contact with any parts of car when steering is at full lock.
  4. Inspect brake hoses for porosity, deterioration, and chafing.
  5. Make sure that brake line connections and attachments are correctly seated and free of leaks and corrosion.
CAUTIONRepair any malfunctions found.

Underbody sealant, visual inspection

  1. During inspection, pay attention to underside of floor, wheel arches and sills.

Any damage to the underbody sealant must be repaired.

Inspection service

  1. Check tires for scuffing, increased tread wear on one side, porous side walls, cuts and fractures and advise customer of any problems found.

Front tire tread wear patterns indicate the following problems

  1. Feathering on tread: incorrect toe setting
  2. Increased tread wear on one side: incorrect camber setting

If wear of this nature is noticed, the cause should be determined by checking the wheel alignment.

  1. The brake fluid level should always be assessed relative to brake pad wear. A slight drop in the fluid level occurs as a result of wear and automatic adjustment of the brake pads.
  2. If the fluid level is at the MIN marking or slightly above, it is not necessary to add fluid if the brake pad wear limit has nearly been reached.
  3. If the brake pads are new or far from being at their wear limit, the fluid level should be between the MIN and MAX markings.
  4. If the fluid level has dropped below the MIN marking, it is necessary to inspect the brake system before topping off the brake fluid.

Road test

The following checks should be carried out in accordance with the vehicle equipment and the road conditions available (i.e. urban or rural) during the road test.

Inspection

  1. Inspect RAPGARD(R) for damage or peeling.

If RAPGARD(R) is disturbed (dented, scratched, etc.)

  1. You must note the damage on the Carrier Delivery Receipt, including damage type, extent and location. Failure to note damage on the Carrier Delivery Receipt will result in nonpayment of the repair.

Note. RAPGARD(R) must be removed from the vehicle no later than six months after application. See sticker (location on vehicle body varies) for detailed information.

Within 72 Hours prior to delivery to the Customer

  1. Remove RAPGARD(R) from vehicle.
  2. Wash vehicle exterior.
  3. Inspect paint surfaces, moldings and glass.
  4. Protect the paint surface of all new vehicles by applying 3M Perfect-It(tm) Paste Wax (3M Part No. 39526) or equivalent.

RAPGARD(R), paint inspection after removal

  1. Inspect painted surfaces under one of the following lighting conditions
  1. Indoors under fluorescent lighting.
  2. Outdoors under bright sunlight.
