CHECKING FLUID LEVEL

CAUTIONPart numbers are listed for reference only. Always check with your Parts department for latest information.

Note. Only ATF with designation (ESSO LT 71141) can be added to ATF. Additives cannot be used.

Note. ATF level is affected by ATF temperature. Checking ATF level at too low a temperature leads to overfilling. Checking ATF level at too high a temperature leads to under filling. Overfilling or under filling transaxle can lead to transaxle malfunction. ATF temperature can be read with Vehicle Diagnostic, Test and Information System or at display of VAG (1551) Scan Tool.

Note. V.A.G. Scan Tool (1551) is required to check ATF level. Scan tool is used to measure ATF temperature. Follow aftermarket scan tool manufacturer instructions (if applicable) to check ATF temperature.

  1. Ensure transmission is not in "mechanical backup" mode. Ensure ATF temperature is not higher than 104° F (30° C) at start of testing. Shift selector lever into "P" position. Start engine and idle. Turn A/C and heat off. Ensure vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Hang filled ATF reservoir (V.A.G. 1924) as high as possible on vehicle. Ensure selector lever is in "P" position and engine is on and at idle. Place drain pan under transmission oil pan to catch spilled fluid.
  3. Connect Vehicle Diagnostic, Test and Information System VAS 5051 with adapter cable VAS 5051/1, or connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool with adapter cable VAG 1551/3 to Data Link Connector (DLC) under knee bar under steering wheel according to manufacturer instructions. (Scheme 41)or (Scheme 42).
  4. Press button "1" to select "Rapid data transmission" operating mode 1. Press buttons "0" and "2" to insert "Transmission Electronics" address word 02. Press "Q" button to confirm input.
  5. Press "right arrow" button. Press buttons "0" and "8" to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08. Press "Q" button to confirm input. Press buttons "0", "0" and "4" to input display group number 004. Press "Q" button to confirm input. ATF temperature is indicated in display field 1 in °C.
  6. Remove ATF filler plug (2). (Scheme 43) ATF level is correct when a small amount of ATF runs out while temperature is between 86° F (30° C) and 113° F (45° C), or 122° F (50° C) for hot climates.
  7. If no ATF drains when at specified temperature range, insert filling hook of filling device (VAG 1924) into ATF plug hole (2). (Scheme 43) Add ATF with filling device (arrow) until ATF flows from plug opening. (Scheme 44)
  8. Always replace ATF plug gasket. Insert plug, and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8558-S20359619212000091100000). Press "arrow" button on Scan Tool (VAG 1551) Enter "06" for function "End output" and confirm entry by pressing "Q".

Scheme 45: Front Final Drive
  1. Drive vehicle a short distance to warm up gear oil to about 140°F (60°C). Raise and support vehicle. Ensure vehicle is level. Turn engine off and let gear oil settle to bottom of case for 2 minutes.
  2. Place drain pan under final drive. Remove fill plug (arrow) on side of final drive. (Scheme 45)
  3. If necessary, remove heat shield and input shaft from transmission, to gain access to bolt. Gear oil level should be at lower edge of fill hole. Add appropriate fluid as required. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(ref-8558-S00968049602000091100000). Install fill plug with NEW sealing ring. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8558-S20359619212000091100000).

  1. Remove bolts (1 and 4). (Scheme 46) Remove ATF lines (A and B) from transmission. install hose on end of line (B), and fasten with hose clamp. Put other end of hose in suitable container. Allow fluid to drain.
  2. Blow compressed air (maximum of 10 bar/145 psi) through line (A) several times. Install hose on line (A), and repeat procedure. Reinstall oil lines. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-8558-S20359619212000091100000).
  3. Check ATF level and add ATF as necessary. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-8558-S21544988812000091100000).
