Ignition System 22 illustrations ~3740 words

General notes on ignition system

  1. The engine control module is equipped with On Board Diagnostic (OBD).
  2. For trouble-free operation of the electrical components a voltage of at least 11.5 V is necessary.
  3. During some of the tests it is possible that the control module will detect and record a malfunction. The DTC memory must therefore be checked and if necessary erased when all tests and repair work have been completed.
  4. After completing trouble shooting, repairs or component tests, it is possible that the engine will start, run for a short period and then cut out. If this happens it may be that the immobilizer is blocking the engine control module. In such cases the DTC memory must be checked and if necessary the control module must be adapted.

Safety precautions

To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted

WARNINGBe alert when working on or near the engine. High ignition secondary voltage can cause serious personal injury and damage vehicle components. DO NOT touch or disconnect ignition wiring when the engine is running or being turned at starter speed. DO NOT operate the starter if fuel injectors are removed. Always switch off the ignition before connecting or disconnecting the battery, otherwise the engine control module may be damaged. The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables. In order to run the engine at starting speed without actually starting it (e.g. to test compression), disconnect the connectors from the output stages of the ignition coils and from all the fuel injectors. After completing the work, check and erase the DTC memory. If DTC memory was erased generate readiness code. See READINESS CODE, GENERATING . The ignition must always be switched off when cleaning the engine.
CAUTIONBefore disconnecting the battery: Stop the engine. Be sure of proper radio code (for vehicles equipped with coded anti-theft radio). When connecting and disconnecting electrical test equipment (LED voltage tester, multi meter, etc.): Be sure the ignition is switched OFF. Use correct adapters from VAG 1594 connector test kit

Ignition coils, checking

Note. Each ignition coil is combined with its power output stage as a single component.

Test conditions

  1. No malfunctions stored relating to any of the fuel injectors

The procedure for identifying an inoperative or misfiring cylinder is as follows

  1. Disconnect harness connectors from fuel injectors in sequence with engine running, and observe engine behavior.
  2. Compare spark plugs of all cylinders with each other and check for soot on the electrodes.

When the faulty cylinder has been identified

  1. Swap spark plug of faulty cylinder with one from another cylinder.

If the malfunction moves with the spark plug

  1. Replace spark plug.

If the malfunction remains in the same cylinder

  1. Swap ignition coil of faulty cylinder with one from another cylinder.
  2. If malfunction moves now to other cylinder, install new ignition coil.

Checking Ground (GND) connection for ignition coil

  1. Display 4-pin connector from relevant ignition coil.
  2. Check Ground (GND) connection between socket 4 on the 4-pin connector and engine Ground (GND) for open circuit and short circuit to positive.
  3. Correct any open/short circuit as necessary.

If the Ground (GND) connection is OK, test the voltage supply to the ignition coil. See CHECKING VOLTAGE SUPPLY TO IGNITION COIL .

Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor -G40- and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor 2 -G163-, checking

The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor -G40- indicates the ignition position for Cylinder 1.

If the CMP sensor fails to function, the knock control is switched off and the ignition timing is retarded slightly because cylinder assignment is no longer possible.

Even without a signal from the CMP sensor the engine will continue to run and can also be re-started.

If a malfunction is detected the engine control module produces one spark per crankshaft revolution for each cylinder.

If the injection system is one revolution out of phase it does not have any noticeable effect on the fuel injection. If this happens, the fuel is injected upstream of the closed inlet valve instead of while the inlet valve is open. This has only a minor influence on the quality of the air/fuel mixture.

Note. The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 2 -G163- is located at the rear of the left-hand cylinder head (Bank 2). The Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor -G40- is located at the front of the right-hand cylinder head (Bank 1). Component locations of CMP sensors. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS, OVERVIEW .

Checking activation of CMP sensor

Use test leads VAG 1594 connector test kit when carrying out the following tests

  1. Push back rubber grommet on relevant CMP sensor connector.
  2. Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp to terminals 1 and 2 of CMP sensor connector from behind (without disconnecting connector from sensor).

Note. The connector terminals are numbered on the back of the connector.

  1. Operate starter for few seconds. Diode test lamp should blink briefly once every two engine revolutions.

Note. Diode test lamps with a low current draw continue to glow faintly between impulses from the engine control module (rather than going out completely) and become much brighter when receiving an impulse.

If the diode test lamp does not flash, test the voltage supply.

Checking voltage supply for CMP sensor

  1. Disconnect harness connector from relevant CMP sensor.
  2. Switch ignition on.
  3. Connect VAG 1526 multimeter (voltage measurement range) between engine Ground (GND) and socket 1 of connector. Specification: approx. 5 V

Checking signal wire for CMP sensor

  1. Switch ignition on.
  2. Connect VAG 1526 multimeter (voltage measurement range) between engine Ground (GND) and socket 2 of relevant connector. Specification: approx. battery voltage

Checking Ground (GND) wire for CMP sensor

  1. Connect VAG 1526 multimeter (resistance measurement range) between socket 3 on connector and engine Ground (GND). Specification: Continuity Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 ohm

If all the readouts match the specifications but the diode test lamp does not flash (measurement taken between terminals 1 and 2 without unplugging connector and while operating starter)

  1. Replace relevant CMP sensor.

If the readouts do not match the specification, check the wiring.

Scheme 156

Camshaft adjustment control, function

The adjustment of the intake camshafts is controlled according to engine load and engine speed. The timing of the exhaust camshafts is not variable.

The electrically operated solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment transmit oil pressure to the mechanical camshaft adjusters.

The mechanical camshaft adjusters then advance the inlet camshafts for both cylinder banks, which means that the inlet valves will open earlier.

When camshaft adjustment is activated, both solenoid valves should click audibly.

If this result is not obtained, perform the following tests

Electrically testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment

  1. Disconnect harness connector from camshaft adjustment solenoid valve which is to be tested.
  2. Measure resistance between valve contacts using VAG 1526 multimeter. Specification: 10 to 18 ohm

If the reading does not match the specification

  1. Replace relevant camshaft adjustment solenoid valve.

Checking voltage supply to camshaft adjustment solenoid valves

  1. Disconnect harness connector from solenoid valve which is to be tested.
  2. Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp between engine Ground (GND) and socket 1 (B+) of harness connector using test leads from VAG 1594 connector test kit.
  3. Operate starter for few seconds. Engine can be allowed to start. Diode test lamp should light up.

If the diode test lamp does not light up, perform the following tests

  1. Test fuse for camshaft adjustment solenoid valves. See appropriate System Wiring Diagram article.

If fuse is OK
