Changes implemented from June 1998
Between week 36 and week 44 of 1998 the production of air conditioning unit version "1" has been converted to air conditioning version "2" as a running change. Both versions can be differentiated through specific characteristics. See CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR CONDITIONER VERSIONS 1 AND 2 .
Note. Vehicles with 8 cylinder engines are only equipped with air conditioning unit version "2". When replacing the air conditioning unit or the A/C control head, always observer the additional notes in the parts catalog.
- A/C control head -E87- Only A/C control heads with part number and until index "G" must be installed in vehicles with air conditioning unit version "1" Only A/C control heads with part number and from index "H" must be installed in vehicles with air conditioning unit version "2"
- Intermediate piece for defroster channel Air conditioning units version "1" have an intermediate piece with two openings to the air conditioning unit installed. Air conditioning units version "2" have an intermediate piece with one opening to the air conditioning unit installed.
- Defroster Flap Motor -V107-. The lever arm on Defroster Flap Motor -V107- is different between air conditioning unit "1" and "2".
- Fresh Air Blower -V2- The blower wheel for the fresh air blower installed in version "2" air conditioning unit is approx. 10 mm shorter than the one for version "1".
- Air distribution housing Housing On air conditioning version "1", the air guide to the intermediate part for defroster channel takes place via two openings, from version "2" the two openings have been combined into one opening. Air distribution flaps in air distribution housing Position of the three air flow flaps to the instrument panel vents. From version "2", when the center flap is closed the two outer flaps remain a little bit open (angle between both flaps approx. 40 degree), therefore a small amount of air can always flow to the right and left instrument panel vents. On version "1" all three flaps close completely. Evaporator From version "2", the width of the evaporator is 32 mm less than in version "1" (58 mm instead of 90 mm) Starting with version "2", the evaporator cannot be removed from the air distributor housing anymore (the housing must be disassembled, due to the changed refrigerant line connection). The refrigerant lines have been adapted to the evaporator.
- Air flow duct with intake duct. The air duct has been adapted to the changed fresh air blower fan. The blower wheel for the fresh air blower installed in version "2" air conditioning unit is approx. 10 mm shorter than the one for version "1". From version "2", the air duct at the fresh air blower fan is narrower than the air duct in version "1".

- Remove dust and pollen filter. See «DUST AND POLLEN FILTER ELEMENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-2001-2004/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#air-conditioning__dust-and-pollen-filter-element-removing). Intake housing and fresh air blower in version "1" Air duct -A- can be seen through the fresh air intake opening. Intake housing and fresh air blower in version "2" No air duct is present.
- Remove glove box: See «GLOVE BOX, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-2001-2004/remont/mirrors/#interior-equipment__glove-box-removing-and-installing). Air duct in version "1" Air duct in version "2" The air duct is designed to be smaller in area -A- than the duct in version "1". (Scheme 82) Bracket -B- extends out more than in version "1". - Air distributor housing in version "1" The air is directed to the spacer for defroster duct through two openings -A-. (Scheme 83) The air flaps -B- close fully at the same time. Flaps -A-, -B- and -C- are made of sheet steel.
- Air distributor housing in version "2" The air is directed to the spacer (intermediate piece) for defroster duct through one opening -A-. (Scheme 84) Flaps -C- remain open slightly when the center flap -B- is closed (angle between the flaps is approximately 40 degree) Flaps -A-, -B- and -C- are made of plastic.
