Scheme 1281

Scheme 1281: Engine Control Module (ECM) J623 , removing and installing
  1. Hot air gun VAS 1978/14 - Pos. 1 - with nozzle attachment - 2 - from wiring harness repair kit VAS 1978 or equivalent.
  2. Locking pliers - 3 - (commercially available).

Removing

  1. Remove rubber seal - 1 - from plenum chamber cover.
  1. Remove plenum chamber cover - 2 -.
  2. Using a screwdriver, remove wiper arms caps - arrows -.
  3. Loosen wiper arm nuts - arrows - several turns.
  4. Loosen wiper arms by gently rocking.
  1. Remove wiper arm nuts and wiper arms.
  2. Remove screws - arrows - retaining the cowl grill - 1 -.
  3. Remove cowl grill from windshield.

  1. Remove screws - arrows - and electronics box cover from the electronics box.

  1. Using a screwdriver - arrows 1 and 2 - , carefully remove the retaining clip - 2 -.
CAUTIONTo prevent damages (burning) of wire and harness connections, insulation and control modules, perform the following work procedures exactly! Observe operating instructions for heat gun.

  1. Using Hot air gun VAS 1978/14 heat the shear bolts as follows
  2. Direct heat gun nozzle at shear bolts of the protective housing.

  1. Switch heat gun on and heat bolt for approx. 20 to 25 seconds.
  2. Remove shear bolts with locking pliers - arrow -.

Note. When the electrical connector is disconnected from the Engine Control Module (ECM) J623 , adaptation values are erased and content of the DTC memory remains intact.

  1. Remove electrical harness connector retaining brackets and electrical harness connectors from Engine Control Module (ECM) J623.
  2. Remove Engine Control Module (ECM) J623.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Note the following

Note. New shear bolts must be used when reinstalling the electrical harness connector retaining brackets to the Engine Control Module (ECM) J623. After installing a new Engine Control Module (ECM) J623 it must be adapted. --> Engine Control Module (ECM) J623 , replacing .

Final procedures

After connecting electrical harness connectors to Engine Control Module (ECM) J623 , the following work steps must be performed in the following sequence

  1. Check DTC memory..
  2. If necessary, erase DTC memory..
  3. If DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code..
