- Remove valve adjusters. Set camshaft in place. Install camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and 4. Alternately tighten bolts in a diagonal pattern. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49282-S21222718392001091300000) . Install camshaft bearing caps No. 2 and 3. Tighten bolts to specification. Leave Hall sender (left cylinder head) or vacuum pump (right cylinder head) removed.
- Remove camshaft bearing caps No. 2 and 4. Mount dial indicator on front of cylinder head. Push camshaft toward dial indicator. Zero dial indicator. Push camshaft away from dial indicator. Distance indicated is end play. If end play is within specification, install camshaft. See «ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49282-S11433825192001091300000) . If end play is not within specification, replace camshaft thrust bearing cap (if equipped), camshaft and/or cylinder head as necessary, and install camshaft.
Installation
Remove camshaft and install valve adjusters that were removed to check camshaft end play. Replace camshaft seal and cylinder head rear end seals. See CAMSHAFT SEAL and CYLINDER HEAD REAR END SEALS. Set camshaft in place. Install camshaft bearing caps No. 1 and 4. Alternately tighten bolts in a diagonal pattern. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install camshaft bearing caps No. 2 and 3. Tighten bolts to specification. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
