Engine Removal

Special Tools Required

Note. Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces. To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion. Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

  1. Disconnect the support struts from both sides of the pivot ball (bolted to the hood). Secure the hood in a vertical position. Install the left side pivot ball into the lower threaded hole. NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position, as it will damage the support strut and hood.
  2. Relieve the fuel pressure (see «FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-supply-system-v6__fuel-pressure-relieving) ).
  3. Remove the engine compartment covers (see «ENGINE COMPARTMENT COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim-v6__engine-compartment-cover-replacement) ).
  4. Remove the intake air separator.
  5. Do the battery removal procedure (see «RECONNECTION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/body-electrical/#battery-v6__reconnection) ).
  6. Remove the air cleaner (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/mechanical/#intake-air-system-v6__throttle-body-cleaning) ).
  7. Remove the harness clamp (A) from the battery base (B).
  8. Remove the bolts (C), and loosen the bolts (D), then remove the battery base.
  9. Remove the strut brace (see «FRAME BRACE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exterior-body-panels/#frame-v6) ).
  10. Disconnect the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.
  11. Remove the bolts (A) securing the PCM.
  12. Disconnect the PCM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connector (B), and remove the harness clamps (C) and the bracket (D).
  13. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) (see «FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING REMOVAL»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-supply-system-v6__fuel-linequick-connect-fitting-removal) ).
  14. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose (A), the EVAP canister hose (B), and the breather hose (C), and remove the harness clamp (D).
  15. Remove the shift cable (see «SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ). Do not bend the shift cable excessively.
  16. Remove the drive belt (see «DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/charging-system/#charging-system-v6__drive-belt-replacement) ).
  17. Remove the steering wheel (see «STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-v6__steering-wheel-removal) ).
  18. Remove the steering joint cover (A).
  19. Make a reference mark (B) across the steering joint (C) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). Loosen the upper steering joint bolt (E) and remove the lower steering joint bolt (F), then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.
  20. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.
  21. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  22. Remove the front wheels.
  23. Remove the front splash shield (see «FRONT SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell-v6__front-splash-shield-replacement) ).
  24. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system-v6) ).
  25. Drain the ATF (see «ATF REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ).
  26. Drain the engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/lubrication-system/#engine-lubrication-v6) ).
  27. Remove the damper fork (see «STABILIZER BAR REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-v6) ).
  28. Separate the tie-rod end ball joints from the knuckles (see «INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/electronic-steering/#electronic-power-steering-eps-system-v6) ).
  29. Separate the knuckles from the suspension lower arms (see «UPPER ARM REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-v6__upper-arm-replacement) ).
  30. Remove the driveshafts (see «DRIVESHAFT INSPECTION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/axle-shafts/#drivelineaxle-v6) ). Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
  31. Remove exhaust pipe A.
  32. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  33. Remove the ground cable (A).
  34. Disconnect the ATF cooler hose (B) from the transmission, then plug the ATF cooler hose and the line.
  35. Disconnect the heater hoses.
  36. Remove the radiator (see «RADIATOR REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system-v6) ).
  37. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A) and remove the harness clamp (B), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively. NOTE: Hang the A/C compressor with a wire tie.
  38. Remove the bolt (A) securing the connector bracket (B) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.
  39. Remove the bolt (A) securing the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket (B) and the harness clamp bracket (C); use the bracket bolt hole (D) to attach the engine hanger balance bar rear arm.
  40. Lift and support the engine with the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) and the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with a spacer (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Attach the rear arm (D) to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (E) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (F).
  41. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (G) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission. NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield. Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead. AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking two cross section bars.
  42. Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) and remove the front engine mount stop (B), then remove the front engine mount bolt (C).
  43. Remove the rear engine mount stop (A), then remove the rear engine mount bolt (B).
  44. Disconnect the EPS motor angle sensor 6P connector (A).
  45. Disconnect the EPS motor 3P connector (B) by pushing the lock (C) and pulling down the lever (D). Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid the contamination from grease or water.
  46. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  47. Disconnect the ground cable connector at the front of the front subframe.
  48. Remove the subframe middle mount.
  49. Disconnect the EPS subharness 6P connector (A). Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid the contamination from grease or water.
  50. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.
  51. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).
  52. Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.
  53. Remove the six 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (A) securing the subframe stiffeners (B), the four subframe mounting bolts (C), and the stiffeners, then lower the front subframe (D).
  54. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  55. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the engine hook (B) and the transmission hook (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist and remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar.
  56. Remove the mounting bolts from the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.
  57. Remove the harness clamp (A), then remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts and nut. NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.
  58. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.
  59. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.
  60. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.
  61. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.

Engine Installation

  1. Install the engine mount brackets and the accessory brackets and tighten their bolts to the specified torque.
  2. Replace the upper transmission mount bolt (see «TRANSMISSION INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ).
  3. Position the engine/transmission under the vehicle. Be sure that they are properly aligned. Carefully lower the vehicle until the engine/transmission are properly positioned in the engine compartment. Make sure the vehicle is not resting on any part of the engine/transmission. Support the engine/transmission with a chain hoist (A) and carefully raise the engine/transmission into place. NOTE: Reinstall the mounting bolts/support nuts in the sequence given in the following steps. Failure to follow this sequence may cause excessive noise and vibration, and reduce engine mount life.
  4. Install the new mounting bolts into the upper half of the side engine mount bracket. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
  5. Tighten the new upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts and nut to the specified torque, then install the harness clamp (A). NOTE: If bolt (B) was removed by mistake during removal, the upper transmission mount bracket must be replaced as an assembly.
  6. Lift and support the engine with the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) and the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with a spacer (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Attach the rear arm (D) to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (E) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (F).
  7. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (G) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission. NOTE: Be careful when working around the windshield. Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead. AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking two cross section bars.
  8. Remove the chain hoist, then raise the vehicle on the lift.
  9. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).
  10. Line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts, then raise the front subframe up to the body.
  11. Loosely install the new front subframe mounting bolts (four) (A), the 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (two) (B), new bolts (two) (C), and the stiffeners (D).
  12. Loosely install the new subframe middle mount bolts (A).
  13. Loosely tighten the right-rear subframe mounting bolt (A) and the right-rear stiffener mounting bolt (B); insert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot (C) on the rear stiffener, through the positioning hole (D) on the subframe, and into the positioning hole (E) on the body, then tighten the subframe mounting bolt.
  14. Loosely tighten the left-rear subframe mounting bolt and the new left-rear stiffener mounting bolt using the same procedure as the right-rear with the subframe alignment pin.
  15. Loosely tighten the subframe mounting bolt (A) and the stiffener mounting bolt (B) on both sides to the front stiffener.
  16. Tighten the right-rear subframe mounting bolt (A) to the specified torque.
  17. Tighten the left-rear subframe mounting bolt (B) to the specified torque.
  18. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolts (C) to the specified torque. NOTE: Check all of the subframe mounting bolts, and retighten if necessary.
  19. Tighten the front stiffener mounting bolts (D) and the rear stiffener mounting bolts (E) to the specified torque. NOTE: Before tightening the stiffener mounting bolts, check that the positioning holes and slot are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.
  20. Remove the transmission jack and the subframe adapter.
  21. Tighten the bolts securing the subframe middle mount.
  22. Install the lower transmission mount nuts.
  23. Remove the vinyl tape, then connect the EPS subharness 6P connector (A).
  24. Connect the ground cable connector at the front of the front subframe.
  25. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  26. Remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar.
  27. Remove the vinyl tape, then connect the EPS motor 3P connector (A) by lock up the lever (B).
  28. Connector the EPS motor angle sensor 6P connector (C).
  29. Tighten the new rear engine mount bolt (A), then install the rear engine mount stop (B).
  30. Tighten the new front engine mount bolt (A), then install the front engine mount stop (B) using new nuts and connect the vacuum hose (C).
  31. Loosen the mounting bolts for the upper half of the side engine mount bracket, then retighten the bolts in the numbered sequence shown.
  32. Loosen the mounting bolts and nut for the upper transmission mount bracket, then retighten them to the specified torque.
  33. Install the connector bracket (A) to the front cylinder head.
  34. Install the harness clamp bracket (A), and the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket (B) to the rear cylinder head.
  35. Install the A/C compressor, then install the harness clamp (A) and connect the A/C compressor clutch connector (B).
  36. Install the radiator (see «RADIATOR REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system-v6) ).
  37. Connect the heater hoses.
  38. Connect the ATF cooler hose (A) to the transmission (see «ATF COOLER HOSE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ).
  39. Install the ground cable (B).
  40. Raise the vehicle on the lift.
  41. Install exhaust pipe A using new gaskets (B) and new self-locking nuts (C).
  42. Install a new set ring on the end of each driveshaft, then install the driveshafts (see «DRIVESHAFT INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/axle-shafts/#drivelineaxle-v6__driveshaft-installation) ). Make sure each ring "clicks" into place in the differential and the intermediate shaft.
  43. Connect the suspension lower arms to the knuckles (see «UPPER ARM REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-v6__upper-arm-replacement) ).
  44. Connect the tie-rod end ball joints to the knuckles (see «RACK END REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/electronic-steering/#electronic-power-steering-eps-system-v6) ).
  45. Install the damper fork (see «DAMPER/SPRING DISASSEMBLY, INSPECTION, AND REASSEMBLY»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/suspension-front/#front-suspension-v6) ).
  46. Install the front splash shield (see «FRONT SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exterior-body-panels/#fenderwell-v6__front-splash-shield-replacement) ).
  47. Install the front wheels.
  48. Lower the vehicle on the lift.
  49. Align the reference mark (A) on the steering joint (B) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (C). Connect the steering joint to the steering gearbox pinion shaft. Tighten the upper steering joint bolt (D) and the lower steering joint bolt (E).
  50. Install the steering joint cover (F).
  51. Install the steering wheel (see «STEERING WHEEL INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-v6__steering-wheel-installation) ).
  52. Install the drive belt (see «DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/charging-system/#charging-system-v6__drive-belt-replacement) ).
  53. Install the shift cable (see «SHIFT CABLE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ).
  54. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose (A), the EVAP canister hose (B), and the breather hose (C), and install the harness clamp (D).
  55. Connect the fuel feed hose (A) (see «FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-supply-system-v6__fuel-linequick-connect-fitting-installation) ), then install the quick-connect fitting cover (B).
  56. Connect the PCM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connector (B), then install the harness clamps (C) and the bracket. (D).
  57. Install the bolts (A) securing the PCM.
  58. Connect the battery cables (A) to the under-hood fuse/relay box.
  59. Install the strut brace (see «FRAME BRACE REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exterior-body-panels/#frame-v6) ).
  60. Install the battery base (A), then install the harness clamp (B) to the battery base.
  61. Install the air cleaner (see «THROTTLE BODY CLEANING»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/mechanical/#intake-air-system-v6__throttle-body-cleaning) ).
  62. Do the battery installation procedure (see «INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/body-electrical/#battery-v6) ).
  63. Install the intake air separator.
  64. Inspect for fuel leaks. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), (do not operate the starter) so the fuel pump runs for about 2 seconds and pressurizes the fuel line. Repeat this operation three times, then check for fuel leaks at any point in the fuel line.
  65. Refill the engine with the engine oil (see «ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/lubrication-system/#engine-lubrication-v6) ).
  66. Refill the transmission with ATF (see «ATF REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-v6) ).
  67. Move the shift lever to each gear, and verify that the A/T gear position indicator follows the transmission range switch.
  68. Refill the radiator with engine coolant, and bleed the air from the cooling system (see «COOLANT CHECK»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/cooling-fan/#engine-cooling-system-v6) ).
  69. Check for fluid leaks.
  70. Do the PCM reset procedure (see «IF THE MIL DID NOT STAY ON»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#fuel-and-emissions-systems-v6__if-the-mil-did-not-stay) ).
  71. Do the CKP pattern clear/CKP pattern learn procedure (see «CKP PATTERN CLEAR/CKP PATTERN LEARN»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#fuel-and-emissions-systems-v6) ).
  72. Inspect the idle speed (see «IDLE SPEED INSPECTION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/testing-diagnostics/#idle-control-system-v6__idle-speed-inspection) ).
  73. Inspect the ignition timing (see «IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/ignition-system/#ignition-system-v6) ).
  74. Install the engine compartment covers (see «ENGINE COMPARTMENT COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#exterior-trim-v6__engine-compartment-cover-replacement) ).
  75. Check the wheel alignment (see «WHEEL ALIGNMENT»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/wheel-alignment/#front-and-rear-suspension-v6__wheel-alignment) ).

  2. Lift and support the engine with a jack and a wood block under the oil pan.
  3. Remove the ground cable (A), then remove the upper half of the side engine mount bracket (B).
  4. Remove the side engine mount.

  2. Loosely install the upper half of the side engine mount bracket (A) using new bolts.
  3. Remove the jack and the wood block.

  2. Remove the front warm up TWC (see «WARM UP TWC REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/tsx/ii-2008-2014/remont/exhaust/#catalytic-converter-system-v6) ).
  3. Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the front engine mount bolt (B).
  4. Lift and support the engine with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission.
  5. Remove the front engine mount mounting bolts (A).
