Front Seat Removal/Installation

Note. Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when prying components. Take care not to scratch the body or tear the seat covers. Put on gloves to protect your hands. DTC codes will set if the ignition is turned ON (II) with the seats removed.

  1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system.
  2. Tilt the steering wheel all the way up, and telescope it all the way in.
  3. Slide the front seat forward fully, and remove the anchor cover (A).
  4. Remove the lower anchor bolt (A).
  5. Raise the seat fully, and slide it halfway to the rear so you can access the seat mounting bolts.
  6. Slide the seat all the way forward, and remove the seat track end covers (A), then remove the bolts.
  7. Slide the seat all the way back, and remove the bolts securing the front seat (A).
  8. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before removing the seat.
  9. Lift up the front seat, then detach the harness clip (A), and disconnect the power seat harness connector (B) and the side airbag connector (C). Disconnect the seat position sensor connector (D) on the driver's seat or the OPDS unit connector (E) and seat weight sensor connector (F) on the passenger's seat. Driver's Passenger's
  10. With the help of an assistant, carefully remove the front seat through the front door opening.
  11. Install the seat in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Apply liquid thread lock to the seat mounting bolts before reinstallation. Tighten the seat mounting bolts to the specified torque in the sequence shown. Slide the seat all the way back and tighten (1) and (2), then slide it forward and tighten (3) and (4). Make sure each connector is plugged in properly. Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten them to specification with a torque wrench. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery. Enter the anti-theft codes for the audio system and the navigation system. Reset the power window control unit (see «RESETTING THE POWER WINDOW CONTROL UNIT»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/windows/#power-windows__resetting-the-power-window-control-unit) ): Do the steering column position memorization (see «STEERING COLUMN POSITION MEMORIZATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/manual-power-steering/#power-steering-system-electronic-power-steering-system__steering-column-position-memorization) ).

Front Seat Disassembly/Reassembly

Seat-back/Seat Cushion

Note. Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when prying components. Take care not to tear the seams or damage the seat covers. Put on gloves to protect your hands. DTC codes will set it the ignition is turned ON (II) with the seats removed.

  1. Remove the front seat (see «FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__front-seat-removalinstallation) ).
  2. Remove the screw and release the hooks (A), tab (B), and pin (C), then remove the front cover (D).
  3. Remove the recline cover (A). Remove the screw and detach the tabs (B). Pull up the cover, then detach the hooks (C). Disconnect the recline switch and up-down switch connector (D), lumbar support switch connector (E). Remove the wire harness (F) from the hooks (G).
  4. Remove the center cover (A). Release the tabs (B). Pull up the cover, then detach the hook (C).
  5. From under the seat cushion, disconnect the seat harness connector (A). Detach the side airbag connector clip (B), the OPDS unit connector clip (C) on the passenger's seat. Release the hook springs (D) and seat cushion cover (E), pull the cover back, and remove the wire ties (F). Driver's Passenger's
  6. Remove the seat-back (A). Remove the head restraint (B). Remove the seat cushion trim cover (C) from hook (D). Remove the bolts. Lift the seat-back, then pull the side airbag harness (E), seat harness (F) and OPDS harness on passenger's seat, out through the hole in the seat cushion trim cover.
  7. Assemble the seat-back and seat cushion in the reverse order of disassembly, and note these items: Check if the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, and if necessary, replace them with new ones. Push the clips into place securely. Apply multipurpose grease to the moving parts of the seat track. To prevent wrinkles in the seat cushion cover, stretch the material evenly over the pad. The passenger's seat is shown; the driver's seat is similar.

Seat-back

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations (see COMPONENT LOCATION INDEX ) and the precautions and procedures (see PRECAUTIONS AND PROCEDURES ) before doing repairs or service.

Note. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Replace the push nuts with new ones. Make sure the push nuts are installed correctly. Apply liquid thread lock to the motor mounting bolt before reinstallation.

Seat Cushion - Driver's Seat

  1. The operation of the driver's seat position sensor must be checked after any of these actions (see «DRIVER'S SEAT POSITION SENSOR OPERATION CHECK»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/airbag/#srs-supplemental-restraint-system__drivers-seat-position-sensor-operation-check) ): Driver's seat position sensor replacement Cover plate (front side of driver's seat slide rail) replacement

Note. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Apply oil to the pivot portions of the slide lock. Apply multipurpose grease to the sliding parts and pivot portions of the seat tracks.

Seat Cushion - Passenger's Seat

  1. The front passenger's weight sensor (SWS) unit must be calibrated after any of these actions (see «FRONT PASSENGER'S WEIGHT SENSOR UNIT CALIBRATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/airbag/#srs-supplemental-restraint-system__front-passengers-weight-sensor-unit-calibration) ): Front passenger's seat replacement (including any seat components) Replacement of the seat weight sensors Replacement of the front passenger's weight sensor unit

Note. Put on gloves to protect your hands. Apply oil to the pivot portions of the slide locks. Apply multipurpose grease to the sliding parts of the seat tracks. When tightening the weight sensor mounting bolts, tighten the bolts in the sequence shown. Improper tightening could cause the front passenger's airbag system to malfunction. Make sure the weight sensor unit connectors are plugged in properly. Make sure the weight sensor wires are routed properly so they are not pinched and do not interfere with other parts.

Driver's Seat

  1. The operation of the driver's seat position sensor must be checked after any of these actions (see «DRIVER'S SEAT POSITION SENSOR OPERATION CHECK»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/airbag/#srs-supplemental-restraint-system__drivers-seat-position-sensor-operation-check) ): Driver's seat position sensor replacement Cover plate (front side of driver's seat slide rail) replacement

Passenger's Seat

  1.   1. Remove these items: Back panel (see step 3 ) Center cover (see step 4 )
  2. Driver's: Release the hooks (A), then turn over the seat-back cover (B). Disconnect the power lumbar support motor connector (C), then release the harness band (D).
  3. Passenger's: Release the hooks (A), then turn over the seat-back cover (B). Detach the hooks (C), then remove the OPDS unit cover (D). Disconnect the OPDS unit sensor connector (E) and power lumbar support motor connector (F), then release the harness band (G).
  4. Release the hook of the yoke wire (A) from the top of the basket (B) to loosen the lumbar support cable (C), then disconnect it.
  5. Release both lower springs (A) from inside the seat-back. Release the lumbar support from both upper springs (B).
  6. Pull out the duct (A) from the seat-back pad (B). A.
  7. Driver's: Pull back the seat-back cover (A) and seat-back pad (B), then remove the bolts.
  8. Passenger's: Pull back the seat-back cover (A) and seat-back pad (B), then remove the bolts (C) and screw (D).
  9. Release the wire tie (A), then remove the lumbar support cable (B) and motor (C) as an assembly.
  10. Install the lumbar support in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Make sure the cable is connected securely. To prevent wrinkles when installing a seat-back cover, make sure the material is stretched evenly over the pad before securing the hook strips. Replace the back panel clips with new ones. Replace the metal clips with new ones.

Front Seat-back Cover Replacement

  1. Remove the seat-back (see «SEAT-BACK/SEAT CUSHION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__seat-backseat-cushion) ).
  2. Remove the head restraint.
  3. Detach the clips and hooks (A) by pulling the bottom of the back panel (B) back, then gently pull down the panel to release the hooks (C) from the seat-back frame, and remove the panel.
  4. Release the hooks (A), then loosen the seat-back cover (B).
  5. Pull the recline motor harness (A), seat-back heater harness (B), side airbag harness (C) and the OPDS harness (D) (passenger's seat) out through the holes (E) in the seat-back cover. Driver's seat-back Passenger's seat-back
  6. Passenger's: Release the hooks (A), then turn over the seat back cover (B). Detach the hooks (C), then remove the OPDS unit cover (D). Disconnect the OPDS unit sensor connectors (E), then release the harness band (F).
  7. Pull out the duct (A) from seat-back pad (B).
  8. Release the front hook (A) and rear hook (B) of the reinforcing cloth (C) from seat-back frame (D).
  9. Pull out the head restraint guides (A) while pinching the tabs on the end of the guides, and remove them.
  10. Remove the seat-back cover (A) and seat-back pad (B) from the seat-back frame (C).
  11. Pass both lower retainers (A) through the slots in the seat-back pad.
  12. Pull back the edge of the seat-back cover all the way around, and release the clips (A), then remove the seat-back cover.
  13. Install the cover in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Reinitialize the OPDS control unit (see «OPDS UNIT INITIALIZATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/airbag/#srs-supplemental-restraint-system__opds-unit-initialization) ). To prevent wrinkles when installing a seat-back cover, make sure the material is stretched evenly over the pad before securing the clips, hooks, and hook strips. Replace any clips you removed with new ones (A). Install them with commercially available upholstery ring pliers (B). Reinstall the front hook (C) and rear hook (D) of the reinforcing cloth (E) securely. Use only original Acura replacement seat-back covers. Make sure the recline motor harness, side airbag harness, seat-back heater harness, and OPDS unit harness (passenger's seat) are routed properly.

Front Seat Cushion Cover Replacement

  1. Remove the front seat (see «FRONT SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__front-seat-removalinstallation) ).
  2. From under the seat cushion, detach the recline motor connector clip, the side airbag connector clip and the seat heater connector clip. Release the seat cushion cover from the seat cushion frame spring, then pull the cover back, and remove the clamps.
  3. Remove the seat-back (see «SEAT-BACK/SEAT CUSHION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__seat-backseat-cushion) ).
  4. Release the hook strips (A) from both sides of the seat cushion. Outside Inside
  5. Release the clips (A) and hooks (B), and disconnect the seat cushion heater connectors (C), then detach the connectors and harness clip (D), and pull back the seat cushion trim cover (E).
  6. Remove the silencer (A) and seat cushion pad (B) from the seat cushion frame (C).
  7. Pull back the seat cushion cover (A), and release the clips (B) from under the seat cushion.
  8. Pull back the edge of the seat cushion cover all the way around, and release the clips (A), then remove the seat cushion cover.
  9. Install the cover in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: To prevent wrinkles when installing a seat cushion cover, make sure the material is stretched evenly over the pad before securing the clips and hook strips. Replace any clips you removed with new ones (A). Install them with commercially available upholstery ring pliers (B).

Front Seat Head Restraint Cover Replacement

  4. Disconnect the connector (A), then remove the blower motor/duct (B) from the seat-back frame.
  5. Remove the clips, then separate the duct (A, B) and blower motor (C).
  6. Install the blower motor/duct in the reverse order of removal. NOTE: Check if the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, and if necessary, replace them with new ones.

  2. Remove the front seat cushion cover (see «FRONT SEAT CUSHION COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__front-seat-cushion-cover-replacement) ).
  3. Disconnect the blower motor connector (A), then remove the connector from the bracket.
  4. Remove the screws, and release the hooks (A) from cushion frame wire, then remove the blower motor/duct (B).
  5. Remove the clips, then separate the duct (A) and blower motor (B).
  6. Install the blower motor/duct in the reverse order of removal. NOTE: Check if the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, and if necessary, replace them with new ones.

Seat Cushion Front Blower Motor

  3. Disconnect the blower motor connector (A) and remove the screws, then remove the blower motor (B) from the duct.
  4. Install the blower motor in the reverse order of removal.

  4. Remove the screws, then remove the duct (A).
  5. Install the duct in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Pull the seat hook knobs (A) while pushing down on the seat cushion (B), to release the hooks (C).
  2. Remove the seat cushion (A), and release the center seat belt buckles (B) from their slits (C).
  3. Release the seat belt (A) from their guides (B).
  4. Remove the rear center seat belt and rear seat belt buckles (see step 2 under «CENTER SEAT BELT AND SEAT BELT BUCKLES»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/restraints-control-systems/#seat-belts) ).
  5. Remove the bolts from the base of the seat-back (A).
  6. Disconnect the power head restraint connector (B).
  7. Lift the seat-back (A) up to release the wire loops (B) from the hooks (C) on the body, then remove the seat-back.
  8. Install the seat in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Guide the belts over the front of the seat-back as you install it. Before attaching the rear seat-back and cushion, make sure there are no twists or kinks in the seat belts. When installing the seat cushion, slip the seat belt buckles through the slits in the seat cushion.

Rear Seat Armrest Beverage Holder Replacement

  2. Remove the screws, then pull out on the beverage holder (A) to release the hooks (B).
  3. Install the beverage holder in the reverse order of removal.

  2. Open the trunk pass-through cover (A), and remove the screws, then separate the armrest cover (B) from the trunk pass-through cover.
  3. Remove the screws, and detach the hooks (A), then remove the upper cover (B). Remove the spring (C).
  4. Release the Velcro fastener (A), then pull back the upper flap (B). Remove the screws, then remove the trunk pass-through lid (C).
  5. Remove the bolts (A) and screws (B), and remove the armrest (C) from the seat-back frame.
  6. Install the armrest in the reverse order of removal.

Trunk Pass-through Lid Lock Cylinder Replacement

  2. Remove the screws, and detach the hooks (A), then remove the upper cover (B).
  3. Remove the screws, and detach the hook (A), then remove the lock cover (B), and release the hook (C).
  4. Remove the retainer clip (A), then remove the trunk pass-through lid lock cylinder (B) from the lid (C). NOTE: Wear eye protection when doing this step.
  5. Install the lock cylinder in the reverse order of removal, and make sure the trunk pass-through lid opens properly and locks securely.

  1. Remove the rear seat-back (see «REAR SEAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__rear-seat-removalinstallation) ).
  2. Remove the seat-back cover/pad (see «REAR SEAT-BACK COVER REPLACEMENT»(/acura/rl/ii-2004-2008/remont/seats/#seats__rear-seat-back-cover-replacement) ).
  3. Disconnect the connector (A), and detach it from the seat-back frame. Detach the wire harness clip (B), and remove the harness band (C) (right side head restraint only).
  4. Remove the retainers (A) from both head restraint guides (B), then remove the head restraint (C). Remove both head restraint guides.
  5. Install the head restraint in the reverse order of removal.

Rear Seat Head Restraint Actuator/Wire Harness Replacement

  2. Detach the hooks (A), and release the hooks (B), then remove the head restraint case (C) from the head restraint (D).
  3. Remove the actuator wire harness (A). Detach the hooks (B), then remove the guide (C). Remove the connector clip (D) from the connector (E). Remove the head restraint pillar trim (F). Disconnect the actuator connector (G), and detach the harness clip (H) from the head restraint base (I).
  4. Carefully remove the foam as needed from the frame. Remove the screws, and release the arm (A) from the hook (B), then remove the actuator (C).
  5. Install the actuator and wire harness in the reverse order of removal.

Rear Seat-back Upper Flap Replacement

  6. Pull back the edge of the seat-back cover (A) all the way around, and release the clips (B), then remove the seat-back cover.
  7. Install the cover in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: To prevent wrinkles when installing a seat-back cover, make sure the material is stretched evenly over the pad before securing the hook strips, and clips. Replace any clips you removed with new ones. Install them with commercially available upholstery ring pliers.

  4. Remove the E clips (A), then remove the brackets (B) from both sides of the armrest (C).
  5. If necessary, remove the bushings (D) from the brackets.
  6. Release the hooks (A).
  7. Pull back the armrest cover (A) all the way around, and release the Velcro fasteners (B), then separate the armrest cover and pad (C).
  8. Install the cover in the reverse order of removal, and to prevent wrinkles, make sure the material is stretched evenly over the pad before securing the hooks strips and fastener.

  2. Unzip the head restraint cover (A), pull it back, and remove it.
  3. Separate the double-sided adhesive tapes (A), then remove the head restraint pad (B) and head restraint pad molding (C) from the head restraint frame (D).
  4. Scrape off the remaining double-sided adhesive tape from the head restraint frame, then clean its surface with a sponge dampened in alcohol.
  5. Install the cover and pads in the reverse order of removal.
