Checking Supply

Check passenger compartment fuse 24 (11C/24:2).

Check the cable between combined instrument panel supply relay (2/29) terminal #3 and passenger compartment fuse 24 (11C/24:2). Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults . Check for a short-circuit to ground according to Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults .

Check that the relay is not defective.

Check the cable between combined instrument panel terminal #6 and parking brake connector terminal #1 for a short-circuit to ground according to Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults .

Check the cable between combined instrument panel terminal #1 and combined instrument panel supply relay (2/29) terminal #1. Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults . Check for a short-circuit to ground according to Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults .

Check the cable between combined instrument panel terminal #14 and ground. Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults . Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Short-circuit to supply voltage. Permanent faults .

Remedy as necessary

  1. Ignition off
  2. Control module disconnected
  3. Switch off all power consuming equipment (courtesy lighting, radio Etc). Connect an ohmmeter between terminal #14 on the breakout box and the battery negative terminal. For information about signals, see «Driver Information Module (DIM) signal description»(ref-406836-S05974644112011070100000) .

The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms.

  1. OK OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NOT OK Refer to «Checking for open-circuits, contact resistance and oxidation»(ref-406835-S05836200502011070100000)

Checking For Open-Circuits, Contact Resistance And Oxidation

Check ground terminal 31/83. Check for an open-circuit according to Open-circuit, permanent faults . Check for contact resistance and oxidation according to Contact resistance and oxidation .

Checking the Power Supply

Check interior fuse 24 (11C/24:2).

Check the wire between combined instrument power supply relay (2/29) 3 and interior fuse 24 (11C/24:2) for an open circuit as described in Open-circuit, intermittent faults , and for a short circuit to ground as described in Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults .

Check that the relay is not defective.

Check and measure wire between combined instrument 6 and hand-brake contact 1 for a short circuit to ground as described in Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults .

Check the wire between combined instrument 1 and combined instrument power supply relay (2/29) 1 for an open circuit as described in Open-circuit, intermittent faults , and a short circuit to ground as described in Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults .

Check the wire between combined instrument 14 and ground for an open circuit as described in Open-circuit, intermittent faults , and for a short circuit to voltage supply as described in Short-circuit to supply voltage, intermittent faults .

Do the necessary corrective action.

Checking the Ground Terminals

  1. Ignition off.
  2. Control unit disconnected.
  3. Switch off all battery loadings such as entrance lighting and radio. Connect an ohmmeter between the battery negative lead and test box 14. The ohmmeter should display approximately 0 ohms.

  1. OK OKAY: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NOT OK Refer to «Checking for open circuits, contact resistance and oxidation.»(ref-406835-S26306978162011070100000)

Check ground points 53/400 and 31/83 for an open circuit as described in Open-circuit, intermittent faults , and for contact resistance and oxidation as described in Contact resistance and oxidation .

Checking the Power Supply And Ground Terminals

Voltage supply, driver information module (DIM)

The driver information module (DIM) is powered via a power input on the driver information module (DIM).

Power input terminal #A3 is powered via a fuse from the central electronic module (CEM). The driver information module (DIM) will not be activated if there is an open-circuit.

Checking the power supply

Check the power supply cable from the battery to the central electronic module (CEM) and from the central electronic module (CEM) to driver information module (DIM) terminal #A3. Check for an open-circuit. Check for loose connections. Check for contact resistance. Check for oxidation. Check the fuse. The voltage must be approximately battery voltage when the ignition is on.

Ground terminal, driver information module (DIM)

The driver information module (DIM) has a ground input. The ground input from the control module is connected via a ground lead to the ground terminal in the car body. See the relevant appropriate wiring diagram for further information about the ground terminals in the bodywork.

  1. Ground input terminal #A4 is signal ground and is connected to the ground terminal in the car body.

Checking the ground terminal

Check the ground lead between control module terminal #A4 and the ground terminal. Check for an open-circuit. Check for loose connections. Check for contact resistance. Check for oxidation. With the ignition on, the drop in voltage between the ground connection for the control module and the ground terminal must not be greater than 0.5 V.

Remedy as necessary.

Connecting the Breakout Box

  1. Ignition off
  2. Remove the fuse
  3. Remove the driver information module (DIM)
  4. Disconnect the control module connector.

Connect adapter 9512901 to the control module connector. Connect breakout box 9511428 and wiring 9511499 to the adapter.

Alternatively, breakout box 9813190 can be connected to the adapter.

Disconnect the breakout box in reverse order.
