BRAKE WARNING LIGHT
The brake warning light indicates that the brake fluid level is too low. The brake warning light also indicates faults in the Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) function. If brake warning light is on, check brake fluid level first. If fluid level is okay, there may a fault in the anti-lock brake system.
BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH
The stop (brake) light switch is a single pole switch positioned at the brake pedal lever. It self-adjusts during installation.
MANUAL BLEEDING
Note. Before bleeding brakes, ensure ignition is off. Clean around brake fluid reservoir filler cap before removing. Top-off brake fluid reservoir as necessary.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove protective cap from left front bleed nipple.
- Connect the hose from collection bottle.
- Depress brake pedal a few times. Maintain pressure.
- Open left front bleed nipple.
- Depress brake pedal fully. Keep it fully depressed for approximately 5 seconds. Release it again.
- Repeat this 3-5 times until there are no air bubbles in fluid coming out of hose.
- Tighten bleed nipple.
- Remove hose from bleed nipple. Install protective cap.
- Repeat procedure for right front, left rear and right rear brakes. See «BRAKE BLEEDING SEQUENCE»(ref-160726-S07651623312004022600000) table.

BRAKE BLEEDING SEQUENCE
PRESSURE BLEEDING
Note. Before bleeding brakes, ensure ignition is off. Clean around brake fluid reservoir filler cap before removing. Top-off brake fluid reservoir as necessary.
- Take out special brake fluid collection bottle.
- Connect pressure bleeder to brake fluid reservoir. (Scheme 40) Follow manufacturers instructions for connecting and using bleeding unit.
- Pressurize brake system. Check brake fluid reservoir connector.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels.
- Remove protective cap from left front bleed nipple.
- Connect hose from collection bottle.
- Open left front bleed nipple. Close it when there are no more air bubbles in fluid coming out of hose.
- Tighten bleed nipple.
- Remove hose from bleed nipple. Reinstall protective cap.
- Repeat procedure for right front, left rear and right rear brakes. See «BRAKE BLEEDING SEQUENCE»(ref-160726-S07651623312004022600000) table.
- Check for leakage from bleed nipples.
- Close valve on pressure line. Open a nipple and close it again.
- Check for air in brake system and for brake fluid leakage.

PARKING/EMERGENCY BRAKE
| CAUTION | Do not adjust too much at one time, as binding of rear brakes can occur. |
- Remove dust boot on parking brake lever by pulling straight up. Fold up plastic cover.
- Identify adjustment nut. (Scheme 41) Adjust parking brake to fully applied between second and fifth click on parking brake ratchet.

| CAUTION | Always disconnect the battery negative lead first. DO NOT disconnect positive lead in engine compartment first. |
| WARNING | The key must be in position No. 2 when the battery cable is connected. No one must be in vehicle when battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an airbag module activates when power is connected. |
Note. If the vehicle has a heater with remote starting, the personal code is reset to the factory default (1234) if the battery is disconnected or the power is cut.
All vehicles are equipped with an anti-theft stereo system that requires a code to activate. Record stereo code BEFORE disconnecting negative battery cable. Disconnect negative battery cable.
Connecting Cable
Turn ignition to position II. Reconnect negative battery cable. Enter code into stereo and reset clock. Check that the SRS warning light on the dashboard goes out.
Initialize the Upper Electronic Module (UEM). Initialize the central locking, interior lighting and sun roof by unlocking the car using a remote control, key or VADIS vehicle communication.
Calibrate the blower fan. If the car is equipped with manual or standard climate control, the blower fan speed must recalibrated if the battery has been disconnected. Turn ignition on. Turn the blower fan switch to maximum. Turn the blower fan switch to minimum. The calibration is complete.
Calibrate the sun roof. The sun roof must be closed. Press the sun roof switch so that the sun roof is in the tilt position. Release the switch. Press the button again for at least five seconds. Release the switch. The calibration is complete.
Preparation
Remove the mounting bolts for the torque rod. see scheme 16 Remove the bolt and nut for the engine mounting in the torque rod. Remove the torque rod.
Power Booster Function Check
- Depress the brake pedal several times to vent vacuum from booster. Brake pedal will feel hard when all vacuum is released.
- Hold brake pedal down and start engine. Pedal should move down and feel softer.
- Release brake pedal and turn engine off. Wait 1 minute then depress brake pedal. Pedal should still feel soft but should become stiffer after it is depressed several times.
- Ensure no leakage is present between vacuum hose and fitting at power brake booster. Ensure no leakage is present between master cylinder and power brake booster.
- If vacuum is present at check valve, replace power brake booster if pedal feels hard and unresponsive when engine is idling. See «POWER BRAKE BOOSTER»(ref-160726-S16466090312004022600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
Front Wheel Hub
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel to be measured.
- Remove mounting screws for brake caliper holder. Hang caliper from spring using a wire.
- Remove brake disc.
- Install bracket included in Measurement Tool Set (999 5418). (Scheme 42)
- Install dial indicator in the bracket. (Scheme 42)
- Place dial indicator point against hub flange. (Scheme 43)
- Rotate hub and note dial indicator run-out. If lateral run-out exceeds specifications, replace hub. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S40900266712004022600000).
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten brake disc locating pin and brake caliper holder to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S16242453732004022600000).

Rear Wheel Hub
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel to be measured.
- Remove mounting screws for brake caliper holder. Hang brake caliper from spring using a wire.
- Remove brake disc.
- Install bracket included in the Measurement Tool Set (999 5418).
- Install dial indicator in the bracket. (Scheme 44)
- Place dial indicator point against hub flange. (Scheme 45)
- Rotate hub and note dial indicator lateral run-out. If lateral run-out exceeds specifications, replace hub. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S40900266712004022600000).
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten brake disc locating pin and brake caliper holder to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S16242453732004022600000).

- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel to be measured.
- Remove mounting screw for brake caliper holder. Hang brake caliper from spring using a wire.
- Install Clamp Ring (999 5419) included in Measurement Tool Set (999 5418) on hub. (Scheme 46)
- Secure clamp ring using wheel lug nuts.
- Ensure mating surfaces on brake disc and clamp ring are clean and free of rust.
- Tighten studs lightly, then tighten crosswise to 81 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).
- Install bracket for upper mounting hole first. (Scheme 47)
- Press bracket against constant velocity joint housing.
- Install lower mounting screw in hole. At the same time, secure bracket using lower screw and tighten.
- Install dial indicator in the bracket. (Scheme 48)
- Place dial indicator point against brake disc. (Scheme 49)
- Rotate brake disc and note dial indicator lateral run-out.
- Brake disc lateral runout must not exceed specifications. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S40900266712004022600000). If lateral run-out exceeds this value, replace brake disc.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new bolts on caliper holder and tighten to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S16242453732004022600000).

- Remove the mounting screw for the brake caliper holder. Hang the brake caliper from the spring using a wire.
- Install Clamp Ring (999 5419) included in Measurement Tool Set (999 5418) on hub. (Scheme 46)
- Secure clamp ring using wheel lug nuts.
- Ensure mating surfaces on brake disc and clamp ring are clean and free of rust.
- Tighten studs lightly, then tighten crosswise to 81 ft. lbs. (110 N.m).
- Install the bracket on the mounting hole for the brake caliper.
- Install the dial indicator in the bracket. (Scheme 50)
- Place dial indicator point against the brake disc. (Scheme 51)
- Rotate brake disc and note dial indicator lateral run-out.
- Brake disc lateral run-out must not exceed specifications. See «DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S40900266712004022600000). If lateral run-out exceeds the value, replace the brake disc. See «REAR BRAKE DISC»(ref-160726-S04731451362004022600000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Use new screws on caliper holder and torque to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-160726-S16242453732004022600000).

FRONT BRAKE CALIPER

MASTER CYLINDER
| WARNING | Never under any circumstances, disassemble the master cylinder. Reassembling requires special equipment and facilities. |
| CAUTION | Relieve the check valve in the power brake booster; alternatively pump the brake pedal until it has no travel. This is so that no vacuum remains when the master cylinder is removed. |
Note. Place shop rags under master cylinder to protect the paint work.
