1. Ignition off
2. Remove the security strap around the engine control module (ECM). Remove the control module from the bracket. See «Engine control module (ECM), replacing»(ref-452422-S12655868802012021500000)
3. Disconnect the engine control module (ECM)
4. Disconnect the control module
5. To avoid interfering with the pedals, the cable harness with the control module connector must be pulled over to the right of the center console (left-hand drive) or to the left of the center console (right-hand drive). The connector must be put on the floor
6. Check that the male and female terminals in the control module and the control module connector are intact and secure. Check that the wiring to the female terminals is properly secured to the pins
7. In particular, check the terminal pins relevant to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) / symptom
8. Connect adapter «9511358»(ref-403953-S05682908082011061500000) to the engine control module (ECM) connector. Connect breakout box «9813190»(ref-403953-S32930552542011061000000) to the adapter.

1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Remove the upper screws (2 pcs.) that hold the engine control module bracket.
3. Remove the front and right splash guard.

1. Remove the lower screws (2 pcs.) that hold the engine control module bracket.
2. Lift up the control module from the engine compartment.

1. Remove the screws (7 pcs.) for the casing.
2. Remove the shear screws (A) (2 pcs.) with special tool «9985447»(ref-403953-S38601191382011061500000) and remove the safety brace (C).
3. Remove the screws (B) (2 pcs.) and lift away the engine control module from its base.
4. Disconnect the connectors. NOTE: Pay attention to drill burrs.

Note. Always check the control module and connector on the engine control module (ECM) so that there are no bent or damaged pins. This may have caused the problem.

Scheme 140

1. Plug in the connectors and check so that they are connected correctly.
2. Install the engine control module and install the cable clamp.
3. Install both screws (B) and tighten with fingers.
4. Install the safety brace (C) with 2 new shear screws, tighten with fingers.
5. Tighten the screws (B) with 10 Nm and the shear screws (2 pcs.) until the screw heads break off.
6. Check that the casing's seal is positioned correctly and is intact.
7. Install the casing and tighten the screws.

Installing engine control module bracket

1. Install the bracket and tighten the screws (4 pcs.).

Ordering software

Connect VIDA-station to car.

Select car model, model year, engine alternative and enter chassis number in car profile.

Order software according to description in 30620731 .

Information concerning B4184S and B4204S

From and including May 1997 there is only one replacement part engine control module (ECM) for each type of engine. These engine control modules (ECM) applies to both cars without, and for earlier cars, cars with pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

The engine control module (ECM) no longer controls the secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump when it is fitted to cars with manual transmission and pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) pump.

These cars however still meet the statutory requirement for emission levels.

Scheme 141

1. Remove the side panels from center console.
2. Drill out the security screws to the right of the bracket with screwdriver (P/N 998 5477). NOTE: Ensure that no dust/debris falls onto the carpet.
3. Pull out the right-hand side of the bracket.
4. Remove the engine control module (ECM) from its clamp and disconnect the connector.

Before replacing the engine control module with a new one, the Verlog code of the old module has to be erased. The code is erased through VIDA which is used for communication with the immobilizer system through VCT 2000. If the code is not erased, the control module cannot be checked if it is returned due to a warranty claim, or if it is to be moved to another car. This is caused by the module having learnt the Verlog code generated by the immobilizer system of the car in which the module has been placed. When that has been done, the engine control module can only work together with that specific immobilizer system, as long as the Verlog code in the module is not erased.

Note. The Verlog-code can only be erased using the particular immobilizer- control module whose Verlog-code the engine control module (ECM) has learned.

Erase the Verlog code in the engine control module using VIDA. The PIN code is supplied by Volvo's central vehicle register. PIN codes are ordered in the same way as mechanical key codes.

Note. Keep the ignition switched off after erasure until the engine control module (ECM)) has been removed from the car. Otherwise the engine control module (ECM) will relearn the Verlog code.

Reinstall

1. Reinstall bracket and press together.
2. Install a new security screw.
3. Tighten the security screw until the screw head breaks off.
