ENGINE OIL

Note. The oil level must not go above the MAX mark - danger of causing damage to the catalytic converter! Marks, refer to ENGINE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .

Scheme 29: OIL FILTER BRACKET AND OIL COOLER OVERVIEW
  1. Gasket Always replace.
  2. Bolt 15 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn. Always replace. First, tighten the upper left and lower right bolts, then tighten all 4 bolts in a diagonal sequence.
  3. Oil Filter Bracket Make sure there is enough space to the surrounding components.
  4. Seal Always replace.
  5. Connection 30 Nm
  6. Oil Supply Line 22 Nm Removing and installing, refer to «OIL SUPPLY LINE TO TURBOCHARGER»(ref-481034-S40193588772012061900000) . To the turbocharger.
  7. Oil Pressure Switch -F1- 22 Nm Identification: brown 0.7 bar If the sealing ring is leaking cut it off and replace it. Checking, refer to «OIL PRESSURE AND SWITCH, CHECKING»(ref-481034-S29009119702012061900000) .
  8. Cap 25 Nm
  9. O-ring Always replace
  10. Oil Filter Element Observe the change intervals.
  11. Seal Always replace Lubricate with oil before installing. Snaps into the tabs on the oil cooler.
  12. Oil Cooler Make sure there is enough space to the surrounding components. See the note in «OIL PUMP AND OIL PAN OVERVIEW»(ref-481034-S35122468952012061900000) . Oil cooler, checking for leaks. Refer to «OIL COOLER, CHECKING FOR LEAKS»(ref-480924-S21438993132012061900000) . Coolant hose connection diagram. Refer to «COOLANT HOSE CONNECTION DIAGRAM»(ref-480924-S33593852222012061900000) .
  13. Seal Always replace.
  14. Cover 25 Nm
  15. Bolt 10 Nm
  16. Bracket For the wiring harness.

OIL PRESSURE AND SWITCH, CHECKING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Oil Pressure Gauge V.A.G 1342
  2. Voltage Tester V.A.G 1527/B
  3. Connector Test Set V.A.G 1594 C
  4. Socket 24 mm and Jointed Extension T40175

Oil Pressure Switch -F1-, CHECKING

Test Conditions

  1. The engine oil level is OK. Checking, refer to «ENGINE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING»(ref-481034-S17575427922012061900000) .
  2. Engine oil temperature is at least 80 °C (176 °F) (coolant fan must start up once).

Remove the oil pressure switch - brown insulation- using the socket 24 mm and jointed extension T40175 and install it into the tester.

Thread the oil pressure gauge into the oil filter bracket in place of the oil pressure switch.

Connect the brown wire from the tester to ground (-).

Connect the voltage tester V.A.G 1527B using an adapter cable from the connector test set V.A.G 1594 C to battery positive (+) and the oil pressure switch. The Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.

Start the engine and slowly increase the engine speed. The LED must illuminate at 0.55 to 0.85 bar. Replace the oil pressure switch if it does not.

OIL PRESSURE, CHECKING

Increase the engine speed further. At 2000 RPM and with the oil temperature at 80 °C (176 °F), the oil pressure must be a minimum 2.0 bar.

At higher engine speeds, the oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar. If necessary, replace the oil filter bracket.

OIL FILTER BRACKET WITH OIL COOLER

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Assembly Tool T10118
  2. Drip Tray

Removing

Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING OVERVIEW .

Drain the coolant. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING .

Remove the fan shroud and fans. Refer to FAN SHROUD AND FANS .

Free up the wiring harnesses -arrows- and the connector -1- on the hot side charge air pipe.

Remove the bolt -1- and remove the wiring bracket.

Disconnect the coolant hoses from the oil cooler.

Loosen the clamp -2-, lift the circlip -1- and remove the cold side charge air hose from the charge air cooler.

Remove the bolts -arrows- from the charge air pipe and then disconnect the connector -1- from the charge air pressure sensor -G31-.

Open the clamp -2-, free up the coolant hose -3- and remove the charge air pipe.

Remove the bolt -arrow- and move the engine coolant circulation pump 2 -V178- to the side.

Remove the charge air hose -item 13- in the CHARGE AIR COOLER COMPONENTS OVERVIEW .

Remove the bolts -arrows- for the oil dipstick tube.

Remove the guide tube from the crankshaft housing and move it to the side.

Disconnect the connector -1- from the oil pressure switch -F1- using the assembly tool T10118 and remove the oil pressure switch.

Remove the oil supply line -3- from the oil filter bracket. Counter hold it with an open end wrench.

Place a drip tray under the engine.

Remove the oil filter bracket bolts -arrows- and oil filter bracket.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order while noting the following

  1. Replace all seals and O-rings.
  2. Oil filter bracket tightening specification, refer to «OIL FILTER BRACKET AND OIL COOLER OVERVIEW»(ref-481034-S27518425052012061900000) .
  3. For the charge air circuit tightening specifications, refer to «CHARGE AIR COOLER COMPONENTS OVERVIEW»(ref-480929-S20979701032012061900000) .
  4. Fill with coolant, refer to «DRAINING AND FILLING»(ref-480924-S06570051992012061900000) .

OIL SUPPLY LINE TO TURBOCHARGER

Removing

Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING OVERVIEW .

Remove the charge air pipe.

Remove the connecting pipe for the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler.

Remove the lower nut -arrow- for the vacuum line on the cylinder head.

Loosen the union nuts on the oil filter bracket and on the turbocharger.

Loosen the bolt -arrow- on the clamp.

Remove the oil supply line.

Installing

Note. The procedure must be adhered to, in order to guarantee a tension-free installation of the oil supply line.

Set the union nuts of the oil supply line onto the connections.

Tighten the union nut on the oil filter bracket hand tight.

Tighten the union nut on the turbocharger by hand.

Tighten the union nut on the oil filter bracket first and then the union nut on the turbocharger to 22 Nm.

Mount the clamp and tighten the bolt to 10 Nm.

Install the connecting pipe for the EGR cooler.

Install the charge air pipe.

Install the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING OVERVIEW .

OIL PAN

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. T Bar and Socket 10 mm 3185
  2. Hex Ball Socket T10058
  3. Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
  4. Use Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
  5. Silicone Sealant D 176 404 A2
  6. Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment
  7. Protective Eyewear
  8. Flat Scraper

Removing

Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

Place the used oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782 under the engine and drain the engine oil.

Note. Observe disposal regulations!

Loosen the clamp -2-, lift the circlip -1- and remove the cold side charge air hose.

Remove the bolts -arrows- for the charge air pipe and move it to the side.

Remove the bolt -arrow- and move the engine coolant circulation pump 2 -V178- to the side.

Remove the bolt -arrow- from the hot side charge air pipe.

Disconnect the connector from the oil level thermal sensor -G266-.

Remove the bolts securing the oil pan to the transmission.

Remove the oil pan bolt from the cylinder block in a diagonal sequence.

Loosen the oil pan with light blows from a rubber mallet, if necessary.

Remove any sealant residue from the crankshaft housing with a flat blade scraper.

WARNINGWear safety glasses.

Remove any sealant residue from the oil pan with a rotating brush, for example, using a hand drill with a plastic brush attachment (wear eye protection).

Clean the sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

Note. Note the expiration date of the sealant. The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of the silicone sealant.

Cut the sealant tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter: approximately 3 mm).

Apply the silicone sealant as illustrated. The sealant bead must be

  1. 2 to 3 mm thick
  2. and run on the inside of the bolt holes -arrows
CAUTIONThe lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant. Do not apply the sealant bead thicker than indicated.

Apply the bead of sealant as illustrated to the clean sealing surface of the oil pan.

  1. Thickness of sealant bead: 2 to 3 mm.

Note. Being especially careful, apply a bead of sealant around the sealing flange -arrows-. The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the sealant.

Position the oil pan and tighten the bolts securing the oil pan to the transmission and all of the oil pan to cylinder block bolts. Make sure the oil pan lies flush on the intermediate plate/transmission flange.

Note. When installing the oil pan to a engine that is removed from the vehicle, make sure that the oil pan is positioned flush with the crankshaft housing on the flywheel side.

Tighten the oil pan to cylinder block bolts in a diagonal sequence to 15 Nm.

Tighten the oil pan to transmission bolts to 40 Nm.

Note. After installing the oil pan, allow the sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be added.

Further installation is in the reverse order of removal.
