FRONT SEAT

WARNINGPrior to working on the electrical system: disconnect the battery ground cable.

Removal

Note. Due to equipment variations, small deviations must be considered during removal and installation. Obtain the radio code before disconnecting the battery.

Push seat forward.

Unclip cap -10- from the inner seat rail and remove bolt -9-. Unclip cover strip -8- at the rear -arrow A- and remove toward the rear -arrow B-.

Unclip cap -2- from the outer seat rail and remove bolt -3-. Unclip cover strip -4- at the rear arrow -C- and remove toward the front arrow -D-.

Old version

Unclip cover strip -1- from the rear inner seat rail arrow -A- and remove arrow -B-.

Unclip cover strip -5- from the rear outer seat rail arrow -C- and remove arrow -D-.

Continuation for all vehicles

Slide seat toward rear.

Remove bolts -6- (23 Nm) or nuts -7- (23 Nm).

Push seat back out of guide rail.

Note. Before disconnecting the connector for the ignition and ground wire of the airbag, the technician must electrostatically discharge him/herself (touch door striker plate or pin briefly).

Disconnect connector for side airbag -1- from connector station -2-.

If installed, disconnect connector for seat heater -3- from connector station.

Connect connector -4- (airbag adapter VAS 5094) into connector housing -5-.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Note. After connecting battery, vehicle options (radio, clock, electric window regulator) must be checked according to repair information and/or user manual. If the airbag indicator lamp -K75- indicates a malfunction after installation, the DTC memory must be erased using the VAS 5051 and check again.

FRONT BACKREST

Removal

Note. Due to equipment variations, small deviations must be considered during removal and installation.

Remove seat.

Pull off the adjustment knob.

Unclip two caps, unscrew two bolts, and remove the adjustment lever.

Unscrew the bolt and remove the trim.

Remove the bolt.

Remove the trim.

Unclip the left cap and the right cap.

Unclip wiring under seat.

If present, disconnect harness connector -1- for backrest heater.

Pry out clip -2- and remove airbag wiring -3-.

Remove the fitting bolts -4- on both sides of seat and remove backrest.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Note. Fitting bolts -4- must be secured with locking compound D 000 600 A2 (tightening specification 20 Nm).

HEADREST GUIDES

Removal

Remove headrest from backrest.

Press down backrest cushion below guide -2- and disengage retaining tab using screwdriver or drift -1-.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTING ELEMENT

Removal

Note. Due to equipment variations, small deviations must be considered during removal and installation. Before removing, the seat must be brought to the highest position in order to release the tension on the tension springs to the greatest extent possible.

Remove seat.

Unscrew the bolt and unclip the trim.

Unclip two caps, unscrew two bolts, and remove the adjustment lever.

Unscrew the bolt and unclip the trim.

Carefully unhook tension spring -2-.

Remove the bolts -arrows- and pull seat height adjustment -1- out of the seat frame.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Note. The tightening torque of the bolts -arrows- is 10 Nm.

PASSENGER SIDE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BRACKET

Removal

Remove seat.

Remove fire extinguisher.

Remove the screws and bolt.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

LUMBAR SUPPORT FRAME FROM 05.2003

Remove seat.

Remove backrest. Refer to FRONT BACKREST ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Remove the backrest cover from 05.2003. Refer to FRONT BACKREST COVER AND CUSHION FROM 05.2003 .

Remove backrest cushion.

Remove bolts -2- and remove adjustment device -3- from seat backrest -1-.

Drill off pop rivet -4-.

Unclip lumbar support -5- from seat backrest -arrows-.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

BACKREST RELEASE CONTROL CABLE FROM 05.2003

Remove seat.

Remove backrest. Refer to FRONT BACKREST ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Remove the backrest cover from 05.2003. Refer to FRONT BACKREST COVER AND CUSHION FROM 05.2003 .

Remove backrest cushion.

Loosen cable -5-.

Unhook cable hook -4- and remove cable -2- from guide -3-.

Turn cable ball -7- 90° and remove from operating lever -8-.

Unclip clip -6- and remove cable -2- from backrest frame -1-.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

ONE PIECE BACKREST LOCK

Removal

Remove backrest. Refer to ONE PIECE BACKREST .

Remove cushion. Refer to ONE PIECE OR RIGHT-HAND SIDE BACKREST COVER AND CUSHION ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Press connection rod ball joint -1- on left and right off catch -2- using screwdriver -arrow-.

Remove circlip -1- from pin -2-.

Remove spring -3- from backrest -4- using a screwdriver.

Remove pin -2- from backrest -4-, hold spring -3- in place using pliers and remove while doing this.

Disengage button housing -1- -arrow- and remove from rear panel -3-.

Remove release rods -2- and clips -4- from rear panel -3-.

Note. Clips -4- can be removed from rear panel when spreader pins are pressed out of clips. (Remove spreader pins from rear panel for reinstallation.)

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Pin -2-, spring -3- and catch -4- must be inserted together.

Engage circlip -1- on pin -2-.

Tension spring -3-.

Perform functional check when completely installed, readjust catches on left and right if necessary.

Adjusting catches

If present, loosen nut -3- and press connecting rod ball joint -1- off catch -2- -arrow- using screwdriver.

Turn ball joint -1- on operating rod so that effective length of connecting rod becomes larger or smaller.

ONE PIECE SEATBENCH

Removal

Raise seatbench and pull forward.

Press linkage -2- out of brackets -3-.

Installation

Guide linkage -2- into brackets -3-, fold seatbench -1- toward rear and press down at front.

ONE PIECE BACKREST

Removal

Remove bolts -1- from retaining support -2- on center support -3- on back of backrest.

Push seatbench forward. Refer to ONE PIECE SEATBENCH .

Fold backrest down.

Press back lugs -1- on left and right using a screwdriver and remove backrest -2- upward from backrest mount -3-.

Installation

Install backrest -2- into backrest mounting -3- and press downward. (Catches -1- will lock when doing this.)

Install retaining support -2- onto center mounting -3-.

Install bolts -1- on back of backrest. Tightening specification: 20 Nm

TWO PIECE SEATBENCH

Note. Illustration shows only the left bench seat. Removing the right bench seat is identical.

Raise seatbench and pull forward.

Push rod -2- out of bracket -3-.

Installation

Guide linkage -2- into bracket -3-, fold bench seat -1- toward rear and press down at front.

TWO PIECE BACKREST

Note. Illustration shows only the left backrest. Removal of the right backrest is identical.

Fold backrest -1- forward.

Using screwdriver, press catch -2- toward rear -arrow A-.

Pull backrest -1- up out of mount -3- and remove from center anchor -4- -arrow B-.

Installation

Guide backrest -1- onto anchor -4- and press down in mount -3- at outside.

TWO PIECES RIGHT BACKREST LOCK

Removal

Remove backrest. Refer to TWO PIECE BACKREST .

Remove cushion. Refer to ONE PIECE OR RIGHT-HAND SIDE BACKREST COVER AND CUSHION ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Press connecting rod ball joint -1- off catch -2- using screwdriver -arrow-.

Remove circlip -1- from pin -2-.

Remove spring -3- from backrest -4- using a screwdriver.

Remove pin -2- from backrest -4-, hold spring -3- in place using pliers and remove while doing this.

Disengage button housing -1- -arrow- and remove from rear panel -3-.

Remove release rods -2- and clips -4- from rear panel -3-.

Note. Clips -4- can be removed from rear panel when spreader pins are pressed out of clips. (Remove spreader pins from rear panel for reinstallation.)

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Pin -2-, spring -3- and catch -5- must be inserted together.

Engage circlip -1- on pin -2-.

Tension spring -3-.

Perform functional check when completely installed, readjust catch if necessary.

Adjusting catches

If present, loosen nut -3- and press connecting rod ball joint -1- off catch -2- -arrow- using screwdriver.

Turn ball joint -1- on operating rod so that effective length of connecting rod becomes larger or smaller.

TWO PIECE LEFT BACKREST LOCK

Removal

Remove backrest. Refer to TWO PIECE BACKREST .

Remove cushion. Refer to LEFT BACKREST COVER AND CUSHION ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Use a screwdriver, to press connecting rod ball joint -1- off of engagement hook -2- -arrow-.

Remove circlip -1- from pin -2-.

Remove spring -3- from backrest -4- using a screwdriver.

Remove pin -2- from backrest -4-, hold spring -3- in place using pliers and remove while doing this.

Unclip operating rod -1- in clip -2- by swinging toward right -arrow- and remove from clip.

Remove clip -2- from release rod -3-.

Remove release rods -1- and -2- and clips -4- from rear panel -3-.

Note. Release rods -1- and -2- must be removed upward from backrest together and installed together. Clips -4- can be removed from rear panel when spreader pins are pressed out of clips. (Remove spreader pins from rear panel for reinstallation.)

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

Pin -2-, spring -3- and catch -4- must be inserted together.

Engage circlip -1- on pin -2-.

Tension spring -3-.

Perform functional check when completely installed, readjust catch if necessary.

If present, loosen nut -3- and press connecting rod ball joint -1- off catch -2- -arrow- using screwdriver.

Turn ball joint -1- on operating rod so that effective length of connecting rod becomes larger or smaller.

SEATBENCH, CONVERTIBLE

Removal

Raise seatbench at front and pull forward.

Press linkage -2- out of brackets -3-.

Installation

Guide linkage -2- into brackets -3-, fold seatbench -1- toward rear and press down at front.

BACKREST, CONVERTIBLE

Removal

Remove the rear bench seat. Refer to SEATBENCH, CONVERTIBLE .

Pull headrest cover -1- upward and remove.

Remove bolts -3- (20 Nm).

Remove backrest -2- upward out of mounting -4-.

Installation

To install, perform the steps used in removal in reverse order.

PASS-THROUGH HATCH, CONVERTIBLE

Removal

Remove backrest. Refer to BACKREST, CONVERTIBLE .

Unclip the cover from the luggage compartment.

Remove the bolt (only vehicles with ski bag).

Remove bolts.

Remove load-through hatch.

Installation
