ON-VEHICLE REPAIR
- Remove Propeller Shaft See «DRIVESHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(ref-170619) article.
- Remove Rear Oil Seal: Using SST, 09308-10010. (Scheme 318)
- Install Oil Seal: Using SST and a hammer, carefully drive a new oil seal in as far as it will go. (Scheme 319) SST 09325-40010 Coat the lip of the oil seal with MP grease.
- Install Propeller Shaft See «DRIVESHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(ref-170619) article.
- CHECK FLUID LEVEL.

- Remove Propeller Shaft See «DRIVESHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(ref-170619) article.
- Remove No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor And Speedometer Driven Gear. See «VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR»(ref-170053-S18235425652004122800000).
- Remove No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor. See «VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR»(ref-170053-S18235425652004122800000).
- Jack Up Transmission Slightly. Securely support the transmission on a transmission jack. Lift the transmission slightly from the crossmember.
- Remove Crossmember. Remove the 4 bolts on the rear mounting side from the engine rear mounting insulator. (Scheme 320) Remove the 4 nuts, bolts, washers and crossmember.
- Remove Engine Rear Mounting Insulator From Extension Housing. Remove the 4 bolts and engine rear mounting insulator from the extension housing. (Scheme 321)
- Remove Extension Housing And Gasket. Remove the 6 bolts, gasket and extension housing. If necessary, tap the extension housing with a plastic hammer or a block of wood to loosen it.
- Remove Speed Meter Drive Gear Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring. (Scheme 322) Remove the speed meter drive gear.
- Remove Sensor Rotor And Key: Remove the sensor rotor and key. (Scheme 323) Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.
- Install Sensor Rotor And Key: Using a snap ring expander, install the snap ring. Install the key and sensor rotor. (Scheme 323)
- Install Speed Meter Drive Gear: Install the speed meter drive gear. Using a snap ring expander, install the snap ring.
- Install Extension Housing And Gasket: Apply sealant or equivalent to the 6 bolt threads. Sealant: Part No. 08833 - 00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent Install the extension housing with a new gasket to the case. (Scheme 322) NOTE: The 2 lower bolts are shorter. Install the 6 bolts. Torque: 36 N.m (370 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf)
- Install Engine Rear Mounting Insulator To Extension Housing. Install the engine rear mounting insulator with the 4 bolts. (Scheme 321) Torque: 65 N.m (660 kgf.cm, 48 ft.lbf)
- Install Crossmember: Install the crossmember with the 4 washers, bolts and nuts. (Scheme 320) Torque: 72 N.m (730 kgf.cm, 53 ft.lbf) Install the 4 bolts on the rear mounting side to the engine rear mounting insulator. Torque: 18 N.m (180 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)
- Install No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor. See «VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR»(ref-170053-S18235425652004122800000).
- Install Speedometer Driven Gear And No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor See «VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR»(ref-170053-S18235425652004122800000).
- Install Propeller Shaft. See «DRIVESHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(ref-170619) article.
- Fill ATF And Check Fluid Level

- Disconnect No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor Connector (Scheme 324)
- Remove No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor. Remove the bolt and No. 1 vehicle speed sensor.
- Disassemble No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor: Remove the "O" ring from the speed meter driven gear assembly. (Scheme 325) Remove the clip and speed meter driven gear from the speed meter driven gear from the speed meter driven gear sleeve.
- Assemble No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor: Install the speed meter driven gear and clip to the speed meter driven gear sleeve. (Scheme 325) Coat a new "O" ring with ATF. Install the "O" ring to the speed meter driven gear assembly.
- Install No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor. Install the No. 1 vehicle speed sensor with the bolt. Torque: 16 N.m (160 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf)
- Connect No. 1 Vehicle Speed Sensor Connector.
- Disconnect No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor Connector.
- Remove No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor: Remove the bolt and No. 2 vehicle speed sensor. (Scheme 326) Remove the "O" ring from the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor.
- Install No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor: Coat a new "O" ring with ATF and install it to the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor. (Scheme 327) Install the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor with the bolt. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in..lbf)
- Connect No. 2 Vehicle Speed Sensor Connector.

- Disconnect O/D Direct Clutch Speed Sensor Connector.
- Remove O/D Direct Clutch Speed Sensor: Remove the bolt and O/D direct clutch speed sensor. (Scheme 328) Remove the "O" ring from the O/D direct clutch speed sensor.
- Install O/D Direct Clutch Speed Sensor: Coat a new "O" ring with ATF and install it to the O/D direct clutch speed sensor. Install the O/D direct clutch speed sensor to the transmission case with the bolt. Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in..lbf)
- Connect O/D Direct Clutch Speed Sensor Connector.

- Disconnect ATF Temperature Sensor Connector.
- Remove ATF Temperature Sensor: Remove the ATF temperature sensor. (Scheme 329) Remove the "O" ring from the ATF temperature sensor.
- Install ATF Temperature Sensor: Coat a new "O" ring with ATF and install it to the ATF temperature sensor. Install the ATF temperature sensor. Torque: 15 N.m (150 kgf.cm, 11 ft.lbf)
- Connect ATF Temperature Sensor Connector. Install the 3 clamps with the 3 bolts. (Scheme 330)
- FILL ATF AND CHECK FLUID LEVEL.

- Disconnect Oil Cooler Pipe.
- Remove Park/Neutral Position Switch: Disconnect the connector. (Scheme 331) Pry off the lock washer and remove the nut. Remove the bolt and park/neutral position switch.
- Install Park/Neutral Position Switch: Install the park/neutral position switch and bolt. Torque: 13 N.m (130 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf) Install a new lock plate and the nut. Torque: 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 35 in..lbf) Bend claws on the lock plate to fix the nut. Connect the connector. Check that the engine can be started with the shift lever only in the "N" or "P" position, but not in other positions. If not as stated above, carry out the Adjustment Procedure.
- Connect Oil Cooler Pipe.
- Fill ATF And Check Fluid Level.
- Test Drive Vehicle.
Note. When working with FIPG material, you must observe the followings. Using a razor blade and a gasket scraper, remove all old FIPG material from the sealing surfaces. Thoroughly clean all components to remove all loose material. Clean both sealing surfaces with a non-residue solvent. Apply FIPG in an approx. 1 mm (0.04 in.) wide bead along the sealing surface. Parts must be assembled within 10 minutes of application. Otherwise, the FIPG material must be removed and reapplied.

- Remove Drain Plug And Drain ATF.
- Remove Oil Pan: Remove the 19 bolts. (Scheme 332) NOTE: When removing the oil pan, be careful not to damage the oil pan flange. Install the blade of SST between the transmission case and oil pan, cut off applied sealer and remove the oil pan. SST 09032-00100. (Scheme 333)
- Examine Particles In Pan. Remove the magnets and use them to collect steel particles. Carefully look at the foreign matter and particles in the pan and on the magnets to anticipate the type of wear you will find in the transmission. Steel (magnetic)...bearing, gear and clutch plate wear Brass (non- magnetic)...bushing wear.
- Remove Oil Strainer: NOTE: Be careful as some fluid will come out with the oil strainer. Remove the 4 bolts and oil strainer. (Scheme 335) Remove the 3 gaskets from the oil strainer.
- Disconnect 4 Connectors From Each Shift Solenoid Valve. (Scheme 337)
- Remove Valve Body Remove the 17 bolts and valve body. (Scheme 338)
- Remove Shift Solenoid Valve Remove the 2 bolts and 3 shift solenoid valves. Turn the valve body, remove the bolt, lock plate and shift solenoid valve. Remove the 3 "O" rings from the 3 solenoid valves.
- Remove Detent Spring.
- Remove Manual Valve.
- Install Manual Valve.
- Install Detent Spring. Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf)
- Install Solenoid Valve. Install 3 NEW "O" rings to 3 shift solenoid valves. Install the shift solenoid valve and lock plate with the bolt. Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) Install the 3 shift solenoid valves with the 2 bolts. Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf). (Scheme 339)
- Install Valve Body Align the groove of the manual valve with the pin of the lever. (Scheme 340) Install the valve body with the 17 bolts. Torque: 11 N.m (110 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf) Bolt length: Bolt A: 23 mm (0.91 in.) Bolt B: 28 mm (1.10 in.) Bolt C: 36 mm (1.42 in.)
- Connect 4 Connectors To Shift Solenoid Valves. (Scheme 337)
- Install Oil Strainer: Install 3 new gaskets. (Scheme 336) Install the oil strainer with the 4 bolts. (Scheme 335) Torque: 10 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) Bolt length: Bolt A: 14 mm (0.55 in.) Bolt B: 20 mm (0.79 in.) Bolt C: 23 mm (0.91 in.)
- Install Oil Pan: Install the 4 magnets in the indications of the oil pan. (Scheme 341) Apply FIPG to the oil pan, as shown in the illustration. (Scheme 342) FIPG: Part No. 08826-00090, THREE BOND 1281 or equivalent Install the 19 bolts and oil pan. (Scheme 332) Torque: 7.4 N.m (75 kgf.cm, 65 in.lbf)
- Fill And Check ATF: Install a new gasket and the drain plug. Torque: 20 N.m (200 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) Fill new fluid through the filler pipe.

- Remove Parking Lock Pawl Bracket. Remove the 3 bolts and parking lock pawl bracket. (Scheme 343)

- Remove Pipe Loosen the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 hoses. (Scheme 347)
- Remove Oil Cooler Remove the 3 bolts and oil cooler. (Scheme 348) Torque: 11 N.m (110 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf) Remove the bolt, transmission oil cooler bracket and grommet. Torque: 4.9 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 43 in..lbf) Remove the 2 grommets and condenser mounting insulators. (Scheme 349)
- Remove Oil Cooler Tube: Loosen the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 hoses. (Scheme 350) Remove the bolt and oil cooler tube with the 2 hoses. Torque: 5.0 N.m (50 kgf.cm, 48 in..lbf) Loosen the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 hoses.

- Remove Steering Column Assembly See «REMOVAL»(ref-170637-S13152019132005011200000) in STEERING COLUMN.
- Remove Parking Lock Cable Assembly: Remove the screw and parking lock cable No. 2. Using a Torx socket wrench, remove the 2 screws and parking lock cable No. 1. (Scheme 353) Remove the spring. Remove the 2 bolts and parking lock cable housing.
- Remove Shift Lever: Disconnect the connector. Using a Torx socket wrench, remove the Torx screw and shift lever. Remove the upper No. 2 steering column cover.
- Remove Shift Lever Housing. Using a Torx socket wrench, remove the 3 Torx screws and shift lever housing.

- Install Shift Lever Housing. Using a Torx socket wrench, install the shift lever housing with the 3 new screws. Torque: 12 N.m (120 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf)
- Install Shift Lever: Install the upper No. 2 steering column cover. Using a Torx socket wrench, install the shift lever with a new screw. Torque: 18 N.m (180 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) Connect the connector.
- Install Parking Lock Cable No. 1 And No. 2: Apply MP grease on the lock pin and internal surface of shift lever housing. NOTE: Be careful not to bend or twist the cable abnormally. Install the spring and parking lock cable No. 1 into the shift lever housing. Using a Torx socket wrench, install 2 new screws. Torque: 2.9 N.m (29 kgf.cm, 25 in..lbf) Wire the cable No. 1 and No. 2, as shown in the illustration. See. NOTE: Be careful not to bend or twist the cable abnormally. Install the cable housing to steering column assembly with 2 new bolts temporarily. After installation, confirm the following items. When the shift lever is at "P" position and the pedal button is pushed by 7 mm (0.28 in.), shift lever should be locked by lock pin. see scheme 39 When the pedal button is released, the shift lever should be able to be shifted from "P" position to other positions. When the shift lever is at "N" or "D" position and the pedal button is pushed by 7 mm (0.28 in.), the shift lever should be able to be shifted. Install the parking lock cable No. 2 to column upper bracket with the clip. Install the cable end to the sliding block of the column upper bracket with the screw. Torque: 2.2 N.m (23 kgf.cm, 19 in..lbf) After installation, check the following items. When the pedal button is pushed, shift lever should be locked. When the pedal button is released, shift lever should be unlocked.
- Install Steering Column Assembly See «INSTALLATION»(ref-170637-S06109386242005011200000) in STEERING COLUMN article.
- Adjust Cable Housing: Shift the shift lever to the "P" position. Turn the ignition key to LOCK. Loosen the 2 bolts and adjust the cable housing. Pedal button should touch the pedal plate cushion. Brake pedal should not be moved by the pedal button. Cable housing should not be toughed the brake pedal and the brake pedal plate cushion. Torque the 2 bolts. Torque: 10.5 N.m (110 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf)
- Confirm Shift Lock System Operation: Only when the brake pedal is engaged and the ignition key is not at LOCK, should the shift lever be able to be shifted from "P" position to other positions. When the shift lever is at "P" position and the brake pedal is released, the shift lever should not be able to be shifted from "P" position to other positions. When the shift lever is not at "P" position, the ignition key should not be able to be turned to LOCK. Once when the shift lever is at "P" position, should the ignition key be able to be removed. Cable No. 1 and No. 2 should not be deformed by other parts located around the steering column.
