TRANSMISSION APPLICATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicles, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicles, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. To assist in removal and installation of transaxle (Scheme 306)and (Scheme 307).

  1. Remove oil filler pipe. Remove the ATF level gauge. Remove the bolt and oil filler pipe with the "O" ring. (Scheme 308)
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Remove No. 1 engine under cover.
  4. Remove front and center exhaust pipe. Remove No. 2 exhaust pipe. (Scheme 309)
  5. Remove front (if applicable) and rear drive shafts.
  6. Disconnect speed sensor connectors and solenoid connector. (Scheme 310)
  7. Separate shift control cable from transmission. Remove the 2 nuts and transmission control cable insulator. Remove the nut and disconnect the shift control cable. Remove the 2 bolts and shift control cable bracket from the transmission. (Scheme 311)
  8. Disconnect O/D direct clutch speed sensor connector. (Scheme 312)
  9. Disconnect oil cooler pipes. (Scheme 313)and (Scheme 314).
  10. Disconnect ATF temperature sensor connector and Park/Neutral position switch connector.
  11. Remove rear end plate and torque converter clutch mounting bolt. (Scheme 315) Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley set bolt with a wrench.
  12. Securely support the transmission on a transmission jack. Lift transmission slightly from crossmember.
  13. Remove 4 bolts on rear mounting side from engine rear mounting insulator. Remove nuts, bolts, washers and crossmember. (Scheme 316) Remove engine rear mounting insulator. see scheme 12
  14. Separate the wire harness from the transmission and transfer case (if applicable). Lower rear end of transmission. Remove 10 bolts and transmission.

  1. Before installing transaxle, measure torque converter depth from torque converter bolt lug on torque converter to surface on transmission. see scheme 13
  2. Torque converter depth should be more than.673" (17.09 mm). If torque converter depth is less than specified, check for improperly seated torque converter.
  3. Check drive plate runout. Using dial indicator, measure drive plate runout. If runout is not.0079"(.201 mm), replace drive plate.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158022-S14040942692003090500000).
  5. Apply grease to transfer case shift lever before installing. Use NEW gasket when installing front exhaust pipe. Adjust all cables, shift linkages and fill transmission with ATF fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.
