  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation)
  4. Wait 5 seconds.
  5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  6. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.

RETARD CAMSHAFT TIMING

If the difference between the target and actual camshaft timings is greater than the specified value, the ECM operates the VVT actuator. Then, the ECM monitors the camshaft timing change for 5 seconds.

Scheme 529: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle at approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) for 10 minutes or more [C]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  8. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].
  10. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  12. Input the DTC: P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022.
  13. Check the DTC judgment result.   17. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 OR P0025) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code. Read DTCs. Result Display (DTC output) Proceed to P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 A P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 and other DTCs B HINT: If any DTCs other than P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first. B --> See step 4 A: Go to next step
  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the Techstream ON. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1) or Control the VVT System (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester. OK Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV OFF Normal engine speed OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON) NG --> See step 5 OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 OR P0025) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the Techstream ON. Clear DTCs.Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-493460-S06003279822012081000000) . Warm up the engine. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern. Read DTCs using the Techstream. OK No DTC output. NG --> See step 5 OK --> END
  4. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-493460-S19564278272012081000000)
  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) Remove the cylinder head cover RH and LH. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), and then align the marks as above. OK Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration. Reinstall the cylinder head cover RH and LH. NG --> ADJUST VALVE TIMING OK: Go to next step
  6. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) Remove the OCV. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV. Standard resistance 6.9 to 7.9 ohms at 20°C (68°F) Apply positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation. OK Valve moves quickly. Reinstall the OCV. NG --> See step 10 OK: Go to next step
  7. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND PIPE Remove the oil pipe No. 1 or No. 2. Remove the OCV filter. Check that the filter and pipe are not clogged. OK The filter and pipe are not clogged. Reinstall the OCV filter. Reinstall the oil pipe No. 1 or No. 2. NG --> CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND PIPE OK: Go to next step
  8. REPLACE EXHAUST CAMSHAFT NEXT: Go to next step
  9. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the Techstream ON. Clear DTCs. Warm up the engine. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern. Read output DTCs using the Techstream. OK No DTC output. HINT: DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 is output when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will remain set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem. OK --> SYSTEM IS OK NG --> See step 11
  10. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-493466-S01432846022012081000000)

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) Remove the cylinder head cover RH and LH. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. Scheme 538: DESCRIPTION
  1. The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, mounted on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter, monitors the IAT. The IAT sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the IAT is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes see scheme 1
  2. The IAT sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R.
  3. Resistor R and the IAT sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the IAT sensor changes, according to changes in the IAT, the voltage at terminal THA also varies. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability. HINT: When either DTC P0112 or P0113 is set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the IAT is estimated to be 20°C (68°F) by the ECM. Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected.

FAIL-SAFE

When any of these DTCs as well as other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

  5. Check that "Coolant Temp" is 56°C (133°F) or less and "Intake Air" is between 0 and 35°C (32 and 95°F).
  6. Set the heater to MAX HOT with fresh air mode selected and turn the A/C off.
  7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 15 minutes [B]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws. HINT: Data can be captured relatively easily by using the snapshot function in the Data List. Enter the following menu: Data List / Function / Snap-shot configuration / Record time / 5 min. Data capture can be started by using the target point function. For example, setting the target point to an engine speed of 4000 rpm and then racing the engine, etc. to raise the engine speed to a speed of 4000 rpm or more will cause data capture to start.
  8. After "Coolant Temp" stabilizes, check that "Coolant Temp" is 75°C (167°F) or higher [C]. HINT: If "Coolant Temp" is below 75°C (167°F) while driving the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph), inspect the cooling system and thermostat.

  7. Start the engine and warm it up (until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or more) [A].
  8. Drive the vehicle at between 64 km/h and 113 km/h (40 mph and 70 mph) for at least 10 minutes or more [B].
  9. The monitor items will change to Complete as Catalyst monitor operates.
  10. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.
  11. Check if any DTCs (pending DTCs) are set.

HINT

If Catalyst does not change to Complete, and no pending DTCs are set, extend the driving time.

Note. The Evaporative System Check (Automatic Mode) consists of 5 steps performed automatically by the Techstream. It takes a maximum of approximately 18 minutes. Do not perform the Evaporative System Check when the fuel tank is more than 90% full because the cut-off valve may be closed, making the fuel tank leak check unavailable. Do not run the engine during this operation. When the temperature of the fuel is 35°C (95°F) or more, a large amount of vapor forms and any check results become inaccurate. When performing the Evaporative System Check, keep the fuel temperature below 35°C (95°F).

Scheme 561: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation) [A].
  4. Start the engine and wait 15 minutes or more [B].
  5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All readiness.
  6. Input the DTC: P0441.
  7. Check the DTC judgment result [C]. Tester Display Description NORMAL DTC judgment completed System normal ABNORMAL DTC judgment completed System abnormal INCOMPLETE DTC judgment not completed Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions N/A Unable to perform DTC judgment Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU's memory limit NOTE: The Evaporative System Check (Automatic Mode) consists of 5 steps performed automatically by the Techstream. It takes a maximum of approximately 18 minutes. Do not perform the Evaporative System Check when the fuel tank is more than 90% full because the cut-off valve may be closed, making the fuel tank leak check unavailable. Do not run the engine during this operation. When the temperature of the fuel is 35°C (95°F) or more, a large amount of vapor forms and any check results become inaccurate. When performing the Evaporative System Check, keep the fuel temperature below 35°C (95°F).
  8. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  9. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation) [D].
  10. Enter the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / Evaporative System Check / Automatic Mode.
  11. After the "Evaporative System Check" is completed, check for All Readiness by entering the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  12. Input the DTC: P0441.
  13. Check the DTC judgment result [E]. Tester Display Description NORMAL DTC judgment completed System normal ABNORMAL DTC judgment completed System abnormal INCOMPLETE DTC judgment not completed Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions N/A Unable to perform DTC judgment Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU's memory limit HINT: If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
  14. If the test result is N/A, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code / Pending.
  15. Read Pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
  16. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs.Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-493460-S06003279822012081000000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.
