TRANSAXLE APPLICATION
| WARNING | Vehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicles, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicles, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |

- Remove engine hood. (Scheme 383)
- Remove battery.
- Remove front wiper, cowl top ventilator louver LH and RH, and outer front cowl top panel. (Scheme 384)
- Remove No. 2 cylinder head cover. Remove the 4 nuts and No. 2 cylinder head cover.
- Remove air cleaner bracket. Remove the 2 bolts, air cleaner bracket and throttle cable clamp. (Scheme 385)
- Separate engine wire harness from transaxle. Remove the bolt and engine wire harness bracket. (Scheme 386)
- Disconnect park/neutral position switch, solenoid wire, direct clutch speed sensor connector.
- Disconnect ground terminal. Remove the bolt and ground terminal. (Scheme 387)
- Disconnect shift control cable from bracket and control shaft lever. (Scheme 388) Remove the nut and disconnect the shift control cable from the control shaft lever. Remove the clip and disconnect the shift control cable from the bracket.
- Disconnect hose from filler pipe.
- Remove 2 transaxle-to-engine upper side bolts. (Scheme 389)
- Remove starter upper side bolt.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove LH and RH engine under cover.
- Remove starter. Remove the nut and disconnect the starter wire. Disconnect the connector. Remove the bolt and starter. Remove the starter cover. (Scheme 390)
- Remove oil cooler hose. Loosen the 2 clips and disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses. (Scheme 391)
- Remove LH and RH axle shafts. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
- Remove hole plug to access torque converter bolts.
- Remove torque converter mounting bolt. (Scheme 392) Turn the crankshaft to gain access and remove the 6 bolts while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.
- Install the 2 No. 1 engine hangers (12281-21010) with the bolt in the correct direction. Attach the engine chain hoist to the engine hangers. (Scheme 393)
- Remove front suspension member reinforcement. Remove the 4 bolts and LH and RH front suspension member reinforcement.
- Remove front suspension member with lower suspension arm, steering gear assembly and stabilizer bar. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION. (Scheme 394)
- Remove transaxle. Remove the 5 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. (Scheme 395) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the LH engine mounting. (Scheme 396) Separate and remove the transaxle.

- Before installing transaxle, use dial indicator to check drive plate runout. Drive plate runout should be checked near starter ring gear on drive plate. Replace drive plate if runout exceeds.008" (.20 mm).
- Using straightedge and caliper, measure torque converter depth from torque converter bolt lug on torque converter to the surface on transaxle. (Scheme 397)
- Torque converter depth should be more than.366" (9.3 mm). If torque converter depth is less than specified, check for improperly seated torque converter.
- To install transaxle, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-157884-S06297133712003082900000). Adjust all cables and fill transaxle with fluid. See appropriate SERVICING article.
