Scheme 636: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
  2. Switch the hand-held tester from the normal mode to the check mode (See «PRE-CHECK»(ref-206112-S06872093152005112400000) ).
  3. Start the engine and let it idle for 60 seconds or more.
  4. Drive the vehicle at 25 mph (40 km/h) or more for 40 seconds or more.
  5. Let the engine idle for 10 seconds or more.
  6. Perform steps (d) and (e) 12 times.

HINT

If a malfunction exists, the MIL will be illuminated on the multi information display during step (f).

Note. If the conditions in this test are not strictly followed, detection of a malfunction will not occur. If you do not have a hand-held tester, turn the ignition switch OFF after performing steps from (c) to (f), then perform steps from (c) to (f) again.

  1. Check OCV for VVTL circuit. PREPARATION: Start the engine and warm it up. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON. Enter the following menus: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / ALL/VVTL CTRL B1. Maintain engine speed at 1,500 to 2,500 rpm. CHECK: Check the engine speed when operate the OCV for VVTL by the hand-held tester. OK: TESTER OPERATION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION Tester Operation Specified Condition VVTL CTRL B1 is OFF (OCV is OFF) Normal engine speed VVTL CTRL B1 is ON (OCV is ON) Rough engine speed or engine stalled OK: Check for intermittent problems (See «PRE-CHECK»(ref-206112-S06872093152005112400000) ). NG : Go to next step.
  2. Check oil pressure switch for VVTL PREPARATION: Start the engine and warm it up. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON. Enter the following menu: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / ACTIVE TEST / ALL / VVTL CTRL B1. Disconnect the oil pressure switch for VVTL connector. Maintain the engine speed at 3,500 to 4,000 rpm. CHECK: Check for continuity between the oil pressure switch and body ground when operating the OCV by handheld tester. OK: TESTER OPERATION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION Tester Operation Specified Condition VVTL CTRL B1 is OFF (OCV is OFF) No continuity VVTL CTRL B1 is ON (OCV is ON) Continuity OK : Replace oil pressure switch. NG : Go to next step.
  3. Check for open and short in harness and connector between oil pressure switch for VVTL and ECM (See «HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE»(ref-206072-S25601918062005112300000) ). NG : Repair or replace harness or connector. OK : Replace ECM (See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) in «SFI»(ref-206126) ).
  4. Check oil control valve filter. PREPARATION: Remove the generator. (See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-164007-S40900360872004072000000) ) Remove the oil control valve filter. CHECK: Check the oil control valve filter. Confirm that the filter is clear. NG : Replace oil control valve filter. OK : Go to next step.
  5. Check operation of OCV for VVTL. PREPARATION: Start the engine and warmed it up. CHECK: Check the engine speed at (1) and (2). Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing oil control valve connector. Apply the battery voltage between the terminals of the camshaft timing oil control valve. RESULT: OK: Engine stalled. B : Replace OCV for VVTL. A : Check for intermittent problems (See «PRE-CHECK»(ref-206112-S06872093152005112400000) ).

  1. Check oil pressure switch for VVTL. PREPARATION: Disconnect the oil pressure switch for VVTL connector. Ignition switch OFF. CHECK: Measure continuity between the oil pressure switch and body ground. OK: No continuity PREPARATION: Start the engine and warm it up. Disconnect the OCV for VVTL connector. Maintain engine speed at 6,500 rpm. CHECK: Measure continuity between the oil pressure switch and body ground when applying battery voltage between terminals of the OCV. OK: VVTL system is OFF (OCV is OFF): No continuity VVTL system is ON (OCV is ON): Continuity NG : Replace oil pressure switch. OK : Go to next step.
  2. Check for open and short in harness and connector between oil pressure switch for VVTL and ECM (See «HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE»(ref-206072-S25601918062005112300000) ). NG : Repair or replace harness or connector. OK : Go to next step.
  3. Check oil control valve filter. PREPARATION: Remove the generator. (See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-164007-S40900360872004072000000) ) Remove the oil control valve filter. CHECK: Check the oil control valve filter. Confirm that the filter is clear. NG : Replace oil control valve filter. OK : Go to next step.
  4. Check operation of OCV for VVTL. PREPARATION: Start the engine and warm it up. CHECK: Check the engine speed at (1) and (2). Disconnect the C2 camshaft timing oil control valve connector.
