DOES NOT START

Engine Does Not Crank

  1. On all models except Prius, check battery and battery cables.
  2. On all models except Prius, check starter. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  3. On all models except Prius, check starter relay. See appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
  4. On A/T models except MR2, Prius and RAV4, check park/neutral position switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  5. On MR2 and RAV4, check body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See appropriate BODY CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  6. On Prius, the Hybrid Vehicle (HV) control Electronic Control Unit (ECU) or Motor Generator No. 1 (MG1) may be the problem. Consult authorized dealer for servicing.

No Initial Combustion

  1. Check Engine Control Module (ECM) power source circuit. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  2. On Camry (except Solara) and MR2 models, check ignition coils with ignitor assemblies. See DTC P0351: IGNITION COIL PRIMARY/SECONDARY CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  3. On , Corolla, Matrix and RAV4 models, check ignition coils with ignitor assemblies. See DTC P1300: IGNITOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  4. On all models, check fuel pump control circuit. See FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. On some models, see DTC P0230: FUEL PUMP PRIMARY CIRCUIT under DIAGNIOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  5. On Camry (except Solara), Corolla, Matrix, MR2 and RAV4 models, check injector circuit. See DTC P0300: RANDOM/MULTIPLE CYLINDER MISFIRE DETECTED under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  6. On all models, check Engine Control Module (ECM) electrical connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals and repair as necessary. For illustration of ECM location, see appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If electrical connector is okay, check ECM ground circuits. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. Repair as necessary. If ground circuits are okay, replace ECM with a known-good ECM and retest.

No Complete Combustion

  1. On Camry (except Solara) and MR2 models, check ignition coils with ignitor assemblies. See DTC P0351: IGNITION COIL PRIMARY/SECONDARY CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  2. On , Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4 models, check ignition coils with ignitor assemblies. See DTC P1300: IGNITOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  3. On all models, check fuel pump control circuit. See FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. On some models, see DTC P0230: FUEL PUMP PRIMARY CIRCUIT under DIAGNIOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

DIFFICULT TO START

Difficult To Start & Engine Cranks Normally

Models with sequential manual transaxle may be identified by the shift lever pattern which consists of "R", "N", "S" and "+" in place of the conventional type shift lever pattern and no clutch pedal is used.

Difficult To Start When Engine Is Hot Or Cold

Models with sequential manual transaxle may be identified by the shift lever pattern which consists of "R", "N", "S" and "+" in place of the conventional type shift lever pattern and no clutch pedal is used.

POOR IDLING

High Idle Speed

  1. Check Engine Control Module (ECM) power source and backup power source circuit. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article and DTC P0560: SYSTEM VOLTAGE under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  2. On Corolla (A/T ) and Matrix (A/T ), check park/neutral position switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under ENGINE SENSORS & SWITCHES in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  3. Check A/C signal. A/C signal may also be referred to as A/C switch signal or compressor circuit. See appropriate MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
  4. On MR2 with sequential manual transaxle, check throttle body and components for Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). Hunting & Surging

  1. On Camry (except Solara), Corolla, MR2 and RAV4 models, check spark plugs. Replace as necessary.
  2. Check Engine Control Module (ECM) power source and backup power source circuit. POOR DRIVEABILITY

Hesitation/Poor Acceleration

  1. On all models, check fuel pump control circuit. See FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article or on some models, see DTC P0230: FUEL PUMP PRIMARY CIRCUIT under DIAGNIOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
  2. On models with electronic controlled automatic transaxle/transmission, (except MR2 and Prius), check for problem with electronic controls for automatic transaxle/transmission. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
  3. On Avalon, Corolla, ECHO, Highlander, Matrix, Prius and 4Runner, check A/C-cut control system circuit. See A/C-CUT CONTROL SYSTEM CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  4. On Prius, there may be a problem with the hybrid transaxle.

Surging

  1. On Camry (except Solara), Corolla, Matrix, MR2 and RAV4 models, check spark plugs. Replace as necessary.

ENGINE STALLS

Engine Starts And Then Stalls

  1. On Avalon, Camry, Camry Solara, Celica, Corolla, ECHO, Highlander, Matrix, MR2, Prius, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra 3.4L V6 and 4Runner, check fuel pump control circuit. See FUEL PUMP CONTROL CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  2. On MR2 with sequential manual transaxle, check throttle body and components for Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS).   2. On MR2 with sequential manual transaxle, check throttle body and components for Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). See THROTTLE BODY under IDLE CONTROL SYSTEMS in «SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER»(ref-151978) article. Models with sequential manual transaxle may be identified by the shift lever pattern which consists of "R", "N", "S" and "+" in place of the conventional type shift lever pattern and no clutch pedal is used.

Engine Stall During A/C Operation

  1. Check A/C signal. A/C signal may also be referred to as A/C switch signal or compressor circuit. See appropriate MANUAL or AUTOMATIC A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
  2. Check Engine Control Module (ECM) power source and backup power source circuit. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article and DTC P0560: SYSTEM VOLTAGE under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.

REFUELING PROBLEM

Note. On-Board Refilling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system is used to recover fuel vapors into charcoal canister that are generated during refueling. Manufacturer provides procedure for only the models listed.

Unable/Difficult To Refuel

  1. On Avalon, Camry Solara, Corolla, ECHO, Highlander, Matrix, MR2, Prius and 4Runner, a problem may exist in the On-Board Refilling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system. Check fuel evaporative system. See FUEL EVAP SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  2. Check fuel evaporative system. See FUEL EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.

A/C SWITCH INDICATOR BLINKING

  1. On Camry 2.4L 4-cylinder and Camry Solara 2.4L 4-cylinder, check A/C compressor lock sensor circuit. See A/C COMPRESSOR LOCK SENSOR CIRCUIT under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in «SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - 4-CYLINDER»(ref-151978) article.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce the conditions creating an intermittent fault, use the following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component. See «VIBRATION METHOD»(ref-151977-S16306773432003010900000) .
  2. Heat component. See «HEATING METHOD»(ref-151977-S42232595692003010900000) .
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness. See «VIBRATION METHOD»(ref-151977-S16306773432003010900000) .
  4. Spray component with water. See «WATER APPLICATION METHOD»(ref-151977-S30544664312003010900000) .

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent. If engine is running, monitor for diagnostic trouble codes. Use test results to identify a faulty component or circuit.
