- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove drain plug and drain fluid.
- If oil filter is to be changed, remove oil pan using the following steps: Remove 19 bolts. Install gasket cutter in space between pan and transmission body. Using gasket cutter, carefully cut old sealer around entire surface of pan. (Scheme 181)
- Remove oil filter and gaskets. (Scheme 182)or (Scheme 183).
- Clean transmission oil pan using magnets located in oil pan and use them to collect any steel chips. Look carefully at chips and particles in pan and on magnet to anticipate the type of wear you will find in transmission. Steel is magnetic and typically results from bearing, gear and clutch plate wear. Brass is non-magnetic and typically results from bushing wear. Remove and clean magnets in pan of all metal particles.
- Install oil filter and gaskets.
- Install oil pan using the following steps: Install magnets in oil pan. Remove any packing material and take care to not drop any oil on contacting surfaces of transmission case and oil pan. Apply appropriate sealant to oil pan. (Scheme 184) Install transmission oil pan. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156788-S40979474472003072900000).
- Install drain plug and tighten to specification.
- With engine off, add NEW fluid through oil filler tube.
- Start engine and move gearshift lever through all positions. Place gearshift lever back into Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid to bring level up to COOL mark on dipstick.
- Recheck fluid level when engine and transmission reaches operating temperature of 158-176°F (70-80°C). Add fluid up to HOT mark on dipstick. See «FLUID CAPACITIES»(ref-156788-S38062880312003072900000).

- If transmission oil filter is to be changed, remove oil pan using the following steps: Remove 20 bolts. (Scheme 185) Remove oil pan gasket.
- Clean transmission oil pan using magnets located in oil pan and use them to collect any steel chips. Look carefully at chips and particles in pan and on magnet to anticipate the type of wear you will find in transmission. Steel is magnetic and typically results from bearing, gear and clutch plate wear. Brass is non-magnetic and typically results from bushing wear. - Remove 4 bolts, oil filter and "O" ring. (Scheme 186)
- Install oil filter and new "O" ring.
- Install transmission oil pan using the following steps: Install 3 magnets in oil pan. Remove any packing material and take care to not drop any oil on contacting surfaces of transmission case and oil pan. Install new gasket and oil pan. Install 20 bolts and tighten bolts to specification. (Scheme 185)
- Install drain plug with new gasket. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156788-S40979474472003072900000).
- With engine off, add new fluid through oil filler tube.
- Start engine and move gearshift lever through all positions. Place gearshift lever back into Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid to bring level up to COOL mark on dipstick.

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Note. Various components may be serviced without transmission removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
- Check that engine can only be started with shift lever in the "N" or "P" positions, not in any other position. If engine can be started in any position other than "N" or "P", adjust Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. Go to next step.
- Adjust PNP switch using the following steps: Loosen bolt of PNP switch and set shift lever to "N" position. Align the groove and neutral basic line. (Scheme 187) Hold switch in position and tighten bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (13 N.m). After adjustment, perform inspection as described in step 1.

SHIFT LEVER
- Inspect shift lever position using the following steps: When shifting from "P" to "R" position only with ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed, make sure that gearshift lever moves smoothly and can be moderately operated. When starting engine, make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from "N" to "D" position and moves rearward when shifting to "R" position.
- If adjustment is required, proceed to adjust shift lever position using the following steps: Loosen nut on shift lever. Push shift lever fully downward. Return shift lever 2 notches to "N" position. (Scheme 188) Set gearshift lever to "N" position. While holding gearshift lever lightly toward the "R" position side, tighten the lever nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156788-S40979474472003072900000).
- Start engine and ensure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and moves rearward when shifting it to "R" position.
