REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.

Note. For removal and installation procedures not covered in this article, see MANUAL A/C-HEATER SYSTEMS - 4RUNNER article.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove parking brake hole cover. Remove upper console (shift lever base cover) panel. Remove instrument panel center finish panel. Remove bolts securing A/C control assembly to instrument panel. Disconnect A/C control assembly connectors and remove. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove under cover and glove box. Remove glove compartment door reinforcement. Remove floor ducting. Unplug servomotor connector. Remove servomotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove HEATER ASSEMBLY . Remove servomotor from heater assembly. Disconnect control cable. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove driver's side lower finish panel. Disconnect air outlet servomotor connector, located on heater assembly left side. Remove 3 screws securing servomotor and remove from heater assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Using a screwdriver with the tip covered with tape, pry ambient temperature sensor from front bumper reinforcement. Disconnect harness connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect suction and liquid lines and grommets from evaporator. Plug openings.
  2. Disconnect electrical leads from evaporator. Remove glove box and lower trim panel. Remove engine control module. Remove ducts as necessary. Remove evaporator assembly.

Reassembly & Installation

To reassemble and install evaporator assembly, reverse disassembly and removal procedures. If installing a new evaporator core, add 1.4-1.7 ounces of refrigerant oil to core before installing. Evacuate, recharge and leak test system.

  1. Remove evaporator assembly. See «EVAPORATOR ASSEMBLY»(ref-374-S16432681172000030800000) . Drain cooling system. Disconnect hoses from heater core. Remove grommets from hoses. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-374-S23784701612000030800000) .
  2. Disconnect water valve control cable. Remove defroster nozzle and heater duct. Remove heater assembly. Remove air mix and air outlet servomotors from heater assembly. Remove screws, clamps and heater core. To install, reverse removal procedure. Adjust water valve control cable. See «WATER VALVE CONTROL CABLE»(ref-374-S13089391272000030800000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel and steering column cover. Remove hood lock release lever. Remove right and left side lower panels, lower center cover. Remove heater ducts and starter switch bezel.
  2. Remove cluster finish panel and combination meter. Remove parking brake hole cover and upper console panel. Remove center cluster finish panel. Remove rear console box.
  3. Remove console panel side panels. Remove glove box door and lower finish panel. Remove glove box door reinforcement and A/C control assembly. Unplug any connectors necessary for instrument panel removal.
  4. Remove bolts at instrument cluster and glove box openings. Disengage instrument panel from clips along top edge of panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove screws securing hood latch from under cover. Remove under cover. Disconnect aspirator hose and harness connector from sensor and remove sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Using a screwdriver with the tip covered with tape, pry solar sensor from instrument panel. Disconnect harness connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.
