Starter 3.0L: Other Subaru Outback BH

PRECAUTIONS

  1. Wear working clothing, including a cap, protective goggles, and protective shoes during operation.
  2. Remove contamination including dirt and corrosion before removal, installation or disassembly.
  3. Keep the disassembled parts in order and protect them from dust or dirt.
  4. Before removal, installation or disassembly, be sure to clarify the failure. Avoid unnecessary removal, installation, disassembly, and replacement.
  5. Be careful not to burn your hands, because each part in the vehicle is hot after running.
  6. Be sure to tighten fasteners including bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
  7. Place shop jacks or safety stands at the specified points.
  8. Before disconnecting electrical connectors of sensors or units, be sure to disconnect negative battery terminal.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. (Scheme 33): Disconnecting Battery Ground Cable
  2. Remove air intake chamber. See «REMOVAL»(ref-178475-S24827067472005061500000), Air Intake Chamber.
  3. Disconnect connector and terminal from starter. (Scheme 34): Disconnecting Connector & Terminal From Starter

OVERRUNNING CLUTCH

Inspect teeth of pinion for wear and damage. Replace if it is damaged. Rotate pinion in direction of rotation (clockwise). It should rotate smoothly. But in opposite direction, it should be locked.

CAUTIONDo not clean overrunning clutch with oil to prevent grease from flowing out.

  1. Brush length Measure the brush length and replace if it exceeds the service limit. Replace if abnormal wear or cracks are noticed. Brush length: Standard: 17.0 mm (0.669 in) Service limit: 11.5 mm (0.453 in) (Scheme 38): Measuring Brush Length
  2. Brush movement Be sure brush moves smoothly inside brush holder.
  3. Insulation resistance of brush holder Be sure there is no continuity between brush holder and its plate. (Scheme 39): Making Sure No Continuity Is Between Brush Holder & Its Plate

MAGNETIC SWITCH

CAUTIONThe following magnetic switch tests should be performed with specified voltage applied. Each test should be conducted within 3 to 5 seconds. Power to be furnished should be one-half the rated voltage.
