Diagnostic Starting Point - Mirrors

Begin the system diagnosis with the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle . The Diagnostic System Check will provide the following information

  1. The identification of the control modules which command the system.
  2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit.
  3. The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status.

The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Symptoms - Mirrors

IMPORTANTThe following steps must be completed before using the symptom tables.
  1. Perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(ref-302315-S22962940552008102100000) before using the Symptom Diagnostics in order to verify that all of the following are true: There are no DTCs set. The control modules can communicate via the serial data link.
  2. Review the system operation in order to familiarize yourself with the system functions. Refer to the following system descriptions: «Outside Mirror Description and Operation»(ref-302321-S13889167052008102100000) «Automatic Day-Night Mirror Description and Operation»(ref-302321-S16038900512008102100000)

Visual/Physical Inspection

  1. Inspect for aftermarket devices which could affect the operation of the system. Refer to «Checking Aftermarket Accessories»(ref-302317-S19452665262008102100000) .
  2. Inspect the easily accessible or visible system components for obvious damage or conditions which could cause the symptom.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the outside rearview mirror.
  2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 9. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the heater element control circuit terminal 8 and ground.
  4. Ignition ON, operate the rear window defogger ON and OFF with the rear defogger switch. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, refer to «Rear Window Defogger Malfunction»(ref-302293-S01043768272008102100000) . If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, refer to «Rear Window Defogger Malfunction»(ref-302293-S01043768272008102100000) .
  5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the outside rearview mirror face.

1. Inside Electrochromic Mirror Inoperative
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inside rearview mirror.
  2. Verify that a test lamp illuminates between B+ and the ground circuit terminal 8. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.
  3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the ignition circuit terminal 13 and ground. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the ignition circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  4. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the inside rearview mirror.

1. Power mirror malfunction
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate outside rearview mirror.
  2. Mirror select switch in the appropriate mirror position, test for infinite resistance between the control circuit terminal 3 and ground. If less than the specified range, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the front side door window switch.
  3. Test for infinite resistance between the control circuit terminals 1 and 2 and ground. If less than the specified range, test the appropriate control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuits test normal, replace the front side door window switch.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 1 and the control circuit terminal 3.
  5. Operate the vertical switch UP and DOWN. The test lamp should turn ON when commanding the UP and DOWN states. If the test lamp remains OFF during either of the commands, test for an open/high resistance on the control circuits. If the circuits test normal, replace the front side door window switch.
  6. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 2 and the control circuit terminal 3.
  7. Operate the vertical switch LEFT and RIGHT. The test lamp should turn ON when commanding the LEFT and RIGHT states. If the test lamp remains OFF during either of the commands, test for an open/high resistance on the control circuits. If the circuits test normal, replace the front side door window switch.
  8. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the outside rearview mirror.
