- Unplug the transmission control module connector.
- While driving the car, check that the transmission shifts to the relevant gear in accordance with the position of the selector lever.
- Check that the car does not move in the N position.
- Check that the P interlock locks in the position P.

Fault symptoms
Selector lever locked in position P although the ignition is switched on and the brake pedal depressed.
Diagnostic help
First, check that the mechanical interlock functions (key-lock and shift-lock) are working.
Diagnostic procedure
1 Check the operation of the brake lights .
- Check whether the brake lights are in working order.
Is the function OK?
yes
Continue with step 2 .
no
Repair or replace the relevant fuse, wiring or brake lights switch. Continue with point 3, final check .
2 Check that the microswitch and solenoid are supplied with current and properly grounded .

- Unplug connector H6-4.
- Connect a test lamp to pin 5 of female connector H6-4 and a good grounding point.
- Depress the brake pedal.
The lamp should light up.
- Connect a test lamp to battery positive (B+) and pin 6 of female connector H6-4.
The lamp should light up.
Is the function OK?
yes
Change the solenoid and microswitch. Continue with point 3, final check .
no
Repair or replace the appropriate lead. Continue with point 3, final check .
3 Final check
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes. Perform a check of functionality.
Is the function OK?
yes
The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct .

Change the control module .

The desired gear position (PRND321) is selected by means of the selector lever. Movement of the selector lever is transferred by means of a mechanical cable to the selector lever position sensor mounted on the transmission.
The selector lever position sensor is connected to the manual shifting valve in the valve housing, which is also actuated by the selector lever.
The following shift-lock functions are provided in the selector lever housing
Shift-lock
Shift-lock means that the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition key turned to the ON position in order to be able to move the gear selector lever from the P-position.
Anti-theft/Starter motor interlock function
The ignition key must be in the ignition and turned to the OFF position in order for the selector lever to be moved from the P-position.
Shift-lock function
The release button on the selector lever must be pressed in to be able to move the lever between the different gears (PRND321).
Shift-lock function
The function means that the brake pedal must be depressed and the ignition key turned to the OFF position in order to be able to move the selector lever from the P-position. The function consists of a microswitch and a solenoid.
The microswitch is actuated by a cam on the selector lever and is closed only when the selector lever is in position P.
The solenoid blocks the selector lever's segment mechanically if it is not activated.
With the brake pedal depressed (brake light switch closed), the solenoid is supplied with power via the microswitch (selector lever in position P). The solenoid is activated and the lock for the selector lever segment is released. The solenoid is grounded at grounding point G42 and the selector lever can be moved from the P-position.

To disable the SHIFT-LOCK function in the event of power loss, proceed as follows
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Depress the oblong button at the side of the selector lever to release the SHIFT-LOCK function.
Anti-theft/Starter motor interlock function
When this function is operative, the ignition key must be inserted in the ignition switch and turned at least to the OFF position before it will be possible to move the selector lever out of position P.
The interlock function consists of the ignition switch, a locking pin and a mechanical cable connecting these components.
When the selector lever is in position P and the ignition switch is in the OFF position, the cable pulls the locking pin into a tooth space to lock the selector lever in position P.
Selector lever position catch
A catch on the selector lever must be activated before it will be possible to move the lever between the different positions (PRND321).
This function consists of a catch, a locking pin and a rod which connects these components. The locking pin blocks the lever in the different positions and when the catch is activated the selector lever is released from the locking segment and can then be moved to the desired position.

The gear selector position sensor is mounted on the transmission casing. It contains the reversing light switch, starting interlock switch and switches which tell the control module which gear is engaged.
The gear selector position sensor is a position switch that is powered via +15. A number of slip contacts power the sensor outputs. The combination of terminals A, B, C and PA indicate the current selector lever position (see table). The slip contacts can be either closed (ON) or open (OFF).

TOOLS COMPATIBILITY-GEAR SELECTOR POSITION SENSOR TERMINALS
To ensure that the control module receives accurate information, it is important for the sensor to be correctly adjusted. Special tool 87 92 467 should be used for adjusting the sensor.
Diagnostics
In the event of a fault in the selector lever position inputs, diagnostic trouble code P0705 will be generated and the transmission will go into Limp-Home mode.

On cars with automatic transmission, the reversing light switch (31) is integrated with the selector lever position sensor.
The switch function (31) pins E and D are used to control the reversing lights.
With the selector lever in position R the switch is closed, in all other selector lever positions the switch is open.
The switch supplies power to all reversing lights.

On cars with automatic transmission, the starting interlock switch (77) is integrated with the selector lever position sensor.
The switch function (77) pins ST and M are used for control of the start relay.
Switch pin ST is supplied with power via fuse 30 with +50 voltage.
In positions P and N, switch 77 is closed and +50 is supplied via the start relay to TWICE which grounds the input if the criteria for this are fulfilled (correct key).
In all other gear positions, the switch (77) is open, and the start relay receives no power.
